Even though we all know it, they want to be known for the politically correct things - "TunnelBear, the gorgeous VPN app that wants to bring online privacy to everyone." or "TunnelBear is an elegant, easy mobile VPN that keeps you safe." NOT this is a great way around things certain companies/governments don't want you to be able too..

It’s so frustrating that when some people from Italy move to USA and they get a NTSC DVD, Italian isn’t an option on NTSC usually, and I feel bad for them because they deal with Region locking
Exactly. I might be an odd one out, but sometimes I like watching films originally made in English that have been dubbed into another language. And NTSC NA DVDs are usually stuck with 1, 2 or 3 language tracks that consist of either English, Canadian French and/or Spanish. I've come across some DVDs that only offer English, some that offer only English and Spanish or English and French and some that have all 3, but a majority include all 3. I've come across at least 2 different North American BluRays that have multiple language tracks, and those are We're Back A Dinosaur's Story and I believe an early release of the first Harry Potter movie, I may have seen later releases only include English, Spanish and French but don't quote me on that.
there is no region locking on 4k blu-rays, plus it's to stop something that isn't meant to be available in your country from being played on your hardware.
It's old hat marketing that was the best profitable practise for decades and is now outdated and obsolete. In the 70s, 80s, 90s if a movie is designed to be a big summer blockbuster, they will release it in summer in each location to maximise on box office sales. Since VHS/DVD sales would follow box office release less than a year later, this could result in the VHS release in one country being earlier than the box office release in another market. It's what they did for decades and it worked. The film and music industries are so adverse to the reality that is new technology, so instead of figure out an alternative, they will continue to enforce copyright claims on content, harass uploaders, refuse to sell to otther countries, in an attempt to keep their old structure running. Then when the later release in another country is a total flop (because everyone's already seen it) they will blame piracy, not their outdated, unrealistic and silly business model that relies on the internet not existing, on their lack of profits.
Two reasons. 1: Capital gains. Because if you freely distribute it world wide, it can be harder to track the market. So having divisions and regions is one way to do it. 2: Censorship. Interms of what movies is approved for certain regions or not.
In my opinion, Indian DVDs & Blu-ray discs (not talking about pirated ones) have usually never had any region locking issues; DVDs are usually either region-free or combine several codes (usually Regions 1, 2, 4 and 5), along with being NTSC or PAL. This is probably due to the ubiquitous Indian diaspora around the world; hence in order to cater to them, home media from their native country is made easily accessible abroad. However, since a lot of North American home media is region-locked, the vice-versa does not generally work in India.
It started in the US with US companies getting less taxes on exports that are not sold in the US. I like movies from English speaking countries, because I speak English, but it gets in the way of being able to play those movies, unless I only get DVDs and play them on Linux. Then regional locking doesn't apply.
Angry at region locking since I stepped on the rakes twice now. Bought a phone in a local store and gave it to a cousin who lives in another region. It didn't work when he came to his homeland. He took it to original Samsung centre which charged 50 euros just to take the region lock off. The second time, bought a smartphone to my brother and sent it to his region. Guess what... The seller doesn't provide any warranty despite that a full price was paid with no tie to any single carrier. My question to whoever invented the region lock is, can this be taken down for smartphones? Enraged by this.
How to win friends and influence people is actually a fantastic book! It teaches you how interactions with other people can be improved through various means and methods. @@denelson83 That's fucking bullshit! This is why I fucking do not like Western companies, more concerned with lobbyists rather than making good fucking products and services. @@MaoRatto They are most concerned with making as much money as possible. Everything a big corporation does is entirely in the pursuit of that one goal.
On my ANCIENT DVD/Audio System combo, it has 3 region-lock globes on the top, with the numbers 1,2, and 3. I'd assume this means it can play DVDs from those 3 regions?
Companies don't want my money I guess. This makes it hard to be a movie collector. Piracy isn't enough. I just get to see the movie that way but its lame. Region locking is so stupid.
Yes you are so right 👍🏻 like Paul Hogan said, what's the matter with you dopey 🗽. number 1 was for the money, & number 2 just got dumped from a guy who jumped out the window and Paul Hogan said I haven't got all day would you hurry up then. Couldn't agree with u more about region lock rights reserved privacy terms, even when skippy's got a shotgun, 😂 for shooting shooters I guess they need a licence for that to pretty illegal that Skippy. Co's u got to have rights for a firearm 😂 In Skippy's Situation🤣, now I see where they got the idea for Def Leppard shoot shotgun🇺🇸🌎 😂🤣.
Tiktok seems to have some formal region locking. Sometimes I'll come across a video with no sound and if you click on the audio button of the video it will say sound not available in your country. However if that content creator has video saving enabled if you save the video to your phone you will get the original audio.
Both points don't make sense. If there are technological barriers, then by all means, put region labels on devices, but don't go out of the way to stop people from watching movies. As for copyright, for one, wouldn't I need to buy the movie/game in the region it was released, thus ensuring the makers get their cuts? And if I am unable to view the movie legally, isn't that MORE of a reason to pirate it?

Hi, I have a Playstation 4 from Hong Kong ... when I want to create a PSN account, it just lets me create in Chinese ... I know it's a region block but how can I solve this problem? Thank you
Make a fake Google account somewhere in America then create a PlayStation account this should solve your problem if it doesn't work then I don't know how to fix it Google it I bring it to the black market in Hk
I recall there being a region 7 and a region 8 when I read the wiki article several years back. One of them had to deal exclusively with airlines/cruiseships
so confident with the position of everything. Remember when the subscribe and description was on ->>> that side. I bet youtube will change that again just to screw with people. 5:28
I remember I once had a DVD from Region 2 (Europe, I believe...), and while Windows Media Player gave me the runaround at the time with that ever so joyful prompt to change the disk drive region, I found that I could play the DVD with VLC without any issues and without changing the drive region...
If you buy DVD or Bluray from country you're in, it's no problem. The best way to get around it, if it is a problem, is to use a non well known brand player. As they are all-zone players. The chips in these are all-zoned and at the start, player buttons were pushed to select a certain zone.
what l did was buy a rom 1 drive whice is always reigon unlocked and took its firmware chip and soldered it to my rom 2 in front of the main chip which changes the main chip to be the rom 2 chip and the orignal chip being the secondary and POOF youve got a reigon unlocked bluray drive
I purchased a DVD boxset some years back (can't remember what) and was initially disappointed when I discovered it was region locked. But after some research I found a couple websites claiming many DVD players had the ability to change the region with a certain input of button presses on the remote. I know, bullsh?t.....but what could it hurt? After looking up my DVD player model and punching in the code provided, an extremely plain menu popped up that had a list of regions to pick from and the option to select all (that's what I chose). I was able to unlock both of our DVD players plus a portable one, and even a couple friend's DVD players as well. Does anyone remember doing this?
I think it's more like: We big companies would rather not allow you to have our content than let you buy it and give money to a pocket that's not ours. PS: this comment is underrated.
Cool fact - DVD drives are firmware region locked, while BluRay drives are software region locked. (Probably something that should have been mentioned in the video) What this means is that Computer Blu-ray drives can have their region reset as many times as you want (They have a limit, but it's generally as simple as deleting a file to reset the change limit) While DVD drives on the otherhand either need a media player to bypass the region lock, or a modded firmware flashed to the drive. As when you reach the region swap limit, the firmware locks, and it's impossible to reset it.
Region locking can sometimes backfire when a person's DVD player came from abroad. My first DVD player was a U.S. model PS2 system which is R1 but I'm from the Philippines where most original DVD are R3 and won't work forcing me to buy pirated DVD movies because I have no choice. When DVD format was new a stand alone DVD player was more expensive than a PS2 system that using a PS2 system as a DVD player was not uncommon.
Don't know what date this Vid was uploaded BUT I've been using Region FREE bluray player for about 2 1/2 years. Here in Australia I can view "Hard to find " bluray and DVD's titles available mostly from the U.S which is great.
I can watch a region locked DVD on my computer. He is right about the DVD player being region locked. I found this out when I got region free software for my Windoze computer, and the player came up with the region selection, just like Linus said. I went to Linux for many reasons other than watching DVDs, but region locking is not an issue on Linux. DVDs were region locked because the taxes on export are lower if the item is not sold in the US. Region locking makes the item different enough to get around the tax law. There maybe other reasons now, but this is how it got started.
Another reason for this is different age restrictions in different countries. Germany for example has VERY strict rules on gore and what not, and movies are sometimes released in cut versions here. "No problem, I'll just watch the original from America!"? - No, you won't. You might try the British one though...
Was hoping on a more detailed description of how the region locking works I.e. The byte at the end of the disc that has the ones and zeros denoting the region, that and iirc region 7 is used for travel entertainment (cruise ships and planes)
I have a question. How is the region lock handled on a PC? Can I use a second Blu-Ray drive with a different region setting than the first one? Or is it handled by Windows and all my drives are allways the same Region? I'm a bit of a movie collector.
Wow the video was released after I messed up with region lock stuff. Finally a video to answer my questions in a nice shell. I was always agisnt such thging when I learned that even with this methods people still exploit different markets to seel stuff they aren't allowed to. Funny I always considered NTSC inferior to PAL-M
Here in Scotland we use PAL, of I bought a NTSC Panasonic camcorder from the USA, would it work on my modern Samsung Tv, is PAL and NTSC still relivent today.

So instead of competing, they increase the bar to compete to keep competitors out. Rather than doing their damn job by making good content.
I always thought the original creators WANTED a show to be viewable from around the world, but the consumer's government is preventing it.
1:45 My love for you is complete Linus.
Haha, I think Tunnel Bear would have been a good ad spot for this episode.
Amusing that Audible is the advert, i've wanted to listen to so many books that are region locked by them.
Both points don't make sense. If there are technological barriers, then by all means, put region labels on devices, but don't go out of the way to stop people from watching movies. As for copyright, for one, wouldn't I need to buy the movie/game in the region it was released, thus ensuring the makers get their cuts? And if I am unable to view the movie legally, isn't that MORE of a reason to pirate it?
really been enjoying this series, thanks imparting knowledge bro
region locking should end!

There is also region block in Bangladesh

3M: How Does Region Locking Work?
This why modding systems like the 3DS is so useful.
I wasn't paying attention, and I was like, "For once, Linus, I'll listen to your sponsor.
Wait-how long has this been?
when you use vlc media player you don't need to worry about region locking i can watch us dvd's in the eu with it
Clever!
I recall there being a region 7 and a region 8 when I read the wiki article several years back. One of them had to deal exclusively with airlines/cruiseships
lol that makes sense and is also very dumb
Linus fire the sound editor on these videos XD The latest ones all have sound errors ffs :P
so confident with the position of everything. Remember when the subscribe and description was on ->>> that side. I bet youtube will change that again just to screw with people. 5:28
Why a book spot and not one for tunnelbear? It would fit better with the video
Me when something i wanna watch or play is locked in my country : *laughs in piracy*
A Tunnelbear ad would fit better in this video.
I remember I once had a DVD from Region 2 (Europe, I believe...), and while Windows Media Player gave me the runaround at the time with that ever so joyful prompt to change the disk drive region, I found that I could play the DVD with VLC without any issues and without changing the drive region...
I feel a TunnelBear ad incoming :D
WHAT?! AUDIBLE?! WTF?!
Lord "bear" me strength.
nope
That subtle ass hulu at 2:16 😂😂😂
Did anyone notice the Hulu logo in the background at 2:15?
If you buy DVD or Bluray from country you're in, it's no problem. The best way to get around it, if it is a problem, is to use a non well known brand player. As they are all-zone players. The chips in these are all-zoned and at the start, player buttons were pushed to select a certain zone.
This would have been a good ad spot for Tunnel Bear ;3
Very well the best Linus video thus far. I like what you did there. That was very clever.
what l did was buy a rom 1 drive whice is always reigon unlocked and took its firmware chip and soldered it to my rom 2 in front of the main chip which changes the main chip to be the rom 2 chip and the orignal chip being the secondary and POOF youve got a reigon unlocked bluray drive
Basically whole video: We big corporations are so fucking hungry for money you cant buy our cheaper stuff wich is sold in a differend country
I think it's more like: We big companies would rather not allow you to have our content than let you buy it and give money to a pocket that's not ours.
PS: this comment is underrated.
Me: "I relocated to other country and now I can't watch certain movies there."
Content creators: "I missed the part where that's my problem."
You could just unlock your DVD player for every region, that's what I did.
That's the way early non brand players worked. The players buttons were pushed in a sequence to select a particular region.
but why are music cds, audio cassettes, vinyl or all the other audio formats not region coded? early releases, newest - never mattered
I hate how I pay the same as an American customer for my Netflix subscription and only get half the library.
That's why I won't get Netflix.
You know what I have to say about region locking? FUCK THAT SHIT
Soccer? It is FOOTBALL! ;)
Sir Gentleman He's American.
Cut him some slack.
@Nicholas Bonnie Realized it right after commenting.
Unfortunately UA-cam on Android doesn't allow editing comments, so I just left it there.
3:24 for why it exists
Loved the South Park Timecop joke. Doubt many people will get it.
Haha, I noticed it too :D It's the Walmart episode right?
... And I wish them luck with that...
Linus nailed it.
Region locking should be illegal because it's so annoying
1:46 seems like a good place for Linus to be sponsored by TunnelBear
2:22 Notice the name drop for hulu
Lol. Screw hulu
Cool fact - DVD drives are firmware region locked, while BluRay drives are software region locked. (Probably something that should have been mentioned in the video)
What this means is that Computer Blu-ray drives can have their region reset as many times as you want (They have a limit, but it's generally as simple as deleting a file to reset the change limit)
While DVD drives on the otherhand either need a media player to bypass the region lock, or a modded firmware flashed to the drive. As when you reach the region swap limit, the firmware locks, and it's impossible to reset it.

How could he make that mistake when he can CLEARLY see 6 giant numbers next to him
Region locking can sometimes backfire when a person's DVD player came from abroad.
Shots fired at Hulu
Man, seriously? An Audible.com add? And not a Tunnel Bear add?
Such a missed opportunity dude
region locking is anti consumer
Don't know what date this Vid was uploaded BUT I've been using Region FREE bluray player
for about 2 1/2 years. Here in Australia I can view "Hard to find " bluray and DVD's titles available mostly from the U.S which is great.
you can un region lock a dvd player very easily.
it just requires a password
www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks
here is a link to a bunch of the region codes
aaronplayzgamez thank you sir that was helpful
why did i get this as a new upload from techquickie i have already seen this one twice
I have a vpn but region locking has nothing to do whit it 😏
jholotan best yes it does don't be an idiot if your vpn doesn't help with region locking that means your vpn server is in the same area as you
Aks Walia it actually is but that wasn't my point
Aks Walia the joke flew waaaay over your head, didn’t it
I can watch a region locked DVD on my computer.
There maybe other reasons now, but this is how it got started.

i'm thinking of a number between 1 and 200, can you guess which one?
26
69
omg.... it was 26 wasn't it?
Lutyano Alves i can't be bothered to reply to every wrong answer.
Bayrisch Schaf that guess was heavily expected.
Another reason for this is different age restrictions in different countries. Germany for example has VERY strict rules on gore and what not, and movies are sometimes released in cut versions here. "No problem, I'll just watch the original from America!"? - No, you won't. You might try the British one though...
i will explain it in an easy way: Capitalism.
Was hoping on a more detailed description of how the region locking works
I.e. The byte at the end of the disc that has the ones and zeros denoting the region, that and iirc region 7 is used for travel entertainment (cruise ships and planes)
Linus said soccer. Unsubscribed
You can get a multi region DVD player for almost the same price as a regular one. I've had one for years, it's great.
Argh, I'd so make love to Linus. Watching him hurts me so much because he isn't here, in my life, in my bed. ❤️ 😭
It's what we're all secretly thinking, man. It's hard!
Lee Vuitton uhh..
Wow, that got really weird really fast , lol 😂😛
Best ending add so far love it.
First!
Periodic Table Of Videos congrats :)
nope
You can unlock your DVD player with a code for example up down left left etc you just have to look it up
I have a question.
Thought this video was advertised by a VPN company.
Should read that book to influence us better
Here in Scotland we use PAL, of I bought a NTSC Panasonic camcorder from the USA, would it work on my modern Samsung Tv, is PAL and NTSC still relivent today.
