  • In this video, I discuss a vintage Argentine fountain pen. I also talk a little about rehydrating ink cartridges.

    Hey Mr. Waski. I really enjoy your channel...thanks for all the hard work.....I'll share a hair story. About 10 years ago my wife decided that my hair was too gray and she was going to color it for me......though I protested, she did it anyway. well she put the color on and let it set, washed my hair and dry'd it with a towel,...and then she practically rolled on the floor with laughter! I look in the mirror and my hair was Orange yes Orange like a Carrot! Well I had to go to work the next day and my coworkers laughed and laughed and laughed for about 2 months. They called me "Carrot Top" and "Surfer Dude" It was actually a lot of fun. BTW I doubt you'll get a pen made in Antarctica unless there's a scientist down there that makes them as a hobby. Cheers!

      Nice story! I laughed! I actually had a student a few years ago who tried to bleach his hair. But, his hair was too dark, so it came out orange. He actually died a few years ago (and I was good friends with his grandmother who died this winter). So I want to thank you for bringing back a really light-hearted memory of him! That connection has been hard for me, so I sincerely thank you for helping me turn the corner on them. Funny how I didn't even know I needed this.

      Thank you! It was fun, I had never thought about fountain pens in that way, so it was an interesting challenge.

    Thanks for another great trip down the international road. You will note that the name Artcraft appears on the warranty enclosure. Artcraft has a long storied history of which I have done some of the research. Artcraft, and its original owner, Ford Cromer, started in Birmingham, Alabama. I wont bore you with all the details, but he eventually moved the Company to Argentina, and your pen is a descendant. My knowledge of what happened to Artcraft and some of the branding in Argentina (Escritor) is incomplete, but some of my research and accompany photos of both Artcraft (US), Argentina, and Escritor can be found in links here:
    munsonpens.wordpress.com/category/artcraft-fountain-pens/
    and
    munsonpens.wordpress.com/category/escritor-pens/
    I hope this helps add a bit to your Escritor puzzle.
    Your neighbor in Minnesota,
    Phil Munson

      This is really interesting! I'll bookmark this for my eventual review of this pen.

    On the barrel, due to the visible letters, I believe it is "INDUSTRIA ARGENTINA", which translates to Argentine Industry, close to "made in Argentina", like in the writings on the cartridge body. Thank you very much for the video.

      That makes sense! It's a fun pen, so thank you for sharing your contributions to it!

    Sorry the Sheaffer cartridges didn't work out. Glad you had one on hand.

      I think they'll work. They just need to be rehydrated. But the pen has a new issue with the cartridge I'll be showing during Pens in Use.

    Thank you for bringing the Argentina pen industry to my attention. I know nothing about South American pens but this video was interesting. I wonder if Escritor still make pens. I did a quick search but am none the wiser. I did find some pictures of other Escritor models on a couple of websites. As you said, this one is more of an everyday note taker, which is fine. It has covered quite a journey from its original factory all the way to North Dakota.

      I'm glad you enjoyed! I couldn't find any modern references to this company, though that means nothing. Very fun that this Argentine pen made it all the way north to my little town!

    Antarctica will be a little difficult, there are no factories in Antarctica hehe
    I never used the Escritor brand, I think the brand was gone by the 1970s. I remember that the first pen I used in elementary school was the 303 brand, which also used Sheaffer type cartridges. Cartridges of this type in addition to Sheaffer I remember the brands 303, Princesita and Banderita. Greetings from Argentina

      I think Antarctica may be my "Grail Pen", only more "grail" than most peoples' grail pens. Good to know about the other Argentine brands. I have one or two more pens from your country to show yet!

    Nice pen! I suspect permanent inks (fijo) are not soluble in water once they’ve dried.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, sometimes hoarding is helpful! That's a great point about _fijo_. I had not caught onto that. I know some permanent inks become permanent by reacting with the cellulose in the paper. Others change after they dry. This must be one of the latter.

    • @Johan-vk5yd

      WaskiSquirrel I see. That’s interesting. A new field of unscientific experimenting dawned on me!
      Of course this infornation was not new to me, but somehow it left my consious reasoning. Maybe partly from watching an Ink guy. He tests inkblots on paper, and each time comments that the effect on the blot by various agents would correspond to how easy the ink would be to clean out from a pen! Repetition is the mother of all learning, obviously regardless of its accuracy! And it happened to me without me being aware of it, which made the impact even stronger!

    I think maybe your Mohawk is slightly askew...

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  4 роки тому

      It probably is. It wasn't meant to be a Mohawk, but the initial attempt at cutting my hair went askew. It also turns out that my hair looks like a Holstein cow: patches of white amongst the dark.

    I would think that there would have to be some pen makers on the African continent, at least in countries like Egypt and South Africa. But maybe with Africa being screwed over by colonialism for so long pens were simply imported over the years. I'd say you may as well hang it up on the notion of Antarctica.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  4 роки тому +1

      I suspect you are right about Africa. All I've found so far are other brands, just manufactured in Africa. And, yes, I think the fountain pen industry in Antarctica is rather lacking...
