I do remember this show as a kid. I also remember it being one I could not play along with. I didn't know the kind of music they played on that show for the most part.
I use to watch this game show since I was in the early 20's, keep it up you guys and thanks for the most wonderful game show moments. R.I.P. Jim Lange.

The old Name that Tune is infinitely better than the Name that Tune that’s on now (April 19, 2022). People could name tunes with ONE NOTE back then! Sorry Jim Lange passed away. He was such a great host. We used to watch this show as a family and we’d all try to guess. It was fun to be with mom and dad and playing along. That’s when people did things together.
Thank you for sharing your comments helped me i was desperately searching for the original version of name that tune i literally had no idea that they had a new one ? My Grandmother's Birthday is coming up and i wanted to surprise her and now hopefully she is going to be surprised and happy 😊
Way back in 1986. I watched Jim Lange 4 times a day. He was currently hosting The $1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime, and reruns of his previous game shows, Name That Time on CBN, Bullseye on USA and the late 78-80 version of The Dating Game.
In case some of you are wondering how Shirley did in the tournament, she lost in the elimination round. I can't remember who her opponents were. It's been too long since I have seen that episode.
I have no idea this is the 1st time ive ever seen this before i was looking for it to surprise my grandmother for her birthday and now it's peeked my interest lol Is way cool ❤ how talented they are able to name the tunes some in only a few notes wow 😊
Did anyone else find it unusual that two outstanding contestants didn't know Unchained Melody immediately? I only got two songs correct the whole show, but I knew that one just from the clue that was provided.
I've always wondered how much the royalties would cost. They do 17-27 songs per episode, and very few are open source. It's been claimed that Sherwood Schwartz made $40,000 per year on the royalties to the theme songs to The Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island alone.
I feel a little bad for the black guy in the beginning. "Day's play'n white folk music," "where Al Green at? "n Stevie Wonder? Aretha Franklin? Can a black man get a tune?" "Can we gets some Motown up in here!?" lol
Mike, that must've been awesome to see in person especially since Shirley won. How was Jim Lange off camera? He mentioned he met Laura in the audience before she came on stage.
I have Been randomly selected to participate against a teacher for a game of name that tune at my school so I don’t know what I’m doing so I need to learn that’s why I’m here
Omg, my foster mother would have me watch this with her religiously back in the day. To a 13 yr old, it was incredibly boring because I had ZERO idea who the f**k the artists were - let alone the songs.
The 1984-1985 Service Merchandise catalog! Tune Topics still creeps me out with the D1-G-D2-C / C-minor chord. ...but hearing the song while John Harlan describes the $6,408 (1984) piano and the 1985 Pontiac Fiero makes up for it.
The music is a bit more lively in this episode - I like the very opening with all the instruments chiming in. That's when I know it is a good day - when you hear all of the instruments lol.
I wouldn't be able to name any of these tunes of course it's only the 1st 3 minutes in the video ill keep trying 😅 hey i got my 1st tune When you wish upon a star. 😊 and now i can tell the difference between the new name that tune was playing more of the songs than this version were they don't play the whole tunes and they had to really know their music in order to be able to play nevermind compete to win. This was actually better in my opinion idk a lot of these songs except for it's still fun watching this episode 😊maybe ill watch more who knows i might find some new tunes 😊 2nd its off to work we go snow white .
I know the 1984-85 revival of Name That Tune aired in the NYC area on WABC-TV Channel 7 (as did the 1978-81 updated version w/ Tom Kennedy), but which station in L.A. carried the NTT revival. Was it KTLA Channel 5, being that the show was produced at the station's Golden West Studios?
And according to old listings, WXIA here in Atlanta also had Lange NTT...but only on Saturday nights at 7:30 (couldn't they air it late nights after Letterman?)!
And I know the 1984-85 revival of Name That Tune aired in the Louisville area on WAVE-TV Channel 3 every weeknight at 7:30 immediately following NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw and WKYT in Lexington and WHAS in Louisville carried the Kennedy version of Name That Tune.
Mom used to watch this when I was kid. Brings back amazing memories
RIP Mr. Jim Lange! An awesome game show host indeed & loved Name That Tune even now!

I also enjoyed “The $1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime”, which Jim Lange also hosted.
The Dating Game was my favorite Jim Lange Game Show
I used to love Name That Tune as a child.
me three!
I had carrots for breakfast ....
same
Sheri451 so did I. This version n Tom Kennedys version
I did too bc I would always get the tunes lol now, it’s totally different unless they stick to the 60’s & 70’s
Rip Jim Lange 1932-2014 Jim Lange died of a heart attack on Tuesday he was 81. I will miss Jim lange but rememer him doing Name that tune.
Eric Purkey I use to watch Jim Lange's NTT on CBN and later USA and then it came back to CBN when it became The Family Channel
Omg i used to watch this with my mom
Notice how short the commercial breaks were back then
Ty for sharing !

This was a Summer Vacation staple on USA Network.

At least the Dr got some Mazzola as a parting gift.

Dr. Wes Forbes was a member of the doo-wop group, The FIve Satins in the 1960s.
I've got several of their recordings in my library. "In the Still of the Night" is the big one, of course.
Love this show too
UA-cam: "Jim, I can name the copyright holder of all those tunes in 0.5 seconds!"
One of my alltime favorites from childhood.
Firat time to fully understand whats this game all about! I was just a little kid when my family watchEd this in the 80s! There must be a reboot!
my fave show when i was in grade school - from PH
I got The Unchained Melody from the clue as soon as he said 1955 and on the charts 4 times.
Me too!
“Unchained Melody” has been a hit a few times including Al Hibbler, Roy Hamilton, and the Righteous Brothers.
That clue was too much information - too easy
Tom Kennedy (1974-81) RIP...great show...Jim does a great job as well.
Jim's version (1984-1985) was taped from the same studio for "Face the Music" (1980-1981).
They don’t make game shows like this anymore
Well, Beat Shazam is basically this game, but without an orchestra. I wouldn't say it's as good, though.
@@Rognik nothing beats the original. I grew up on this show in the summers watching old reruns.
@DancyLancy 😝 The new version is garbage and the host looks like a midlife crisis !

Seems more like 1974 to me than 1984.
Samuel I , that’s what I thought too. 😂
I say 1979 or 1980 than 1984 too bad I wasn't around to watch the show at the time
This version was 1984-85. The picture displayed on Wikipedia's page should match the 1984
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_That_Tune
70s residue didn't wear off until late 1986-1987
No its the early 80s. Thats what it looked like to me.
awesome childhood memories!!
This version is much, much better than the 2021. The host is better and no insignificant comments from the band.
Wow Shirley was fantastic 😊 definitely played very well 👏
nice upload keepem coming thanks
Back when they handed you actual cash so you could have a chance to hold it for a moment before the IRS takes half of it.
LMAO
Held for a moment before a staffer takes it away.
The IRS doesn’t take half… if depends on how much. If you win say $500 the IRS probably won’t touch it
Is this Miss Shirley who later ran the museum school
I have no idea this is the 1st time ive ever seen this before i was looking for it to surprise my grandmother for her birthday and now it's peeked my interest lol Is way cool ❤ how talented they are able to name the tunes some in only a few notes wow 😊
I love this show! I could have won it.
Fun show. Wish they revived this game
Service Merchandise... I haven't thought about them in forever
They're long gone.
"Jim, I can name that tune in two notes." "Mark, name that tune."
That Sloop John B should have been easy.
He should have had a guess, Unchained Melody was their most famous song.
Did anyone else find it unusual that two outstanding contestants didn't know Unchained Melody immediately? I only got two songs correct the whole show, but I knew that one just from the clue that was provided.
OMG that TV he won was OLD!!!!
Would have been pissed having to lug that heavy piece of shit home.

I wish this show was around I know a lot of music I know I can win.
Are you watching the new show this year? (2021)
That bumper music leading into the Golden Medley should be a ring tone...
Now known as Down and Dirty.
Wow..."$1,500.00 in 1979 had the same buying power as $2,244.46 in 1984.Annual inflation over this period was about 8.39%"
Ooooo....a color television....wow!!!😆
I loved this show!!
Aired on USA between 11/6/1989-9/7/1990. as Chain Reaction followed Name that Tune during that time frame on USA
I....FUCKING.....MISS.....THE 80's!!!!!!
Shirley's On Fire!
Jim Lange's body expressions are priceless!
I wish BUZZR would pick this up. I'd watch it a lot more if they did.
I agree! It's such a fun show!
Good luck with that. Sandy Frank wants a ton of money, and so does the RIAA.
Junior BUZZR is my favorite channel! I’m so happy I have a TV that has it. 😍 Match Game is my favorite.

@Robert Leonard I like Shazam. That was the best movie of the 1990s. Sinbad was great! :-)
Thanks for the upload

So this was the inspiration to Programa Silvio Santos.

During the Bid-A-Note segment what why were those walls placed in front of Melody Roulette Wheel and the Tune Topics selector?
What a big change! Tourney winners still got $10K in cash, but instead of this amount for next 9 years, they got $90K in prizes.
And I don’t think there was a balloon 🎈 or confetti 🎊 drop on the original either like there was on this version
Omg all those prizes
Omg, my foster mother would have me watch this with her religiously back in the day. To a 13 yr old, it was incredibly boring because I had ZERO idea who the f**k the artists were - let alone the songs.
