Great!!! I love this song, and this ist the best version, I´ve heard of it. I also like the other songs you´ve covered. I´m looking forward to hear more. I like your interpretions, voice and piano very much. You´ll make it and I believe in you! Go on!!!
Jesus christ....there are two ways to sing this epic song, the gravely heartbroken waits way - and in a way that justifies the sorrow in the lyrics....you hit the 2nd with a prolific way that I will probably never hear again. Unbelievable.
I'm a professional musician and your voice and style of singing is just amazing. I have heard a lot of really good voices in my life, but you are simply great in singing such emotional songs. If I would not live 3000 miles away I would definetely like to do business with you...keep on singing.
nah, it was recorded right there as the video recorder ran though the audio might be a few frames out of sync. the only part that wasn't recorded live is the very last word of the song, which I overdubbed because my too much red wine soaked voice dropped the last note. that's it. the mic is just offscreen, blocked out by the upper part of the letterbox.
Shure KSM27, MobilePre USB, Garageband, Roland Digital Piano -- but it is all MIDI data, so the piano sound in the Steinway that comes with the Orchestral Jam Pack for GB.
I'm barely learning about Tom Waits, and while I'm liking several songs of his, the gravelly voice can be a little bit much for me (I know! sacrilege!) so I went looking for covers and yours is very enjoyable.
thanks. yes, that's me playing....and reading the first lines which i had taped to the wall in front of me because i couldn't remember the order of the dozen or so verses. : ) gotta love mr. waits.
Normally I hate when someone is trying to sing a version of a Tom Waits song... (Like Rod Stewart - God help him he has done a total bad version) But YOU my friend. You sing this song with the passion it deserves. Very WELL done. :-) Keep up the good work. Nice voice you've got. I have heard your version some times now and I must say: You have got talent and a fan in me. Best regards Rasmus Rosengren (DK)
I've got the mike (Shure, something..), Garageband (MacBook) and a Yamaha P120. And I'm pretty sure I've got a MIDI thingie somewhere, but I'm in need of some serious googling before I hook it all up... How can you connect the Shure to the Mac? Is that what the Mobile Pre thing does? Great Waits song, great cover.
Well done Matthew. You put your own signature on a very difficult song. However, I don't think that your voice has the right qualities to deliver some of the harsher images. But this doesn't mean that you ruined the song in any way! If we hadn't have heard the origional, then everyone would be saying what a nice performance it was. People are so resistant to anything different, but I guess anyone who has tried to get a friend into any Tom Waits' music knows that.
awesome cover indeed. What are you using to mic it? looks like a Shotgun mic in the mirror behind you maybe a pop filter but in the Joni Mitchell one you did it just looks like a directional one (apex?) just curious what you're running for gear man.. mics, chords, board, keyboard... cool thanks!
Really glad you have the sense to love this Waits tune. Really sad you didnt have the sense to NOT try to Hall & Oates a funky, gritty, hard drinkin, hard smokin song. Stick to lighter stuff..great voice.
very good version. Nice work getting a bit of an edge into that great voice you have. Always a problem with singing Tom. Try drinking a half litre of whisky and smoking 3 packets of cigarettes. It sometimes helps...
Good job, but you are missing the integrity and feeling of this song. Its somber honesty and brutal depression goes unaccounted for in your performance but I know you are just putting a normal voice and modern touch to it. So that is a good job on that account, but that account only.
BULLSHIT... you sound to fucking happy to sing this song. don't get me wrong, you're voice is fucking amazing, but this song is about a man's world in dismay.
You sing like a boy band member and for this song (which you don't seem to understand) thats not agood thing. There's no sincerity in the emotion you convey and in no way do you sing from the heart. Too fake.
Forget them haters son,you are no Rod Stewart ot Tom Wait. You are Matthew Luke Sandoval and you did it your way. I like it.
In my 60+ years on this earth, that is the best cover I’ve heard! Beautiful!
Nice to see you don't copy Tom Waits vocal style, so many do and it doesn't work. Well done for not falling into that trap.
Love to hear one of my favorite songs ever sung by a completely different kind of voice to the original. Great job.
The best, most honest cover of the song I've ever heard.
Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic job, Matthew. One of my favorite tunes and you covered it beautifully.
i am astonished at this moment listening to you sing Tom'
song with exceptional beauty.
you make the best of times
thank you mls
I've been away from your music for a few wks. My heart is smiling now listening again.
Well done mls
You are a STAR. Such passion!!!!!
Cool. I like different ways to sing a song.
Well done. Brilliant singing.
Great!!! I love this song, and this ist the best version, I´ve heard of it. I also like the other songs you´ve covered. I´m looking forward to hear more. I like your interpretions, voice and piano very much. You´ll make it and I believe in you! Go on!!!
I gave you 5 stars, but you're walking a fine line between cabaret and art. i wanted to pan you but you nailed it so good I couldn't.

And my way, of course ; )))) Good comment here. Yes, I agree, he does a really nice version. I'll check your channel.
Wonderful version!
very nice your voice was made for this style, keep it going brother
A fabulous soporific song. Your voice certainly lends itself well to capturing this sound in a syrupy context..which seems to work very well
A half-hearted back-handed compliment as well as the opportunity to highlight your SAT vocabulary words. Well done Ollie

hehe....such an aussie song... "Waltzing Matilda". Great job!

man this is friggin awesome love your voice and you do this song amazingly thank you for posting this.
I fear I have commented on this performance before...but it grows on you. It seems to be quite different from Mr. Wait's idea, but it is lovely.

Great Waits song, great cover.
I can't hack Tom Waits's voice and am sure glad this version exists. I like it a lot better. One of the most piercingly sad songs ever.
Wow very good!You have a proffesional mic don't you?Your a pro!
This is the complete destruction of a very special song by turning a song of deep trouble and a broken soul in a breath contest.
awesome Thanks for the info.. that's an expensive microphone! neat stuff!
yeah, sometimes i do too.
Nice
I defended you 11 years ago, and I defend you today. The world only needs one Tom Waits. I am happy it also has one Mathew Luke Sandoval.
this seems to be recorded somewhere else

thanks grandma. : )
Very nice cover, kudos!
ps. it would have been nice to see your hands in the shot.

I've always loved this song, though I prefer Rod Stewart's version to Waits'. Yours was beautiful, though. =)
Hmm, you have my approval.
Still, all the same, it'd be best if you sounded sadder.
Four stars to you.
I like the Tori stuff better and your softer voice..
why don't you leave waits' work alone and cover some disney songs instead?
very good version. Nice work getting a bit of an edge into that great voice you have. Always a problem with singing Tom. Try drinking a half litre of whisky and smoking 3 packets of cigarettes. It sometimes helps...
