ONslow is tremendously underrated. He wrote chamber music while other composers and listeners were only intereted by the opera. He was successful through all Europe within the small groups of musicians who were interested in chamber music. Then his fame faded out. This quintet is indeed beautiful. It is more or less in the style of Mendelssohn's chamber music.
@@nickb220 You are true. He started by an opera, Les Deux Oncles". It was never represented, but the manuscript is kept safe in a library. The wrote fi further on three operas, which ere actually represented, then quickly forgotten. He nevertheless had the sense of orchestra, since his symphonies (which can be head on UA-cam) are interesting.)
Although I love chamber music, unfortunately up to know I did not know this composer, but heard a part of this nice quintet in the radio by chance and I liked it very much. Thank you for posting.
I discovered Onslow about three years ago via a circuitous route of UA-cam and Amazon recommendations. It is splendid music and dramatic like Beethoven but more chromatic.

can't agree more! That the musical history forgets his name is an unfair tragedy.
it's interesting because he got into composing in the first place from hearing an opera i think
