For the price of getting a K to your front door, you can have a running B swap. For the price of a running K swap, you can have a turbo B swap
Yes, B-series engines are prone to leaks. You have to change valve cover gaskets, cam plugs, and oil pan gaskets; or you can rebuild and start fresh. They also run a timing belt, so you have the added maintenance of a timing belt and water pump every 100,000 miles. Plus cam seals and a crank seal. Lots of places to leak oil. If your car came with a B-series, it's still completely viable in 2022. People aren't B-swapping, but lots of people are keeping up their B-series engines. If you want to swap, save up for the K-swap. But if you have a B, it can run just fine.
I'm currently looking at B swapping a 2000 corolla. Is the b a mistake in 2023 for making good boosted power? I'm looking for a cheap sleeper
"B series is direct bolt in"
Hence why I want to do this one.
You make really good points but I don't think that the B series will ever become "outdated". Those old guys we see you at the track with their muscle cars from the 70s... Why don't they just put in a new LS1 from a Corvette or an SRT8 from a new gen charger or cram that Shelby GT500 engine in them? There will always be better technology out there. In 20 to 30 years WE will be those old farts that are wrenching on our old outdated Civics. "yes, I know it's 2039 and Honda has its new reactor core, uranium powered four-cylinder... but I still want to go K..."
Jimmy Slapp because those old guys with muscle cars have 3 times the displacment then a outdated b series and make 5 times the hp in every form(NA to NA, FI to FI) then your engine ever could.
I personally know a guy that goes to import faceoff with a 700 HP d16 and the world record b series has something like 1400hp.
I'll stick to the B-series. Power and cost figures are a means of measuring the value of an engine but I go on the driving experience. Very few engines sound as good as a Vtec B series reaching the last couple hundred RPM before redline. My B16A2 sings at 8,000+rpm!
Awesome!!! I have a 95 Del Sol. It's my Hobby Car... I realized i am hooked on working on cars. Now I want to go Faster!! B Series it is!!
You dont have to be the fastest, its about having fun working on and driving your car
Mike Kollin Conscious Power God willing I’m picking up a civic hatch EK soon, and I’m gunna hopefully go B series.
Thank you, that shed some light on knowledge i needed. I was wondering what to put in my civic, and everyone where im at has been telling me go k series. Thank you.
Dont sleep on the b series. Its transmission is arguably better than a k series engine...
@@legendztofar-- ill probably get both of them just to see. B series has been out for a while so id expect it to have a good aftermarket base for performance parts. Ill just see how time plays out. Thank you
@@EXecuteOBsessions I had decided to rebuild a GSR engine with type R internals making a B18C gsr/type r hybrid, extremely reliable and quite powerfull with the boltons.
Seems each vid lately is even more on point then the previous.
Good job n Happy NewYear!
Gotta have fun with what we got 👌
My b16a has 213 thousand miles never been rebuild and mine don't leak..
Informative and to the point. Thank you!
Super honest breakdown bro. I'm new to the Honda world with a 2001 rsx, I'm planning on making it my project, but I just learn of some crazy combination between k20 and k24. If you can guid me on how this combination works I'll really appreciate it.
well said my brother Middleton films your correct 100%
Everything now is kkkkk lmao just sounded funny
hahahah i was thinking the same thing like year bro you gotta add many more K's in there so you don't sound funny
I counted them as he said it tho lol
K is engine kk is OK kkk is Ku Klux Klan kkkk is I dunno somone nees to make this a meem
I just wanna close a stock EF hood with a k20 underneath anylinks im swapping this winter if i get a good shop referal east coast ny to ma or good install guide with full parts breakdown. whos got links? thx in advance
Very well stated! You’re the first I’ve heard that comes out with the facts! Hope you got your K series since this video! 👍👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘🤘
What a good video short and simple
I don't know how true this is, but I hear k series transmissions don't hold up as well to abuse as b series. Now if that is true, then I believe it's something worth mentioning and is often left out of the conversation.
it’s more user error then anything when it comes to a k series transmission.
The RSX-S K20A2 6 Speed is the one you're thinking about. Heard nothing but bad things about that one.
Great video man
B-series they are legends..I’m still enjoying using B16B type r on my eg4..wow...it make u addicted....
I rebuilt the engine on my b20z so u sir are correct. That's the reason why I did it
I'm sticking with B series and non-vtec at that. I'm planning on building my DB7 this year because I spent the past two years building my VIP 2013 Honda Accord Sport. B18B1 Turbo with forged internals, that's the dream, just because fun daily.
Nice video man. Well said
Got a rsx type s with the k of course, cai and exhaust no tune and satisfies me every time I'm behind the wheel
Interesting, while trying to design a motor with the magical 1.75 Rod stroke ratio my platform was leaning towards a Destroked b20 with a b16 or b17 crank. The hopes was to put it in a sub ton car and 10k rpm. What we lose in torque x (we made up in)rpm/5252=more ponies. So that's why we were looking for an 84mm bore
Love B. Mainly bc of how cheap it is and availability. Wish I could afford a K.
I bought a K20z1 to swap into my SI but decided to do a B18C instead, then decided to fully build the the B18, 12:5:1 comp, skunk2 pro2's, extensive porting, e85 etc etc, don't even care that it's not going to make as much as the K20 would of, sometimes you just have to keep it oldschool, and anyway i've noticed J series becoming more and more common, that'll be my next route
+[GR]Piney[CPT J32 is a beast in stock form! but many people just follow the bandwagon and go K series.....but K series bas more aftermarket parts so either one is fine 😎
this guy......
super knowledgeable.
Liked your video. Thanks for the info
Just did a K swap into a Del Sol (2019):
$4,500 for a JDM K20A (DC5 Type-R) with Y2M3 transmission
$2,000 for all the needed swap parts and miscellaneous stuff that comes up
$2,000 in labor for install and light fab work
So to pay someone else to do it, about $8,500 for a FULL swap, that's AC and everything. You could of course get these prices down quite a bit by going with a K20A2 (or similar), non LSD transaxle, opting to not do power steering and AC, and doing the install yourself. If I had to guess, bare bones, you're probably talking about $2,500 for a three lobe VTEC motor (that's the performance a 200+ HP variety) with open diff trans, probably $1,400 for swap parts (seeing as you're deleting AC and power steering), and probably $1,600 labor (or no labor if you do it yourself). So between $3,900 to $5,500 for a budget build, depending on whether you do the install.
Honestly, I don't know what obsolete means though when talking about the B engines, it's not like they are bad performance for displacement/fuel consumption, or don't run on modern fuel or something weird. The B engine is a fantastic engine, it will never cease being a fantastic engine. You're talking a 100HP per liter with easily 35+ MPG and bullet proof reliability. Also, the B series transmissions are the VERY BEST transmissions Honda EVER made, PERIOD. Yes they have belt driven cams, and they use a distributor. However, you can move to coil on plug setup if you want, and belt drive certainly has it's pros, even compared to the K's chain drive. So honestly, other than wanting more displacement, I don't see anything "obsolete" about the engine. It's still one of the very highest HP per cube engines ever made, and one of the most reliable. Not sure about the whole "leaking thing" though. I have seen a number of B motors with over 200k miles that didn't leak a drop and were never rebuilt. The transmission on the other hand, I have seen those leak from time to time, but it's never been so bad that it became a concern, like you were going to run out of transmission fluid or something.
@@goldentrucker7921 Ryan Lott of Rust City Imports. Though I think he may have retired. It took him like two days to do the swap.
@@bujin5455 nothing on Google. Technically I can do it. But 0 time. I'm in the northeast Pennsylvania area, near jersey. Looking for a shop to do it.
I've made 220+ on a f20b $699 paired with a used setup 400 dollar cams. 4+ years of hitting vtec and seeing 8000-9000 daily.
leaning towards a f20b myself, 88mm piston 4p headwork custom upper manifold with ford twin butterfly throttle body, dunno about boost as of yet, since I do miss having an na buzzbomb
how about if you are going turbo? I thought the b block was stronger than the k, especially in when you get to the 600+HP range?
Man I feel old when I was doing these swaps I don't even know if you were alive yet
What will 5k get for both b and k series with no machine work , b series it's gonna get you maybe 225hp (maybe) ,k series I'm gonna say every bit of 280-300hp with the right parts
b series are getting more and more rare my friend was searching for an engine about 6 months !
i would go for a big turbo d series or a k20.
Someone had mentioned the J swap already, but I have many benchmark times on several tracks that can prove the potential of the swap since I currently run a J32 Civic in Global Time Attack. It's an underestimated swap and it holds its own for the overall cost of the car. J32a2's run for $500 and will easily put down over 250hp at the wheels. This also makes them disposable should the motor die rather than rebuilding. Currently a street FWD car and will be at Road Atlanta and Buttonwillow 2017 for GTA. Good luck with your build! Hope to see you on track sometime. ;)
Woah! Just went crazy when I saw the name!! J-series is a great engine without a doubt! One day I will attempt to beat your time but i still have a LONG way to go...Thanks for the advice and commenting Cooper!
I heard that Special Ed I Got It Made instrumental in the background 👌🏼
Im glad to see some cementers have nostalgia for the B series. Ive had several and my latest project is a 95 civic with brand new from the dealer b18c5 engine & trans. For the amount of money im spending I could have easily gone K but it just seems wrong somehow. I know to a lot of people who only look at hp, my choice doesnt make sense. But I felt that I wanted to keep the car true to its originality (similar to some muscle car guys who would never put an ls1 in a classic camaro). Just wanted to offer my perspective on b vs K. Both are great motors. Maybe ill buy an rsx one day and experience the k.
Buy an eighth gen si. Ps. Look up Gene Kim n Chuck missler on UA-cam on UA-cam
Drove a CR-V as a loaner, K series wasn’t that much different, but it was an automatic transmission too.
Love my H22, But when it goes I will be switching to K. But only because in 5-10 years down the road it will just be more difficult to find shops/parts/motors etc.. that have more to offer w the B than the K or H for that matter.
So, what if I wanted to put a turbo B-Series engine in my Nissan 720?
how much would a B series swap into a 1989 civic sedan cost? more or less? for the time being its got a D12B1 engine and i'm looking to put something with a bit more power on a budget
said a whole bunch of nothing
Jordan Morales honestly who the fuck goes na period. Only the track guys from what I see now a days.
Jordan Nicot pretty much track guys street or drag guys are looking to put down the most power on the track you don’t need a lot of power it’s more about driver
@@jordannicot6402 you sound like a 12 year old 2jz fanboy. Somestimes you don't want turbo lag.
Jordan Nicot actually a lot of people like to run NA instead of running boost
i swapped my EG to B18c type R, not K20R although i have the money for a K. simply because B is the natural engine to go to
coming back to this video in 2024 it’s funny to see that b swaps cost more than k. b series are still less power and less reliable but they are sought after as a nostalgic engine
My B18A1 in my DA is still running strong, leak and all :)
Its 2020 and I'm going the cheapest route, what would a b series cost with ecu and wiring harness.
just want to ask, is all k20a type r has red cover? because i have a seller showing a grey cover but claiming is a type r
7 years later and b18c still hot on the market.
I got a 2008 civic si 2.0 coupe what els can I put in it like just drop in not much to it
My b18b was 18 years old still ran perfectly one morning I went to warm it up came outside and the car was off motor blown so I had it rebuilt and then it started leaking it was a mess
Turn key K swap kit is around 4k, add the motor and trans your looking at 5.5k to K swap the car yourself with all new parts like swap radiator, rad hoses, mounts, intake etc. My next door neighbor has a K swapped 1995 Civic Ex I think, whatever one is the sedan, and says he got it done for around 3.5K including labor by a shop in Vegas. Not to mention VTEC academy did their budget K swap with a complete parts list on their website for like 3.6K. So it's definitely not as expensive as 10k even if you splurged and got a complete Type-S K24 or went Type-S K20 Head and K24 Block or full Type-S K20.
I’m gonna be that guy, my teg with a b18b1 has just hit 200k kms. One small leak came from the cam cover seals other than that there hasn’t been a single leak and 0 rebuilds. People gotta treat their stuff better!
Newbie question. How much hp does your car have and what is the fuel economy like when you drive like a normie?
the only b series that can be compared with k series acceleration is the one b18cr gearbox.....it's amazing
I own a B18C ITR engine in my GSR. Should I K swap it if breaks down or rebuild the ITR B18C If breaks down ?? Any thoughts
You can turbo a bseries and beat a k for a series for the money
h Crider if your turbo b series is stock I can guarantee you my al motor k series will shit all over a turbo b series.
Google the fastest stock Chassis SFWD. It's a Civic, Running a B Series not a K series so I'm not quite sure where you're pulling the "Turbo a K and youll shit on a Turbo B"
Tyler OS stock motor for stock motor the two don't compare. A stock k series with a turbo kit will make 600 hp all day. You will never see a stock b series making that kind of power.
look at the cfm numbers on a ported k20 head vs any ported h or b series head, not to mention r/s ratio, so on the fence between an f20b and a k20/24
can you do a video for everyone who doesn't know the difference between all the different types of Honda engine, thanks!!
Which would be better in a 83 ford Ranger?
I own B18C1 for 26 years, so far no issue at all. Only burn oil little bit
Would a b20 be a good swap for a 2 door accord .?
Good video fam
I'm firm believer on the b series, but it's pretty obvious that the k's are far superior stock and especially modified. Lol, k motors are in an affordable range.. the pricey part is the trans and all the aftermarket stuff you need to actually put it in 😭
After 4 years its even more + to go for the k series. In eu they allmost cost the same.
But B series is like og, classic.
Good observation
Is the K swap affect some handling in the older Honda? (Ex : i see people have some problem with handling on EK with K engine)
whats wrong with ur b series mines fine. (scoots 3 valve cover gasket boxes behind a shelf)
Hey i think the b series will stay a popular swap because older v8s and big blocks are still being swapped
Mite do a k some day on the fence if it's really worth the money at this time. Waiting to see more k parts at the local pick and pull.
h2b is a great bang for buck swap
I need something to swap my f23a4 with. This engine is ok but I want more
I know a guy that has a b18c5 that produces 850hp.
He has his teggy boosted by gear, so the engines can make the power so they're far from 'obsolete'
B’s will always hold a place in every Honda owners heart!
If you ever do want to upgrade to a k series you should check out Hansport "Speed Academy" did a whole series on their facility.
I've ridden in several K swapped Integra's. A true RHD SIR-G with a k24/k20 hybrid with ITB's and a USDM ITR with a k20a swap. RIGHT AFTER I rode in the k20a swapped ITR I rode in another USDM ITR with a stock JDM ITR swap. I was literally having just as much fun in the ITR with the b18c.. I ended up swapping my 97 LS Integra for a 98 Spec JDM ITR b18c and I don't regret it one bit.. Yes it was expensive.. However I'm keeping the engine stock other than my bolt ons and my Hondata S300 V3 ECU to keep the reliability factored in. I personally prefer the OG B series honestly. I feel like if your concern is winning races and that's why you're building your car then yes go K for an N/A platform.. However if you don't give a shit.. As in you're not in it to prove yourself to everyone on the streets/dickwave everwhere and you literally just want to enjoy your car for YOU. Don't rule out a solid B series! They are a lot more fun than a lot of people give them credit for. You could grab a 96 Spec ITR for quite a bit less than the 98 especially if you just get the engine and you already have a b16 trans or something laying around. Don't just go with something because everyone is telling you to do it. I had my stock b18b1 for a period of 4+ years and everyone was telling me to go with a K swap but I'm very happy with my ITR swap! It's been running for around 1 1/2 years now and I love it. Plus B series look much better in an engine bay IMO ;) Cheers everyone!
Ross Tregemba Love the b series myself and i agree 100% k for serious racing but b18c is a solid platform for stock reliability while still putting out good POWAAA!😎
I just noticed some notice something the picture is showing us is not a B Motor it's an H block
at around 3,40 appears a list with tech data, can anybody tell me what it is?i mean program, site how can find it??
It’s been 5 years I’m not into Hondas like that only some for looks so I have no idea what stock internals they have… but what about it guys ? Y’all stil using b series ?
Save the single cam. Im running my d16y8 in my 98 ek and im gonna build that and stay with that.
Unless you do turbo D is not my first second or even third choice. To each his own I suppose 😎
Middleton Films yea I feel it I've got a turbo for mine and 450cc injectors running an obd1 ecu tuned on crome and I'm pushing 250 horse on stock internals
EL CHAPO THE GAMING GOD i agree save the sohc i have a jdm d15b im building
EL CHAPO THE GAMING GOD F the K for real. the f22 fits my driving style, super cheap an reliable.
Soo, does the number after the B or K mean displacement? Because someone said that a K24 was only 2L....
And I want more than 2L...
Drunken Hamster k24 is 2.4 liter...b16 is 1.6 liter...etc. k24 does not rev high but is torquey. people put k20 heads on k24 blocks to rev higher. its kind of like lsvtec but the k series version sort of lol...
It all depends on the cars and what the person wants to run and the B series is going to be obsolete??????
Lol, that photo of that k series was my nephews k20 in his db7. I wrote that i4 on the intake manifold. He did that swap at age 16-17 back in 2007. Lol nice
Middleton Films no, he had that car at our buddies shop for 9 months. The swap he got for around 1k. Only had around 3k after everything was said and done. he ended up trading it for a Phoenix yellow ITR. There's one video of it on ixeckoxi channel...but it's so poor quality lol
Was the R series really that bad? :( I drive an 08 civic coupe lx r18a1 with 280k and the shit still RIPS haha
Yeah those k series make more as you go up, but not just bolt on, look at the compression ratios..
Can you run AC on a K24/20 in an EG.
For everyday driving to work it’s hot up here in the desert
If you're challenging your capability as a builder and squeezing every hp out of small displacement engine, go get a D-series or B-series. But if you want something that's not that dated and reliable out of the box, you can get a K24, upgrade the VTC gear, get a good header then remap the ECU and call it a day. And, hey it's 6-speed!
Nowadays parts for Ds and Bs are getting quite expensive and hard to find, and that's just OEM.
Times have changed since I made this video. Corona made so many things expensive
You said it. People are asking a fortune for a solid b16 and forget about finding and affording a b18C
i start with a zc in a 91 si ,h22a in a 92 dx :) and the best ,more fun K20Z1 in a dc5
a b series vtec normally fetches 1800 just for a block and head. a full swap is normally around 3500. a k series is about 600 for a block and head. I have a mechanic in town that has done way too many k swaps into civics and integras so the labor isn't to much more expensive than say a rebuild for a b series. it's really all about how cheap you can get an edu, harness, transmission, and intake/exhaust mani. the swap isn't really too much more than a b series build. but it is way more expensive than an old motor just swapped in that will probably leak or blow a head or burn valves or yadda yadda.
if you wanna go all motor K. K24 block with k20 head. if you wanna go B.. b20 block with pretty much any vtec head
Ashley p are lsvtecs cheaper to do right than just boosting an ls block and a few upgrades just to be on the safe side?
Devil Gene i mean it might be cheaper but theyre two completely different worlds. im sure boost wins over vtec. but i know exactly what your trying to figure out. boosted lsvtecs are deff popular
Josh Denoto deff.. K's are the future lol.. but B's can still hold some weight in this game
Ashley P very true gsr motors at 9000 have a special place in my heart. haha
2021 And b series are still desirable
Now being 2018. If you live in a city like LA. You can find a salvage rsx type s for cheap. $500 to $3500 depends who you are bidding with. Buy the salvage rsx take the engine out and you got your self a k20a2. i got mine from craigslist. It was wreck from the back end and owner was willing to part out the engine/transmission, and axel for $1500. If your getting your swap done by someone else it could probably cost you another $1000 on labor fees. Of you know how to take apart engine by all means buy locally and rebuild. If your just a fan buy from a reputable source like HMO. As far as b vs k. If your new go b. Willing to take it to the next level go k.
forget NA. I bought a K24a4 engine for $600 slapped on my turbo kit I made and my car made 340HP on 16lbs of boost.
MyLonewolf25 from the scrap yard. K24 from a honda element. They aren't that expensive. The only ones that are more expensive is the tsx, crv and si k24's.
If your trying to mock me or make fun of me then your just another idiot. My setup isn't in a gutted out civic. I see your a b-series fan, probably because you ain't smart enough or can afford anything better. Plus I spent half the money cause I fabricated my own turbo kit. Haters always gotta talk shit.
K is the way.....k24a4 with 76mm turbo...stock motor with injectors and race fuel 516hp 21lbs of boost...can't wait to see what the k24a2 puts down...😎
ive got a k24a2 its a torque monster, couldnt imagine using a turbo the wheel spin would be worse than it is
havent gone over the numbers fully but I think its around 3000 and I did all the work myself besides tapping the oilpan and tuning. ( the flashpro kills you $700 0.0 )
Im old school and say keep the z6 or y8 throw in vitara pistons some good rods and a turbo kit for under 4k and make 340. Plus a new engine would only be 400 bucks. Miss my all motor d series
What swap for my 89 lxi accord
With my b20b i made k20 cry dude 🔥
i prefere the h series then b series h22a vtec is 200hp stock and isnt too hard to find and is pretty cheap only downside is there isnt too much aftermarket support
B series has been around for approximately 27 Years & still going strong. I don't see it going no where anytime soon. It's still the go to motor & as the technology gets better I think the motors are going to be produced again. Some way some how or get more expensive as they will be harder to find. Who knows.....lol Me personal I love my B20v I've been rocking the same stock motors for about 5 Years now. I've never changed the water pump nor oil pump. I guess I'm just a lucky man.
Middleton Films Some people would say the right way would be to change the Rod bearing,Water pump ,Oil pump, etc.... But I was doing a budget build & I know exactly what works from what doesn't. It made 187HP on a baseman & run consistent high 13s passes. I plan on tuning it this year & run 12s hopefully.
Haha. There is a trick they do to the oil pump for it to push more oil. I have a stock b20v as well. It's at the shop changing head gasket for the third time.
5 to 10 years from now B series engines and their parts will be more desirable than ever. Far from obsolete, they are the quintessential Honda engine, they will never go out of fashion.
If we buy them now with a lot of parts to replace in 5 to 10 years, we will be all good!
That's exactly what I was gonna say!👍🏻
B18b1 (non vtec) is even worthy in my opinion.
Any of the B16A, B16B , B18C , B18C1 , will all be desirable. They will bring value to your Hondas long term. Always legendary and long lasting. Yes the k might succeed it but you might a gain of a few HP and TQ but REV no way. You cant rev the K24 or the K20 no more then 7500 RPM so its a whole different type of engine. Sure its a new Evolutionary step but the B belong to the lighter Classic EF, EG, you see they are made for one another. You start adding more Weight to the Chassis it changes how it handles alot of things. If your building a drag car sure you can go B20 Vtec or Turbo. Either way for me the B16A and the B16B are more then enough to do what I would like to do with the CRX. I want more dude I bust out my Supra for that Everything in its rightful place. I know there are others who are going to go all out Turbo built motors. But when you see a CRX with a B16 and it can do a mid 11 man just NA yeah that says something. Its respected in its own right.
Between k24, b19,b20, k20.. etc what’s fastest ... also what civic is best to get what’s the lightest money isn’t a problem to me I wanna bully everyone I’m in California 😂
