This is reminding me so much of early-to mid 2010's mountain goats, which might be one of my favourite periods of their music. And the song being about the same people as the ones in color in your cheeks???? I cant fucking wait for this album
add me to the All Hail #1 list. but then there's Beautiful rat Sunset and Sweden and Tallahassee and The Sunset Tree and The Coroner's Gambit and the Life of the world to come and etc and it goes on like this for days... i confess i don't like these arrangements from the last handful of rekkids with the brass sections and etc. not the Goats i knew, but John's lyrics are still as genius as they've always been.
Ancient Greek on the album cover! Aeschylus, Seven Against Thebes 647-48: “I will bring this man back and he will have his city and move freely in his father’s halls"
Bless you for this! It looked familiar but I had no idea how to translate. By "familiar" I mean I went to Reed College when Humanities 101 (a required class for freshmen) covered work from the time, starting with the Iliad as required reading over the summer. We then continued to study that area and all the important dead white dudes who wrote plays, philosophy, etc. for the rest of the year. We studied some pottery/urns/physical art from the same period... so yeah, familiar. If I sound less than enthusiastic about the class: overall, it wasn't bad. Some of what we read was fantastic, but the 9AM lectures and 2 hour classes to discuss whatever we studied ended up being the first time I realized I was different... if I got bored (and didn't fall asleep) I'd start feeling antsy. Eventually I'd get to a point where I wanted to scream because boredom would shift into physical distress and discomfort. I'd have to walk out mid-lecture in full view of the entire class. I genuinely thought everyone felt that way! I just assumed they were better at handling it... when I asked friends and classmates how they managed to stay and listen while feeling so terrible: they didn't know what I was talking about. (・-・;)ゞYears later after graduating I was finally diagnosed with ADHD. *Anyway* Thanks for the translation! Humanities must still have some influence on me because I LOVE the cover art and pre-ordered a shirt as soon as I saw it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (BTW: I've heard a lot of recent Reed students have pushed to expand Humanities into MORE than just dead white dudes from that region. I've also heard they've been successful. I'm proud of them)
How clever! The larger section of the play being “Mighty Polynices shouts such threats and [640] invokes his native gods, the gods of his fatherland, to watch over his prayers in every way. He holds a shield, a perfect circle, newly-made, with a double symbol cleverly fastened on it: [645] a woman modestly walking in the fore leads a man in arms made, it appears, of hammered gold. She claims to be Justice, as the lettering indicates, “I will bring this man back and he will have his city and move freely in his father's halls.” Such are the inventions fixed to their shields” And isn’t that the album cover?
Twenty-two albums in and still absolutely incredible. Edit: Also have to point out I love how Copiah, Mississippi is marked on the globe for a couple seconds when JD mentions the name at 0:41
I hadn't notuced that, thanks! Also, when i checked that out i also noticed that the same is true for "one from East St. Louis" in the first sentence of the song at 0:24?
@@Thylaacine That's not St. Petersburg, looks more like Lithuania. Which, considering he says "Breakaway Republic Dude" would make more sense, he's from a republic that broke away from the Soviet Union. Taipei is also highlighted when he changes planes there.

The never ending fountain of music that is The Mountain Goats. Also, I can't be the only one who noticed that the terminator line is going the wrong direction? Or does it signify that something is happening in reverse?
Well, John, you've done it yet again. I cannot wait to hear the rest of this album if I already relate to Jenny so well. I was the "mother" of a house like Jenny's. I went through all the dirty kid rituals of addiction, poverty, shame, and desire.

Hey John, thanks for making cassettes for this. I know I'm a minority but I genuinely get excited when I see it in the store. I only ask you release older albums on cassette. Cheers brother.
Fairly random, but when John sings "breakaway republic dude", which I assume calls back to Soviet Georgia in Color in Your Cheeks, the animation highlights the baltics, not the caucasus. Not a criticism, just a fun bit of pedantry.

Seriously. Kinda creepy how accurate things are, and how much you needed to hear it.

exactly. Moving into my first apartment and starting my first real job. Clean Slate indeed.
Gods (Johns) blessings usually are right on time
John really doesn't stop, the man is indefatigable.
Indefatigable is a damn fine word. Untired after a long walk and able to walk on some more.
I'm amazed how John Darnielle can be so whimsical, so poignant, and so heartbreaking at the same time, and so consistently.
Very few writers in any medium can do it, let alone do it well. John is one of the few.
