Back in the 80s and 90s subway was pretty damn good. I would compare it to today’s jersey mikes. They have fallen off harder, in terms of quality, than any food chain ever. I’ve put some thought into this, and if they could just get their bread back to good, it would be transformational. They honestly may have been better than jersey mikes, at least some subs.
Totally agree. We’d go there once a week and get 4 six inch subs (I think there was some local coupon), one for each family member. Very tasty. Now it’s thrown together. You can make 80% of the quality at home with a toaster for 15% of the price
Honestly the price has just gotten to expensive for what the product is. I looked the other week for the first time in years and they wanted $13 for a foot long! I can go down the street and get a real meatball sub, made by an actual Italian restaurant, for around $9. The deals have gotten worse too. they had some kind of buy one get 50% off a second deal, but they excluded everything but the basic sandwiches.
I've had luck with the code BOGOFTL at SOME Subways in my area... buy one footlong get one free. it's like having $5 footlongs again. but yeah menu prices are outrageous now. I used to work at subway about 5 years ago and couldn't believe some regulars were dropping that money on sandwiches every day. I am still a big fan of their food but won't go unless I can get a deal
If a fast food restaurant chain has more than four within a mile radius, especially when the business is down, the perceived gains would cannibalize each other, it didn’t help when their spokesperson acted maliciously toward kids.
They offer coupons but when you go into the Subway in Walmart, there is this note: they will not accept the coupons! Simply because they want more $$$ for those immigrant workers at the expense of ppl looking for savings and deals. No Subway stores in New York City accept those national coupons, just the ones you get at the corner just before you reach the store nearby (and with limited choices).
@@xx_sanic_da_heg_hoge_xx420 12 inch Italian BMT. American Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Peppers, Spinach, Banana Peppers and Jalapenos w/Oil. I am having the second part of my sandwich as I type, lol.
I REALLY could not stand their deceptive advertising...ESPECIALLY how they call themselves "Doctor's Associates" to try to fool people into thinking their food is recommended/endorsed by doctors.
As a former employee for years, I can confidently say that their corporate, higher-up staff are solely the reason for their demise. They make those decisions thinking that they'll never come back to haunt them. Subway still has potential, but they're shooting themselves in the foot at the top of the ladder..
All local Subways discontinued their sub of the day. I use to eat there 3-4 times a week for years. Since the discontinuance, I haven't been back once, almost 8 months. Other options have been found.
We had four subways before the pandemic. The two that were in Walmart and Meijer closed during the pandemic then this year one subway was torn down due to the strip they were in being torn down so, we're down to one around here. The last time we went there it was bad really bad.
As a frequent DG critic, I gotta say you nailed this one. I'm a bit of an insider, and I would have to say that the catalyst of Subway's decline was the death of Fred DeLuca. He had a haphazard way of running the company, but somehow he made it work. Now, it's dire. Paying athletes isn't going to bring in customers, and they're not working for scale. Look for Subway to go the way of Quiznos.
Subway is like the Fila of the fast food world where like Fila, the quality has gone down significantly more than what it was in the 90's which was the heyday for both (though Subway had a longer boom that lasted into the 2000's). This is because in my view both Fila & Subway decided at some point to go with cheaper materials/ingredients as a way of reducing costs while also maintaining profits. However for both of them, this came back to bite them big time when customers realized that they were paying the same price for lower quality products. I used to like both of them but now I view both of them as terrible & should be avoided.
Well when it’s almost $30 for two footlong subs without any drinks or such, that’s kinda too expensive. Then they have the nerve to have a tip option, like why am I tipping a subway worker when they don’t even load up the sandwich, they put a little bit of toppings. Load it up and I’ll tip you otherwise you get nothing. You ask for onion or whatever and they put like the tiniest bit and you want a tip? I’ll go back there and do it myself tbh.
When it went international it failed. In ireland for example there are 4 shops in a near me town of 6000 people that has sandwiches vastly superior to anything subway has.
Edit: I was wrong. The new WTC is the one I heard this about, but I assumed i was hearing about the original WTC. Subway is part of the WTC story. A portable Subway restaurant was fixed to the side during construction and would rise as the work site grew.
when I used to be in uni I played drop in soccer and after that I would bus back towards home. would have to take two busses, and the bus stop that was there was a subway and it was so convenient. Loved that subway and every Monday Wednesday Friday afternoon id have subway. Now I drive past what used to be a subway which is unfortunately a KFC
Subway was awesome BITD, but truthfully be told, their subs are shitty. Plus the Jared Fogle scandal really hurt them. I know some people still till this day have said they they will never eat at a Subway again. Plus Jersey Mike's, Firehouse Subs, and Jimmy John's blows Subway out the 💧!!
Long ago I worked at a Subway across from 2 bars. Of course I just had to be working the night shift. God those people were so stupid. It always took them 5 to 10 minutes to figure out that they want the same thing that they always would get. And it was always Uhhhh ..... Duuuuuhhhh .... Mmhhheeeeeetbhalll. Worst job I have ever had and I have had some really bad ones. Subway going down is God doing the world a pretty big favor.
used to work at subway too. my area had almost universally pleasant customers, but people asking "what's supposed to come on it?" after they picked a sandwich drove me up a wall. it's like people were convinced there was some secret set of predetermined toppings I was hiding from them, as if I was lying about it being completely at the customer's discretion. lol.
They built too many to begin with, other sub companies have higher quality product. Throw in Jim Crow Joe's economic policies and inflation, stores closing is the natural result
I like Blimpie, Potbelly, Planet Sub, Jersey Mike’s, Schlotzsky's, The Great Outdoors, Firehouse Subs, Quizno’s, Jimmy Johns, and Which Wich? way better than Subway. Last time I ate Subway I had the meatball sub, and after eating it I sharted in my pants and had to walk around in it till I could get home and wash up. I never want to eat Subway’s gross subs again. I’ll just go to one of these pricer sandwich shop locations I mentioned above and get some better quality subs.

$16.29 for a "meatball" sub that uses the same balls as Chef Boyardee? THIS is why Subway is dying...
Going to Subway as a kid was one of my favorite things to do. Usually I would grab a 12 inch turkey sandwich and lemonade.
@breadandcircuses8127For eating 😉

Very true
I’m not surprised they saturated the shit out of the marketplace. And it’s hard to keep hiring good people and maintain quality with all those stores
Was pleasantly surprised to see you uploaded a video that wasn't about sports or 9/11 lol
Absolutely. Broadening his approach. ..

More than inside Walmart. Any random place
I liked subway a lot more before they changed everything up. No more honey oat bread or regular sweet onion sauce, no bueno.
Subway as of right now is doing okay here in Australia but Heaven help them if Jimmy John's, Jersey Mike's, or Firehouse ever comes.

6 of the 8 Subways here shut down about a year ago. When they pulled out of a local convenient store chain.

@reddingmalik No problem. There's a lot of them in Ohio.
