- Highlights from the 1/8/89 NFC Championship game between the 49ers and the Bears. The game was played in extremely cold weather. At one point it was 26 below zero. The 49ers won the game 28-3. Audio is from KGO. Lon Simmons and Wayne Walker with the call.
I recorded this game on VHS with radio/audio patched into my VCR. That was back when it actually sync'd up over the air. Possibly the entire game later but for now just the highlights.
#49ers #chicagobears #lonsimmons
Lon Simmons, the best ever. Memorable as 49ers and Giants announcer.
Don’t forget, he also did the A’s from 81-95, with Bill King…that’s a pretty good duo!
Joe Starkey was good but Lon Simmons was the best. Period.
"Marshall is running the wrong way!"
What a great treat to hear the late great Lon Simmons finally call an NFC Championship win by the 49ers. He called the first and second NFC Championship Games in 1970 and 1971. Unfortunately wins by the Cowboys. Go 49ers!
This 49er team was so much more than a finesse team. Great call by Lon Simmons and Wayne Walker.
Lon Simmons, Wayne Walker, and Bill Walsh’s Niners. As good as it gets! ❤❤❤
The Bay Area was blessed to have two absolutely legendary broadcasters. Lon Simmons was great, and Bill King for the Raiders was, arguably, the best ever.
Lon is The Gold Standard
Gerald, you're awesome. Thanks for posting this. My brother, who is a Bears fan, will of course, not be as appreciable as me.
Lon Simmons and Wayne Walker. Radio broadcasting royalty. Announcers today just don’t compare.
I'd forgotten how good these guys were.
I never did.
I remembered the game and I remember Lon Simmons 🏈🫶🏼👍🙏
Lon the Legend. Also called A’s and Giants magnificently at different times
I remember listening to Lon Simmons with my pop as a teenager in mid to late 70's. Growing up in Sacramento we were blacked out because the niners didn't sell out then. That all changed once Bill Walsh built the team from 79 on I started watching on TV. Lon Simmons was the best and I would have liked to see him on T.V.
Oh shit Thank u Gerald. Finally Finnnnaly I get a chance to hear Lon. My Favorite
I think the reason I liked Lon Simmons so much was his obvious emotion for the 49ers. He could get quite excited at times - like the Rice catch in this video.
LOVED hearing Lon. He called A’s games on radio with Bill King. His best moment: calling the third out that clinched the ‘89 World Series sweep over the Giants.
The GREAT OL DAY!!!!!
Thanks for this awesome video!
You are a treasure for videos like this and the Papa highlights
One of my favorite Goat catch and touchdown runs ever
😊 a thrilling game to experience all over again. Thanks for sharing it
Wayen Walker was wrong about Rathman picking up Hampton on the first TD - it was a blitzing Singletary that he stoned. Great block.
Always thought Simmons got robbed not being the announcer for the 81 season. Could you have imagined him calling “The Catch”!
Don Klein was great though too. Walsh actually asked him to do the 49ers games since he knew him being the voice of Stanford. They also also moved the broadcasts from KSFO to KCBS, and Klein was the sports director there
@@sre94 Simmons got it paid back with the 89 Super Bowl and Taylor call!
Mahalo for this! Lon was the best! Always wished he would’ve called The Catch…
I was 7 years old, my first season with vivid memories of the Chicago Bears. I remember my dad and I talking about how cold weather was going to play in our favor. This game destroyed the myth of “bear weather.” A coworker of my dad had a watch party for this 1988 nfc title game. I was disappointed that I spent the last half of the 4th quarter watching a few other kids play Castlevania knowing that the bears would not be playing Cincinnati in SB XXIII.
i miss lon
I got his autograph when I was a junior in high school (he did a signing at a hardware store in my hometown). As an aspiring broadcaster, that was as exciting to me as getting a player's signature (although despite being a huge 49ers fan, I knew him more from doing A's games since back then, they didn't televise most of the home games in Oakland so I heard his voice quite often)
Lon Simmons was the best! I wish Kyle would involve Juice in todays offense the way Rathman was back then!
❤️Lon Simmons❤️
Lou, the Super Bowl XXIII voice.
Ditka's Bears. Their defense was a shell by then. SF was beating them on the most basic plays, Rice was open all the time. There was so much space between the other receivers as well. The offensive line was getting beat up the entire game. This was the end of the '85' Bears.
It was, I was 7 and this was my first year having solid , vivid memories of the Bears, I wasn’t quite old enough to remember the 85 season. This was the last shot in regards to that roster for a chance to play Cincinnati in Super Bowl XXlll. 1989 sucked , later this year the SF Giants beat the Cubs in the NLCS. I was furious with San Francisco.
This is when the 49ers were bad ass..Every time 49ers went to the Superbowl you knew they were taking it..Today they choke
They darn near choked in the 88' Superbowl against Cincy. Completely outplayed Cincy, but turnovers and some horrific special teams play let them hang around.
@kevinbrennan-ji1so Scoreboard baby..Bungles 16 49ers 20 and that's all it matters
@@kevinbrennan-ji1soThank God Lewis Billups drop that interception 🙏
I know those were great 49ers teams. These 49ers make me 😭
@@MikeNolan I agree 👍 Kyle Jed York 🤮 🤮 Eddie D Bill Walsh 👏 👏 👏
Great seeing these highlights. Imagine how Montana would've been judged if he were in Purdy's shoes today in the social media era and extensive over analysis of things from every angle.
"Throw to rice at 2:02 was too high, is he trying to get him killed!!?"
"How does he not step up in the pocket and get rid of it so he doesn't get sacked at 0:53"
Also goes for the defense
"How can Lott not tackle his guy at 4:37. So much for woooo hits"
Anyways, I digress. Fun seeing this classic of how the finesse a** 49ers came in and beat the bears when it was clear advantage.
That Joe Montana is simply a game managing system quarterback 😂
Awesome thanks.
Listening to Lon again reminds me of how bad Papa is.
I used to like Papa back when he called A’s games a long time ago. Now he just shouts and screams and repeats the same thing over and over again. Like every completed pass is “and he’s wide open!!” I’m like he wasn’t wide open. 😂
@@jpete3027666 Papa’s homer howling is unbearable. Tim Ryan is even worse.
@@taco2k3 yeah I thought Greg Robinson and Eric Davis more recently were a lot better than this duo. Everything from Papa and Ryan is just cheesy as hell.
@@jpete3027666 Actually Ted Robinson, but I agree. I’d take Ted and Eric back in a heartbeat.
Would love the complete game if possible. Love this, any others like this with radio? Thx😊
May post entire game buts it's a lot of work...and yes have a few more games like this
@gerald605 i also enjoyed the ktvu postgame. I have a really big 49ers game collection back to the 70s. I have probably all of the games in 80s except 2 or 3. If you need anything let me know.
@@rodehrlich2357I'm def interested...let's talk...reach out to me...my contact info is on my UA-cam homepage next to my photo
The talk about this game was that a west coast team like the 9ers couldn’t play or beat a team in cold weather 🥶But Ronnie Lott and the Goat were on the field that day
🗣️RATHMAN! 3:42 #nofear! 💯 💪
For bears fans who say that had they had Jim mcmahon for qb for the 1984 NFC championship game played in January 1985 in SF, the bears would have won, I point to this game here in Chicago.
Team of the 80s Bowl.
@7:24 Singletary is like don't THINK I'm gonna be coaching you all some day uh uh, can't do it...
Still remember the newspaper headline (Chronicle/Sporting Green?): “Rice Puts The Bears On Ice”
07:58 Ray Ray should watch some of that film…
We gotta stop losing Super Bowls.
Rivera blows another tackle.
Ditka and Lott post game.
Wayne walker: the original Joe Montana is as cool as the other side of the pillow. The ESPN guy stole it from him
Ahhhh how NFL and football has changed for the worst.
You say its worse, but the game is more popular today than ever.
@@paulb10486 go figure. It’s basically flagged football.
@@SKS8080 Yeah, that explains all the injuries today.
@@paulb10486 r u kidding me? U can’t hit a QB high. U can’t hit him low. U can barely do anything anymore. Can u imagine LT or Ronnie Lott playing by today’s rules?????
@@SKS8080 Just bc the game is safer than it used to be doesnt mean its not physical, you doofus.
God McMahon was awful
