Since its inception, hip-hop, like punk music, has been used as a means to promote rebellion. Some of its most cherished voices made their names as outliers who boldly stood up to injustice and societal ills. From Chuck D to Mos Def, Dead Prez and Kendrick Lamar, these artists saw the systemic problems and did what they could to not only defy them, but shine a light on their roots that may have otherwise gone unseen by the masses.
However, what happens when a rapper uses hip-hop to propel dangerous sentiments?
Here, we find the Canadian born Tom MacDonald, a rapper who has simultaneously been ignored by the mainstream while picking up an immense amount of support among the more right-wing corners of white suburbia.

What label would take him at this point? How long can he thrive with songs about internet comments and Fox news vomit?
Not saying I like this dude but your calling him out for violent lyrics but you never do that for any other rappers you talk about
His last video literally does that! 🙄
Theres a diffrence between the traditional violent rap lyrics, which have been critizised forever and even by hiphopmadness, so first off extremely ignorant saying he never does that for anybody else, because i doubt you have watched all his vidoes. The whole gangster era of rap was about telling a story - it was about communicating where people were coming from - it WAS revolutionary in its way because of spoke about the reality of the black experience in America. Yes there were forms of it that glorified the lifestyle but so much of it was about survival and understanding and helping people understand what inner city black peoples experience was. The idea that something has to be expressly political and has to be spoken is absurd and it shows how much a legit dumbasss Tom Macdonald was. Even a lot of the rapping about pills and drugs is communicating something… like music is a form of art who is he to try to say what is or isn’t good music or art
Who are YOU to say what is or isn't good music or art?! You're degrading his artwork telling him he can't have an opinion on what's good or not, as you do the same exact thing.

What?
@@Schacal6666 what he said was perfectly legible -_-
Tom never said they werent telling stories or werent speaking from experience or that their experiences werent valid or anything. He just didnt like the glorification of it. If u look at todays mainstream hiphop thats all its filled with aside from a few exceptions. Theres new york drill rappers literally using lyrics in their songs such as “in the streets still promoting the violence” u cant get anymore plain than that. and our youth is listening to that music thinking its cool because its “real life” but that doesnt have to be your perception on reality. U could be fighting against it instead of glorifying it.
Suggestion to all: Listen to music without a reactor telling you how to feel about it. Then be honest with yourself about it. Decide for yourselves.
Nobody chooses cause what you choose and why has become irrelevant, and every one gets mad and calls you the bad guy for the one you didn't choose. So everybody just half ass likes everything because it's safe and under the radar.

Don't just listen to one verse and get enraged because it will make sense if you listen to the full message. The Dear Slim song is giving Eminem his flowers and saying how he inspired him, it isn't him mocking the lyrics of Stan or anything like that. Because those type of behaviours are supported and incentivized by the mainstream, they are glorified. As long as you fight for the "cause" its all good.

I can tell you though I'm most definitely not, and from the songs I've heard from Tom (his whole UA-cam catalog and his albums), interviews I've seen etc, Tom isn't either. I'm most definitely not saying people have to listen to Tom and like his music, or agree with everything he says, but to say non sense and attack his character because his music is misunderstood or he unfortunately has people that may be racist "white" people that followhim and say they are fans, whatever, that doesn't make him racist. Also, just because I like his music doesn't make me one either. , so to group everyone into a category because of a few is really stupid, to put it bluntly. Not trying to sound horrible in any way, but this is totally what is wrong with the world, people not giving other people a chance because of a few bad seeds, or because something they misunderstood, or something they are believing because someone else chopped up something to fit their own narrative (like what happened in this video). Anyway, again you don't have to like him, you don't have to like me, you don't have to like his fans, but stop furthering the division with non sense because you're told to do so, or you're totally misunderstanding a message trying to be brought forth. @@aaliG387 Joey Bada$$, Chance the Rapper, Tech N9ne, and Nipsey Hussle just to name a few. But seeing as you’re a Tom fan you probably don’t even listen to real hip hop and know who these WAY better artists are 💀
@@eddieconde you sound like a 12 year old LMAOL 🤓 what you know any thing about me nothing I use to lission to them rappers rest in peace to nipsey hussle I whent to his school give away I love Tom ❤️ songs because he speaks the truth I know because I use to meet people that work for the government so please stop taking little kid
@@aaliG387 bro you literally sound 12 tf you mean 💀 talking about “I used to meet people that worked for the government” 😂😂 im 22 years old. Learn how to spell before coming at me lil bro 🥱
This video came out the VERY SAME DAY his new song Ghost was on the Billboard top 100 in... First place AND he's the first ever independent artist to do so.
Lots of people like trash bears and rapping off beat the same topics over and over again.
Its almost as if america has more racists than anyone else, who wouldve thought a country who elects trump woukd also like this racist garbage, just because there more racists than there is non racists dont mean his music aint corny garbage.
That’s not true stop the bullshit
@@thisisisabella3634 just like 95% of rap talking about shooting glocks, drinking lean and popping pills. Like okay🤣
@@crypsin347 it definitely doesn't
Nobody listen to him because they enjoy his music, they listen to him because he caters to their political or social prejudices.
Wrong.
No, actually you are the bigot, pretending to read their minds in order to fit your weird liberal wishes. Loser.
Charted 3 top 100 songs on billboard in 2021 as an independent artist. Yea, nobody enjoys his music? Yawn. U Probably got the tekashi CD 🙄
@@beeohbee713 First of all nobody listens to 69 or buys CDs anymore, second of all most of his fans arent fans of hip hop, just fans of rappers like tom for political reasons.
@@kendrickllamma270 He’s on Apple Music, and Spotify along with other streaming services.
So any rapper that discusses politics, only has fans because of their views? Sounds pretty stupid to me. Tech WAS homophobic AF. Still listen to his music. Not voting for the man. Just relate sometimes
As a black guy(hate to have to say this) f all this moral takes. How many gangbangers, dealers and alleged killers populate this industry? Is being a closeted racist the same as being a gangbanger??
I agree with some things in your comment, but people should actually listen to the messages in his music before calling him a rac*st. Obviously, this was a "woke" hit piece, so his words were taken out of context to fit a narrative. You don't even have to like his music, but saying he's rac*st is a stretch. Whiteboy and If I Was Black has anti-racism messages and is meant to inspire conversations. I recommend listening until the end to get the full message unlike the people in the video.
@@artissubjective6279 I don't know what he is. I made my comment to point out even if we assume the worst of him, hip hop allows way more dangerous ideas to fester within it. I personally do not like his style so what is in his inner heart doesn't matter to me.
@Burry Bondz Fine, you don't like his style. To each his own. Music is subjective. My point is that based on the content in his music, it's a stretch to call him rac*st. He couldn't make the important conversation inspiring pieces he made if he wasn't independent. Gangbangers, dealers, alleged killers, and drug abusers are promoted by people like this, but his music is suppressed to hell, and taken out of context by these cheese d*ck gatekeepers to fit a specific political narrative. Have a nice day✌️

During the earlier days of the pandemic, I discovered this guy on UA-cam, knowing nothing previously about him. I mean, for like 15 seconds it was kind of amusing. But, you soon discover that not only was the content catering to a crowd that is nuts, it was paper-thin. No depth to anything. After about 3-4 tracks, it was all sounding exactly the same. Track after track pops up and they ALL sound the same. So, that's what I remembered. I was bored that afternoon, I guess.
I wholeheartedly agree my view of tom is the same, i kind of like him but he contradicts himself a lot.
“His music/presence is dangerous, people predisposed may act on what he’s saying.”
Isn’t that literally the same argument used in order to censor rap since it’s inception?
