Thanks for sharing the data. The way I interpret your data is like this For 3S config: 10x5 RCTimer and 9x4.7 Gemfan are basically the same. This means same flight time as you would normally expect but the RCTimer ones are more efficient when spun at high RPM as it's demonstrated in 4S configuration. I just calculated how many wattage the motor uses per 100g of thrust. RCTimer 10x5 props are the most efficient props in all range of throttle curve. For 4S config: Again, 10x5 RCTimer props are the most efficient (less wattage but more thrust) props compared to other 8" and 9" Gemfan. For comparison between 3S and 4S for RC Timer props, I'll post the analysis later on. But for a quick glance, both 3s and 4s configuration data exibit a log function graph. Based on your data, the RCTimer props are the way to do. Would you be able to confirm your flight experience with those props?
It will def help out others that can't decide which prop size/type to use. Good job. I love my APC and wouldn't choose anything else. I switched to RCTIMER carbon fiber props cuz everyone raves about CF, and they were trash. They were so off balanced I packed them up without putting all of them on my quad and shipped them back. I have used headsuprc in the past to buy my apc props but the last order they didnt have the size I wanted so I bought from apc themself. The multirotor props are new.
Thanks for sharing your findings....Have been running 8x4.5 RCtimer carbon fibers on my Sunnysky980;s and HT-FlipFPV quad. Llooking to try a different prop sizes since I now have 3s and 4s LiPo's now. Your video helped so much.
smaldo19 It is definitely a help although I'll be sticking to basic nylon props during experimental flying. Actually I was wondering if you could help me with the ESC for these. I've specified 30A ESC's for my build but feel 20A should be plenty and save me 18g. Common wisdom tells me to opt for the 30A though; if one blows 300ft up, it's all over...
Kabab Your results are more consistent than anything else I've seen. Good job on your testing methods. It seems this motor cannot draw more than 16.1A if it tried. In which case I would be safe with a 20A ESC... (I'll never try larger than 10x5 CF prop on 4S)
Kabab Thanks, the testing seemed to work well. You're right about the motor maxing out at 16amps. There really wasn't any difference between 8', 9' and 10' props on 4S. 20amp ESC should be fine, 30amp does ensure you don't have any heat issues. I've been using Hobbyking F30A ESCs and flashing them with SimonK.
smaldo19 Will I reeeally have heat issues with a 20A ESC on this motor? Is 4A of overhead not enough? I want to go with the 20A because I'll likely downgrade the motors to slower/larger prop in time, but don't wanna burn'em up in the meantime...
If you ever make another prop testing video, please consider including the 10x4.7 apc readings as well as some 8x4.5 prop readings. So many people using these wonderful Sunnysky 980's
Great video. Thanks for sharing on my video earlier of my quad fpv. I did have a broke prop and didn't fix it so I had jello in the video. I have flown most of the different types of props in your video. I choose, and always fly apc props. On my tbs disco I fly the apc multirotor 10x3.8. Running a 3S 5000mah.
I haven't seen the matter of battery power rating come up. Has extended running tests also been done? I'm just building here for the first time, and am getting my prop - motor - battery - cost equation worked out. Been trying to nail down the rating for these Sunnysky x2212 motors. I've seen 180 W posted, but better looking records that say 150 W. The numbers there lay in the mid range of your show tests. I'm going to go with the APC 10x4.7S - Sunnysky x2212 - 3S combo It would be awesome to see some recommendations about usable results towards continuous flying. Great post.
Spectacular video! there is two kind of sunny sky, 2212-13 Kv980 and 2216-12 Kv 800, my quad weight 4 pouns and I use 2 3s of 2600mah, witch motor could you recoment/ Thanks.
Thanks mate, was a little bit of stuffing around to put it together. Hope it can help others. I might have to look at some of the APC multirotor props. Where do you get them from?
Great guide. Thanks so much for posting it. I'm planning on using these with the Gemfan 8x4.5 nylon/carbon mix on 4s. However I was wondering whether you could run them using the same props on 3s? Or would it be too many amps?
smaldo19 Thanks for the quick reply. I still plan to run 4s, but I have a lot of 3s lipos so I thought I'd try using them as well. If you think there's no danger to the motors then I'll give it a go.
I am thinking of using EMAX XA2212-980KV. I know sunnysky is better, but can you give me an idea what is EMAX's current draw at 300g thrust with 1045 carbon nylon propeller (3S battery). It would be better if you have a graph or a test as above because i can't find any.
When you tested the APC 1047 props, did you use a 3S or 4S? I built a X930 with these motors and APC 1047 props and the motors/ESCs get a little warm. They don't get hot, just warmer than my other multirotors. I'm using a 3S now. I'm curious to try 4S. Thank you! great video!
The APC 1047 were run on 3S. They would get too hot on 4S but you could try the APC 9x4.5 MR props. I've been using the 1047 on 3S on my quad for a long time now, never had an issue even on really hot days.
hyprmtr No sorry, I didn't measure temp but they weren't hot to touch. I was mainly concerned with max amp draw and how much thrust was available at certain throttle settings. Hard acro flying may lead to the motors getting hot but with normal flying you will be fine. You should aim for hover at 50% thrust (thrust = double the take off weight). Hope this helps :)
ciaooo I have to choose the motors to be mounted on a 10 Xugong, I can mount the propellers up to 10 ", use afro 30 amp, dj naza lite, 4s 4000 mha. everything should be around 1360 g (with 980 kv) and 1440 (with 900 kv) I'm undecided between 2 motors: -sunnysky from 980 kv (I see that they are very used with 4s) or 2216 to 900KV. I'm interested that the motor are not much warmer. I do not care to have a fast setup, I just need the quad to get up to 50% of gas, I'd rather have a few minutes more flight. I would use the 9x5 graupner
Thanks for a very informative vid I'm in the process of building a heavy lift video platform quad weighing in at about a shade over a kilo Are these motors any good for heavy lifting Thanks Brian London
Hey I'm using a 2216 900kv motor with 30a esc and on a tarot with 3s lipo and gimbal total weight is at 2.7.. Can I change the config to 4s for longer flight time.. can my sunny sky 900kv 2216 with 1047 carbon props handle.?or will it overheat?
Wow I'm sold on these motors as I've had a set on my Tti for months now and they have had Major ABUSE! and lots of tlc combined and I would definately be getting some 8" Gemfan props and your stats bear out what I suspected all along that the 8" is the way to go with these motors their efficiency is outstanding for a plastic prop and great balance...cheers Fly Safe Fly Hard Fly Heaps JC inAuz
Hi! I just ordered some SunnySky X2212 KV980. This is my first build. Do you know what size bullet connectors they would come with? I'd like to order some for my ESCs. Thanks
20amp ESC should be fine as you shouldn't be pulling anymore than 15-16amp. In reality, you'd probably be under 10amps most of the time. Given 4 motors @15amp= 60amp, a 3000mah pack would want to be at least 20c. Running these motors on 4S and up to 15amp would probably lead to some heat issues.
Thanks to the test info.it was great.. Can you tell me what was the AUW of the quadcopter which you showed us on the video and its specification.I am also building the same.. and got some doubts...:)
+Francesco Morigi Oh dear, how do you achieve that? I just bought 4 980kv genuine sunnysky's with 2 pairs of 10x4.5 cf props (they are cheap though) and I have 99% the same config like you just a 4200 battery and I dont get it fly for more than 10 minutes... Any tip or suggestion are welcome. Regards.
Stupid question: by increasing the propeller diameter for these motors you get less throttle + more payload but you go over the Watt limit of the motors correct ? Can that damage the motors ? EDIT:** what's the Watt limit for these ?
Most specs say 160w but you should't have any issues if you stay below 200w. There are plenty of people running them above 200w, you'll just need to be aware of any overheating. Probably will reduce the life of the motor too. Increasing prop diameter normally increases thrust at the expense of speed. If you want lifting capacity, a large diameter/lower pitch prop is best. For speed, a smaller diameter, higher pitch prop is needed. I would suggest 10' slofly props on 3S and 9' APC style on 4S for this motor.
+smaldo19 ... But i see that you tried 10x5 that looks nice.. I Didn't understand... 10x5 Rctimer is not good than for this Sunnysky in 4s ?? Will it get very hot with this props??
+JON-JON AEROMODELISMO I use 1050 graupner props with 980kv sunnysky motors on 4S and got 12min flight times with 3 axis gimbal, folding legs and arms. All goes nicely for like year !
Please can you test this motor on 3S with new HQprops 9,4X4.3 (DJI style) i think this is the winning combo for this motor on 3s in terms of efficiency :)
Shit propellers! I have both carbon and plastic. Copter flying with them both on the brakes! Very small step 4.3 ... choose the best option 9x4.7 - try it and believe it! (Beautiful does not mean that good)
well when I select my frame for mistake I bough a f330 instead a f450 , I decide don't change it because you know all the time those things take from China. so I replace my 10 inches hat I bought before for 8 inch genfan 8045. and the model look good .I was afraid that the battery was too powerful for the engines and I could burn them or something like that . thank you for your attention I will keep you posted .
smaldo19 Thanks, I will like to buy but I'm between x2212 980kv or x2216 1100kv , my quad is 1.6kg and have read on rcgroup that 2212 980kv can be used on quad bellow 1.2kv, what is you opinion, I will like for mediu fpv and video, also I will use 3s 5000mah, what you think?
Vlad P My quad is 1.7kg with brushless gimbal+gopro and FPV gear and it flies fine on these motors @ 3S. You can always go 4S if you want a bit more performance but you'll need to go down to 9x5 size props (APC MR or Graupner).
smaldo19 I have bunch of 3s 5000mah and I don't want to spent again on batteries. Where you bought the sunnysky? I wanted to buy from banggood but after I found on rcgroups thats alot of people is complaining regarding the bearing quality (seems that is not selling original) Thanks for your help, I'm really a bit confused which motors to buy don't want to spent again money on something that aren't performance and have good fly time, btw now I have turnigy D2836/8 1100 but are unbalanced and draw a lot of power, seems to big for this weight.
We sell these Sunnysky self tightening prop adapters that come with spinner bullets. www.jumpusa.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=J&Product_Code=PROPADAPTER&Attributes=Yes&Quantity=1
i was thingking of getting one, based on the props. DJI props cant be used right?... my defalut ESC is 20a and its good with this motor,3s lipo. , ,WLtosy V303
HIModel doesn't have more APC 10x4.7Sf, do you think this are the same you bought www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-APC-10x4-7-Slo-Flyer-Propeller-LP10047SF-NIB-/291116519804?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43c7e5917c and also I found APC pusher prop but don't think that we should use on quad www.ebay.com/itm/331180643394, Thanks
smaldo19 will a 1045 carbon fiber prop overheat the motor too? or is the CF 1045 prop equivalent to a 9045 carbon nylon composite prop? I assume that the current draw of CF is less than that of a Carbon nylon composite such as Gemfan's.
Great video, I want to use these props www.rctimer.com/product_638.html on the sunnysky 2212 with a 3s. Is this a good choice? if I make an order at himodel i have to pay more for shipping than my props, so I try to find a solution and i came to this solution.
I haven't used those RCTimer props. They look like a similar profile to the APC SF props and should be fine in terms of current draw on 3S. The APC props seem to be better balanced out of the packet. The cheaper props seem to be way out of balance in the hub. If you can source the APC SF and SFP props locally that is what I would recommend. Note the APC props are sold individually as a standard and pusher prop, not in CW/CCW sets.
after whole 10yr still ur videos are worth , thanks a lot brother

4lbs is OK for the x2212 980kv motor. My quad flies pretty well at this weight. You really want 4S for the 2216-12 Kv 800.
Thanks mate, was a little bit of stuffing around to put it together. Hope it can help others. I might have to look at some of the APC multirotor props. Where do you get them from?

You'll draw less amps on 3S. You really need 10" props on 3S otherwise they won't create much thrust. Probably only 650-700g with 8x4.5 on 3S.
smaldo19 Thanks for the quick reply. I still plan to run 4s, but I have a lot of 3s lipos so I thought I'd try using them as well. If you think there's no danger to the motors then I'll give it a go.

I have to choose the motors to be mounted on a 10 Xugong, I can mount the propellers up to 10 ", use afro 30 amp, dj naza lite, 4s 4000 mha. everything should be around 1360 g (with 980 kv) and 1440 (with 900 kv)
I'm undecided between 2 motors:
-sunnysky from 980 kv (I see that they are very used with 4s) or 2216 to 900KV.
I'm interested that the motor are not much warmer. I do not care to have a fast setup, I just need the quad to get up to 50% of gas, I'd rather have a few minutes more flight.
I would use the 9x5 graupner
980kv will fly really well at 1360g on 4S. My quad is around 1700g and still flies well. 9x5 graupner are great props.
smaldo19 there is the danger these motors will burn in flight with 4s and 9x5 graupner?
Can you please share the motor efficiency for these prop sizes especially 8×45.
Check the chart at 2:20 - shows the info on 4S.
Thanks for a very informative vid I'm in the process of building a heavy lift video platform quad weighing in at about a shade over a kilo
Are these motors any good for heavy lifting
Thanks
Brian
London
+brian forward I guess heavy is all relative right.. These motors are good for about 400-500g flying weight each on 4S (quad = 4x500g= 2kg)
Wow I'm sold on these motors as I've had a set on my Tti for months now and they have had Major ABUSE! and lots of tlc combined and I would definately be getting some 8" Gemfan props and your stats bear out what I suspected all along that the 8" is the way to go with these motors their efficiency is outstanding for a plastic prop and great balance...cheers

where can i get APC 10x4.7SF ? i just find in hobbyking 10x4.7SF and in ebay APC 10x4.7 (there are no words SF)
whether it be the same?
Thank you
Hi! I just ordered some SunnySky X2212 KV980. This is my first build. Do you know what size bullet connectors they would come with? I'd like to order some for my ESCs. Thanks
Pretty sure they are 3mm. I didn't use them, soldered direct to ESC.
sorry me again, is it good to use 20amp esc and a 4s 20/30c lipo with these motors?
Thanks for your help ;)
20amp ESC should be fine as you shouldn't be pulling anymore than 15-16amp. In reality, you'd probably be under 10amps most of the time.
Given 4 motors @15amp= 60amp, a 3000mah pack would want to be at least 20c. Running these motors on 4S and up to 15amp would probably lead to some heat issues.
Very nice video! it was a great help to me...
Thanks! Just added info on APC 10x4.7SF props. These are the best I've used.
+smaldo19 do you think 1045 props could work on 1000kv motors with a 3s lipo?
+David Casino Yep, perfectly. Think about it : 980kv motors are just 20kv less than the ones you point, they are almost the same.
Thanks to the test info.it was great..
Can you tell me what was the AUW of the quadcopter which you showed us on the video and its specification.I am also building the same.. and got some doubts...:)
+Vivek Gr The AUW was around 1.7kg and it flew fine.
Thank you...dude..,and can I expect 25 min flight time with 2 5000 mah 25 c battery.. With these sunnysky motors and AUW 1.7kg..?
i think about 22 minutes. I have a 1 kg drone 3s 4500mah ---> 30minutes
Regards.
with my 3s 4500mah i Fly for less than 10 minute, i think that the problem is the battery. I'll buy a new battery on hobbyking
Where to buy APC 10x4.7SF ?
??? www.lowpricerc.com/product_info.php/apc-10x47-slow-flyer-prop-p-1207
awesome video. helped a lot with my decision. could you recommend a frame for this motor for gopro use?
The apc props you mentioned in the description, are they sold from hobbyking?
Doing a build with sunnysky motors :D
I don't think hobbyking sell them. You can find them at most local hobby shops, they are a very common brand of prop.
Ok :D
Hi. Why didn't you try the Prop 10x47 on Lipo 4S? Is not it recomended?
+JON-JON AEROMODELISMO 9x5 is the max for 4S - 10" props will over heat this little motor :)
+smaldo19 Ok. Thanks guy!
+smaldo19 ... But i see that you tried 10x5 that looks nice.. I Didn't understand... 10x5 Rctimer is not good than for this Sunnysky in 4s ?? Will it get very hot with this props??
JON-JON AEROMODELISMO Yes, they will get too hot.
+JON-JON AEROMODELISMO I use 1050 graupner props with 980kv sunnysky motors on 4S and got 12min flight times with 3 axis gimbal, folding legs and arms. All goes nicely for like year !
thanks
Please can you test this motor on 3S with new HQprops 9,4X4.3 (DJI style) i think this is the winning combo for this motor on 3s in terms of efficiency :)
Shit propellers! I have both carbon and plastic. Copter flying with them both on the brakes! Very small step 4.3 ... choose the best option 9x4.7 - try it and believe it! (Beautiful does not mean that good)
will the graupners 9x5 fit without an adapter?
Yes
this is my first quadcopter, I decide for 2212/920 kv motors, 30 A ESC and 3000 mAmp , 4s 20c Battery . Somebody can tell me if the set is adequate ?
Yes that will work well. 9x5 graupner props are the best for a 4s setup.
well when I select my frame for mistake I bough a f330 instead a f450 , I decide don't change it because you know all the time those things take from China. so I replace my 10 inches hat I bought before for 8 inch genfan 8045. and the model look good .I was afraid that the battery was too powerful for the engines and I could burn them or something like that . thank you for your attention I will keep you posted .

Most local hobby shops stock APC props. The likes of HobbyKing only sell "APC style" props which aren't original APC props, just copies.
smaldo19 Thanks, I will like to buy but I'm between x2212 980kv or x2216 1100kv , my quad is 1.6kg and have read on rcgroup that 2212 980kv can be used on quad bellow 1.2kv, what is you opinion, I will like for mediu fpv and video, also I will use 3s 5000mah, what you think?
I got the motors from HiModel dot com. NTM are rubbish :P
What will be the result of using 11 x 4.7 props on these motors?
11x4.7 might be OK if they were APC style, not slowfly. I think they would still draw too much current and run hot.
smaldo19
OK, your advise will help.
what about the lifting weight?
what r ur flight time with the 4s....i must know
Took a little longer to setup :)
We sell these Sunnysky self tightening prop adapters that come with spinner bullets.

i was thingking of getting one, based on the props. DJI props cant be used right?...
my defalut ESC is 20a and its good with this motor,3s lipo. , ,WLtosy V303
You think 25amp plush Esc is also acceptable with 10x4.7 props ?
Im currentky using 10x5 3s lipo 20amp. The motor heats up. I have no way to measure the current drawn using 10x5 on 20amp esc
Oh going by your values rather than the stock tables that are not as reliable as yours.
Nice
Please figure the best fan
HIModel doesn't have more APC 10x4.7Sf, do you think this are the same you bought www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-APC-10x4-7-Slo-Flyer-Propeller-LP10047SF-NIB-/291116519804?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43c7e5917c
and also I found APC pusher prop but don't think that we should use on quad www.ebay.com/itm/331180643394, Thanks
Is this series II?
Yes, series II
smaldo19 What is the difference between series I and series II ?
znagy93 Improved efficiency I presume, or else there wouldn't be much of a point making a revision to a motor.
For 4s better be 9x5 or 10x4.5?
9x5 graupner on 4S is the way to go. 10x4.5 on 4S will overheat the motor.
smaldo19
will a 1045 carbon fiber prop overheat the motor too? or is the CF 1045 prop equivalent to a 9045 carbon nylon composite prop? I assume that the current draw of CF is less than that of a Carbon nylon composite such as Gemfan's.
Awesome!!!!!!4444444 Thanks for the infos
No worries :)
Great video,
I want to use these props www.rctimer.com/product_638.html on the sunnysky 2212 with a 3s.
