The name of this fragrance, as well as the other leather fragrances in this line, are inspired by how certain cultures traditionally scented leather. People have been wearing animal hides for thousands of years, and if you strip the hide from an animal, it will start decaying and smell like rotting flesh. To counteract that, there is a tanning process to put the hide through, including putting fragrant oils into the skin to mask the stink. So, the fragrance here is inspired by the blend of fragrance oils that they used somewhere in Africa to scent leather. That's why it doesn't smell like the way we think leather should smell, which is just the smell of the chemicals used in the tanning process. Similarly, French Leather, Russian Leather, Irish Leather, etc., they are all inspired by what oils those countries used to scent leather a long time ago before modern tanning processes.
@@JohnJimmyJoe it's all that and then some. I love it. They do a lot with the blends to also bring out our accustomed idea of what leather smells like. Furthermore something like Russian leather which is a birch tar process in the tanning that goes back to Neanderthal times. So many tales to tell.
Absolutely digging your channel more and more dude. Aside from you, I don't know of ANYONE else in Fragcom that does the rundown, analysis, and statistics the way you do. Quite frankly, it's a breath of fresh air. Great review, and great content man - I love African Leather by Memo Paris.
Been curious about this for quite awhile, glad to see your detailed take on this one! I've been in the hunt for the ultimate rose scent lately, and really want to try African Rose by them as well. Though I'm afraid to love it, because it is insanely pricey.
Yeah 😅 it’s crazy how the good ones get discontinued. I’d love to try African rose. I am super picky with rose fragrances I think my memory association keeps me from enjoying them. The two roses I’ve liked and wear are Arabian Oud Royal Oud which has a really nice blend of animalic Oud and rose. I also love Rose 31 the cumin and spices are just so great in that one it’s honestly addictive for me lol.
Some of them really surprise me, like TF plum japonais for instance. It seems crazy popular but I'm wondering if that happened after the fact due to fomo. Rose 31 definitely on my radar now!
Thank you for that. I have seen a few people post about this brand on other platforms, and it has piqued my interest. Well, it's time to try and locate some samples.
For me, African leather really grew on me. I got a sample a couple of years ago, and I was not a fan at first. I didn't want to throw away the sample so I came back to it and finished it out, and it wound up being my favorite. That said, I got a 10ml last year and still have a couple ml left
This has a polished black leather vide provided by all these herbs woods spices flowers... all with leather aspects. Blended perfectly like a symphony. The real kicker here is not listed. But it's palo santo. Burn palo santo while wearing this. Palo santo has a leather rubbery trail that is spiced. It really rounds off the polished black leather vibe. And this is a festive fragrance. it goes through stages on my skin not linear. I love this one. It might be my top leather
Hi there. Thank you for the well thought out video. I’m new seeing your channel but your honesty is very refreshing. African Leather is my signature scent so to speak and I’m not a guy - but I think it is completely unisex. I have a nice little collection of designer, niche and indie but this is me. I adore it. I agree with your point regarding the cumin smell - can be very offensive but truly I can’t pick this up with this. Maybe my nosie is broken 😀
My wife at the end of the video would agree with you that it’s unisex. I don’t think it’s full on masculine I could totally see a woman pulling it off. I bet my wife would wear it, I’m going to ask. Really just a nice smelling fragrance that’s very unique.
They are both spicy amber fragrances, but to my nose LADDM has a much prominent incense notes and the spices are more balanced, African Leather on the other hand doesn't have incense and it's basically a cardamom saffron bomb.
I can actually see that a lot. AL would be a designer/mass appealing version of LDDM which I love also. LDDM is not as sweet and eons dryer than AL. Great fragrance though.
I may need to try LDDM I feel I’ve abused my arousal system to the extent that more challenging means I’ll enjoy it more 😅. I’ve been getting into the more weird and dark fragrances lately. Feels like if it smells ‘too wearable’ it doesn’t excite me as much. I’m a mess.
@@CgScents haha. I've been there. Dude, I started out loving designers from my dad...I then went to niche, to artisan and back down to designers and back to whatever smells good and makes me smile. There are soooo many levels to this.
With African Leather, I compare it to Creed's Royal Oud. While not smelling the same, the vibe is similar. Royal oud is more CEO of the company and and African Leather is more the CEO's apprentice. I enjoy both and can't really pick between the two but yes, this is what I compare African Leather with. I guess I can get the Naxos comparison but I just don't care much for Naxos. I compare Naxos with Mugler's Pure Havane but would take Pure Havane over Naxos 8 days a week over Naxos
@@batu9967 Have you gotten your nose on African Leather? I don't know if you can dislike it if you love Royal Oud. Again, they don't smell the same but you would wear them in the exact same situations. They are two of my all-timers. After you get to African Leather, get your nose on Creed's Spice and Wood. Its the only Creed better than Royal Oud.

Now this is a masterpiece. I get so many compliments on this. Probably my top 3 complimented fragrance. 10/10 easy
Im really liking both your content and your format man. Its really refreshing to see someones opinions honestly laid bare in a logical way.

Awesome review ,almost bought this one a few times , but never pulled the trigger
African Leather is one of my absolute all-time favorites. Just manly and tough!
Honestly can completely see why it’s a must try for sure

Ill revisit my sample, but the first time i wore it it reminded me alot of tauers LDDM. So in my head i said nah i pretty much already have it.

@@wannabegolfin24-72 wow thanks for the recommendation I will definitely check it out never heard the spice and wood 💯
@batu9967 you're welcome. Start saving now for Spice & wood. It's Creed's most expensive fragrance i believe.
