I've been a landscape photographer for 20 years now and I've shot all times of the night and day and I can say for a fact that i've seen light and objects interact in the most incredible ways. I've seen human and animals shapes appear and fade only to see it was tricks of the light. Out alone on my own before dawn in the most remote places when the weather is ideal for playing tricks on eyes and ears. I've managed to explain 99% of the oddball stuff I've seen. Light is and incredible medium and the more you use and work with it the more you realise how incredible it is and how odd it can behave. Our state of sanity and perception is so narrow and fragile, it's easily fooled as we have such a "civilised" mindset and when confronted directly by the oddities of nature we're like frightened children, scared of the boogeyman, the key is to hold your nerve and force yourself to stay rational and the truth will reveal itself quite quickly.

Giant footprints were also seen in the marsh about this time and two bears were found in the the River Lea. Wasn't the mid to late 70s the time when having exotic/dangerous animals were banned in the UK. My thoughts would be that a fairly local owner of such animals, decided to kill them and dumped their bodies and you stumbled upon them?
I live mid Wales. 100s of sheep are often taken from enclosed fields with locked gates. No breaks or disturbances to the hedges or padlocks, no vehicle tracks or footprints. CCTV on nearby properties results in no leads. No arrests. They are being taken by something non-human.
