    This made me cry.
    I made this trip in 1999 with my late sister.
    Next year I am making the trip again in her memory and obviously will do the trip again in the new train.
    To see the train going through Gstaad which she loved and into Interlaken where we based ourselves for a week while travelling around Switzerland just made my day.
    Thanks

    I rode the Golden Pass recently - twice! - once to Zweisimmen and then a second time only to Montbovon where I changed to the train for Gruyeres, a much more scenic option than the 'normal' route via Palézieux and only 10 minutes longer.
    I think you missed a trick however by not getting, or featuring, a train using the Belle Époque carriages. A step back in time to the, pardon the pun, Golden Age of train travel (if today isn't classified as a new golden age as well), the carriages are absolutely stunning and while not matching the new trainsets in comfort make up for it in spades with character. The Prestige class on the new trains is totally overpriced, especially considering you can't even [currently] ride them all the way to Interlaken.
    The Belle Époque carriages also have the distinction that second class is utterly indistinguishable from first class. I had to check that I hadn't wandered into the wrong section by mistake because I could not tell the difference. Maybe there is a different meal service or something, I don't know, but the interior was exactly the same. Save loads by buying a second class on the Belle Époque and riding in the equivalent of first!
    The trains are also back to running on a hourly schedule. Purchasing e a point-to-point ticket, such as one might if using the half-fare pass, allows the freedom to hop off the train at any station and then grab another one when it comes through.
    I would contend that the Rochers-de-Naye railway, also leaving/arrving Montreux, is more spectacular than the Golden Pass. Being a cog railway it reaches high altitudes very quickly: 45 minutes after leaving Montreux you are at 2000 metres with stunning views over the Bernese Alps to the Eiger and Jungfrau. A must-do if in the area.

    Very fine report!
    (Note: the cars are from Stadler, but the bogies from Alstom).
    I was fascinated to watch the bogies being slowly widened or narrowed in Zweisimmen - a matter of 2 minutes.
    The whole technology is very new, and not all the trains have been delivered yet.
    The BLS not only fears damage to its switches - such damage has already occurred. Hence the resort to changing trains at Zweisimmen.
    In addition to the new "gpx", MOB runs most long-distance connections between Montreux and Zweisimmen with various special trains: Panoramic, Belle Epoque (in the Art Nouveau retro look) - and this without any surcharge! These trains are marked in the timetable.

      As I hike in this region every now and then, I‘ve already taken all sorts of trains - including, as a child, the old 3000series from the 1940s which needed two locos for long through trains. (This train is still depicted at a wall at Montreux station.) Aditionally trains pulled by the brawny 1930s double locomotive and the powerful and racy double railcar from the 1960s (or 1970s?).
      To say nothing of the steam loco journey from Zweisimmen to Chamby: They had to bring back the loco and wagons after steam days in the Simme valley - and I happened to be there exactly in the right moment 😁😁. My eyes are still half blind from the smoke in the tunnels…

    A review of the spectacular BLS line (Bern -) Neuchâtel - La Chaux-de-Fonds would be cool for several reasons: The great views, the MIKA trains also run on that line, the unique stop with direction change at Chambrelien, the line will get replaced with a more direct line mostly through tunnels (unsurprisingly called "Ligne direct"). Possibly the journey can be connected with the Le Locle-Les Brenets line that will be replaced by a guided bus or the CJ line to Glovelier (with the perfect timetable synchronisation at Le Noirmont thanks to a long stop of the branch to Glovelier at Saignelégier).

      You have to be careful with polarising filters. They only work at certain angles to the sun and glass, and certain types of window (with multiple layers) can cause a rainbow effect. They can be useful, but they can also completely ruin your shots if you're not aware of this.

    BLS is not refusing to allow the GPEx to use their track "out of fear it causes damage to the track", BLS banned the use of the train after 2 months of use, during which time the train was causing damage to track. MOB spent CHF 63m on a gauge-changing train which it can now only use on its own track.

    You’ve now done 1 of the three big panoramic trains of Switzerland. Where are the Glacier Express and Bernini Express? Great job though, just missing the lead carriages they used to have where you sat in front of the driver for that service.

    As a frequent resident on this train for hiking and snowboarding trips, I find it laughable to pay for that "presitge" 128 CHF, while a normal 2nd class ticket with halffare discount pass on the exactly same train costs 26.5 CHF; the difference in comfort is nowhere to justify it. I almsot always see prestige car empty, unless, of course, some ego-hurt people want to show off ;) It's definitely not worth it for a local and even for a normal tourist. You can even get yourself that croissant, juice and a coffee for some chf 8-10 and imagine that you've been "pampered", lol.

    The GPX was refused by the end of febuary by BLS beacause they noticed abnormal wear and tear on the tracks, mainly on the switches. Investigations are still in progress. During test runs no abnormal wheel spacing could be detected. On the MOB tracks the train is still running, but they noticed the problem too. I heard that the train is currently allowed to drive only 20 kph over switches.
    Currently they're talking about a renewed introduction in October, but from my experience and reviewing the progress they've made... i guess next timetable change seems more realistic.
    However, this is not the first time that BLS has been unsure about this train. Shortly after the train was introduced, it was only allowed to run at max. 80 kph because they had uncertainties with the brake type.

      Very unusual indeed. Hope things work out else it will be a shame if the train has to run under restricted conditions or will have to be modified.

    The real reason for the delay in running through onto BLS was the problem with the sliding bogie technology (ala Spanish Talgo style). Also, I was disappointed to note that the Prestige seats do not exactly line up with the windows, so your seat only had about 2/3rd's of a window to see out of.

    • @richard-riku

      prestige class and they cannot get the seats to line up with the windows!! something else the japanese routinely get right even on regular trains.

    • @dziltener
      @dziltener Рік тому +5

      The seats are lined up with the windows. The reason why the window starts "behind" the seat is because the seats can be rotated the other way around and then this way will still align with the window.

    • @harri2626
      @harri2626 Рік тому

      @@dziltener So in other words, it's pure luck whether you have a full window depending on whether the seat has been turned? The seats are not lined up with the windows (see 3min 54sec). The only winners are the first 2+1 forward facing seats which have a full window on either side. If the inward facing seats are "reversed" then they will still have the pillars to partially block their view. I suspect the real problem is the depth of the Prestige seat (from front to back) which is too great and a compromise has been reached.

    • @dziltener
      @dziltener Рік тому +5

      @@harri2626 No, ffs... The seat is placed that way so that no matter which way it is turned, you get a full window width's worth of window. That window is also wider than a normal window for exactly this reason.

    Thank you for always delivering wonderful videos.
    I'm really looking forward to seeing it.
    I have one favour to ask.
    It will be a reference when using the toilet, so please take a picture of the scene where the toilet water flows (the flushed water is sucked into the underfloor tank) when visiting the toilet.
    Please.

      Simply, I'm interested in the toilet system of railroad cars, and it's also a reference when I use it myself, so I'd like to see it by all means.
      I will tell you so that there is no misunderstanding, but what I want to see is the scene where clean water flows before using the toilet.

    Albs, I've travelled on the Golden Pass a decade ago in literally golden color carriages from Lucerne to Montreux. Is the GP express different? I found the route not exactly the same. Also one annoying thing about the panoramic windows is that it gets very hot during summer. I had to wear a hat to prevent myself getting sun burnt!
