I've been waiting to hear your thoughts on this one and was quite pleased indeed. I often think of you as the authority on David Mitchell's fiction and you definitely proved that here - great stuff.
What a wonderful review! Funny enough the things you didn‘t really care for are all things I love reading about, plus your still strong enjoyment definitely convinced me to pick this one up!
Thank you Matthew. I too have David Mitchell up on a pedestal and have been wondering about this latest work. Thousand Suns is the only book in his back catalogue that I haven’t read (tried twice, stalled both times) so it was very interesting to hear you speak about the interplay between the two titles. Mitchell is an author I find fascinating as much for pondering over his ‘philosophy’ (🙄😑) or motivations as a writer as for reading (and largely very much enjoying) is works. I will definitely pick UA soon. Jenny over at Reading Envy podcast is also a Mitchell fan and had a very positive reading experience, so....😊 And I will likely give Thousand Suns another run at some point. some books just take more work to unlock than others and I trust Mitchell enough to believe that there is will ‘something’ there to make the effort worthwhile. Indeed, Cloud Atlas took me a couple of tries as I hated the opening narrative, but once I pushed past that and began to understand the book’s overall project, I flew through the novel and ended up really enjoying it. Curious to know if you have distinct favourites among his titles? Thanks again. 🦊📚🤓
I totally understand why you gave up twice on Jacob de Zoet, I'm surprised that I managed to finish that book but it did take a lot out of me, I really want to give it a reread soon though! I think my two favourites from Mitchell have to be Number9Dream and The Bone Clocks, the former is definitely an exciting read which might be a bit confusing but I loved what it did and is certainly more aligned with my general reading tastes, whereas Bone Clocks I think is just his most successful book which highlights how he has developed over his career to create something as brilliant as that!
@@mcs-books9075 Number9Dream and Ghostwritten are probably my favourites though it's been a while since I read either title. I also have a soft spot for Black Swan Green - Mitchell and I are close in age and so that coming-of-age tale in 1980s UK really resonated with me.
(also, I don't know why I repeatedly referred to The Thousand AUTUMNS as The Thousand Suns in my original message - it is bl***y hot here but still! 😳😂)
I have both loved and been indifferent to various Mitchell works but boy this one tempts me 😆 Maybe I just feel ready to dedicate the time to his work properly? Either way, really loved hearing your thoughts on this!
