Of all zones, this one, the end boss is the one that brought me closest to rage quitting. Almost lost my mind so many times over that boss; basically the underwater bit with the jutting spears, while you're running out of breath; the builders of that level were maniacs... that level should require post-game therapy or something.
One of the hardest levels in Sonic games, as the bubble doesn't give Sonic the oxygen he needs to breathe underwater, so many death traps, and the boss is pretty hard to beat as well.
My problem is, I'm not fast enough. Looks like I've almost made it to the end, but I keep drowning. Sad that we don't actually get to blow up Eggy on this zone, tho- I like watching his ship go boom after a boss. 😈

People will call me a liar, but I actually blew up Eggman in this mission, and didn't drown. I've only ever managed it once though. It's very difficult.
Although difficult as kids (back in 1994) my brother and I called these levels "paradise" because of the music and the aesthetic of beautiful lost ruins
After recently discovering "Sink" which is an alternate version of sonic who got caught on one of those chains with the spikes at the end of it and was forcibly dragged to the bottom of the level against his will, now stuck and forced to drown for the rest of eternity as he can't die, this level gives me the creeps man. Very uneasy feeling

labyrinth zone is easy in my opinion same for the boss I’m trash at sonic 1 but labyrinth was so easy for me. Edit: some people are gonna attack I have a chance of that happening for me.
Sonic: My brother Manic always loved that side-scroller game, Tomatopotamus. But Tomatopotamus wasn’t a very good swimmer, and Manic lost a lot of sleep trying to beat that water level. I was completely traumatized by that drowning music… and look at me now. Life imitating art.
I just played through and beat this whole game for the first time last night, and I can say with full confidence: I. Hate. Labyrinth Zone! 😒 especially that boss fight climb in Act 3. Whoever designed these stages is an absolute menace

I sometimes take that route it depends how i feel i wasn't sure what way was quicker or easier at the time.
The lower path also has like no rings at all

My Sister was usually better than me at most games so usually I was watching her get frustrated at Labyrinth Zone because I could never get this far 😅
If this were the 2nd level as seen in prototypes, than this game would've been much more badly recieved

Fun fact.. the last part at 0:30 is even in a another Sega Game called dune Battle of arrakis,in the Credits after you beat the Game.
