Cracking down on traveling is a great start. It'll make the game more athletic again. No more just having big or powerful guys run through the key. No more ridiculous 3 point fade aways. They also need to stop players from scooping the ball with their hands instead of dribbling.
I’ve been complaining about this for years. They should call this by the book. It’s what makes basketball a great game! Also it’s good to see them calling people for faking like they were fouled.
It's not because I'm old, Has nothing to do with it honestly. It's just become a joke to where the rules hardly MATTER very much anymore. If all of these can become grey area, and completely across the board as to whether they're called or not, it's only gonna continue in the same direction. That, and the league living and dying by the 3... I don't watch very much NBA anymore at all. And it's been my favorite sport all my life...
When I was playing BB 50 years ago, traveling was how everybody dribble today. You coin't transport the ball for control. LOL. Rules did change a lot and interpretations too
The Harden step back in this video clip is an obvious enough travel it should be called every time. If it’s easily seen from the crowd, then you gotta call it. He calls it a double step back, and the key is not ‘gathering’ until the first step back is done (or ideally simultaneously with last step) but in that clip he clearly gathered before the end of the first step back. Should be called every time
Watch a game from the sixties or 70's. They called it all the time. NBA needs to tighten it up, but these moves have become part of the game. It enables exciting plays. If the refs called the carry as written, the refs would run out of breath blowing their whistles so much. Reign it in a bit, but don't go by the book. Or change the rules.
What’s so difficult about defining what a travel violation is????……..we learn this crap as kids playing in the streets…….. You travel when you take more than two steps without a dribble, pass, or shot……
Its really FUNNY! Now all of a sudden, they want to put the dog back behind the gated fence AFTER RUNNING WILD ALL OF THIS TIME! The EURO step should be OUTLAWED! I t has made the game"in my humble opinion quite sloppy! Its sad that of all of a sudden, its now being called. Its been going on for 15 yrs at least and I think James Harden really benefitted the MOST! If they decided to subtract the the amount of times he used the EURO step, they could deduct at least 10,000 points from his scoring record! What a time to start to make the call; you have a generation and a half thats been Euro stepping! WHY NOW! What a time to now start using the whip..... JUST SAY'IN.....
I’ve been a Warriors fan since the late Sixties. Curry is one of my favorite players to watch because the joy he obviously plays the game with. However, you have a very valid point that needs to be discussed. Outstanding video, Basketball Fan! Thank you.
Theres going to be growing pains but ultimately it will be good for the league. IMO its 2 steps and a pivot from the last dribble, or 1 step and a pivot from the catch. Problem is the "gather step" has become like 2-3 steps so ppl like harden can get from the paint to the 3pt line without putting the ball on the floor.
its easy to define carrying too keep your middle finger above the diameter of the ball. Although its probably unnecessary to enforce if you call travel for taking 3 steps between dribbles.
Waiting till someone runs with the ball between both hands coast to coast and no traveling called. Makes the game unwatchable, not basketball any more.
The only time I watched an NBA game in person, a few years ago, is when every time they handed the ball off to another player, it looked like a travel. It seemed like almost every time someone began dribibbing, it was beginning with a travel. I don't know what happened but I thought we were supposed to release the ball from our hands before lifting our pivot foot to dribble the ball.
It is about time they enforce it. It is ridiculous. Play by the rules or don't play. Get rid of the three point play and the loose ball foul while you're at it. The rules are the rules, you don't like them find another game.
A gather step is a step you take simultaneous to a catch, its not a travel but when you take 2 or 3 steps after the gather and dribble it is a travel, now if you take 2 such as on a fastbreak and don't dribble its not a travel.
Against Boston it was a travel for slightly lifting his left foot (pivot). In my point of view it is ok to not call this as hard to see if lifted at all and he gains no advantage (except maybe for aligning the feet for shooting). The other example of the one called against Curry is clearly a travel (left foot is his pivot and he lifts it and sets it back down) and he clearly also gains an advantage out of it by moving back right to avoid the contest.
I'm not a basketball fan but understand the basic rules. Can someone explain to me the basic definition of travelling, and theoretically what constitutes a step Vs gather step and such? Thanks anyone
If a WR for the Rams made a spectacular catch in the End Zone with 1 foot clearly OB the NFL sez - Sorry we have rules & that's incomplete. The NBA would say - that's an entertaining play for a Big Market team ... TOUCHDOWN !!
NBA doesn't seem to call on travels because a lot of superstars do it. If they crackdown on it, Curry, LeBron, and other superstars probably would react a LOT 🤣
And guess what, its even worse this season lol. The anba dont care,t hey se people like the flashy plays so they allow it, even if its killing basketball
I agree with you. I think they'll always be questionable calls or no calls, but all this extra added on stuff just makes the game unwatchable at times. Allowing all these extra steps literally has many people thinking traveling simply doesn't exist anymore. I've seen guys take like 5 or 6 steps and watched people defend it to the death. The NBA created this mess by allowing it to grow further out of control year after year. Now they are finally starting to do something about it and now the other side is crying all the time. It'll definitely be interesting to see how the rest of the year goes.
They're doing this to make the game more watchable, Fuk that, they've become the new WWF, Entertainment instead of a Game. why so many defensive new rules, cause ain't no one want to watch a game where the score is 80-90 they want the 120-130 games that's why it's the softest Era ever...
I stopped watching. Traveling and carrying are all part of the game now. It’s never going back. Kids coming up now don’t even know how to dribble without carrying.
Larry, are you blind! Curry was call for travel in MAVS vs GSW game not because of that step back but because after step back Curry put first left foot on the floor then right and then moved left foot again! Simple call!
when he steps back and lands on the left foot first he establishes the left foot as his pivot foot then changes his pivot foot to the right... agree to disagree. left foot then right then left 3 steps... actually not even sure what you're disagreeing with
The last Curry video is a blatan travel, shoting position was established and he changed pivots, lifted both feet of the ground. That was good defense, and the outcome of the dribble was "unconfortable shot with high possibility of block", and he cheated that by traveling. In that position you either shoot or protect and pass the ball. That is why Basketball is attractive!
Can't watch any basketball anymore...Pro or college...it's disgusting. All the walking and palming...I can't even get through an ESPN highlight segment without turning it off since nearly every play involves some violation or another. The Pros can keep their game but this long time fan is done with them. College level skills are weaker than previous years. Sure, there are great athletes but I don't see the skill level and innate basketball sense that comes with years of practice and play...and yep, Steph traveled...
Jordan would carry, travel on the baseline John Stockton would carry the ball Allen iverson carry king Traveling and carrying been going on since 90s 2000s present the stars would definitely get away with carrying and traveling like Lebron Kobe etc it’s gone diluted for the past 30 years the nba should enforce it to make it fair for the defense ! Offense has too many advantages nba was desperate for higher ppg the future and now don’t look good if they don’t enforce the rule !!!!!!!
What’s funny is if you go back and watch Jordan highlights he hardly ever actually traveled. His moves were just new. But also, the rules have changed, the “gather step” wasn’t a written rule at the time.
@@PhantomofDB and the gather step is a dumb rule added in 2009 where the player has to have both hands on the ball and is allowed 2 more steps the dumb part is nba is allowing for the player to take a 3rd or even 4 steps after a dribble since he has to gather a ball 😭😂😂😂 that’s plain o dumb and simply a travel 90 percent of the time 🔥
Well while pivot foot switching is by technicality a travel. I like to see it as it’s own thing as it is more sneaky and different from a blatant travel within a layup sequence. Pivot foot switching is one of the hardest things to see because our eyes are not focused on the feet. A really crafty player can do an incredible job at hiding a pivot foot switch. We all love Kobe but people may not realize how much he pivot foot swapped in rhythm. Kobe was an incredibly skilled above average athlete already, and then on top of that he would murder defenders with pivot swaps. Not every play of course, but still constantly throughout games. Any hooper here knows that a fast player with a well timed pivot swap 100% creates more space, better angles, and is damn near impossible to top. Iconic Kobe is getting the pass into ISO often starting with the back to the defender. Kobe was a master of footwork, so masterful in fact he would punk the refs, defender, and fans often. He would sneak it in perfect rhythm catching the ball positioning into an established pivot and shoulder faking simultaneously. All the while he would very quickly actually change pivot feet and go. Not only would he pull a defender one direction with incredible body fakes but he is doing it with that pivot. Now the defender doesn’t just have to come back but he has to make up the extra space and distance Kobe would get when he swapped his pivot foot. Don’t believe me? Watch some games and slow it down a bit :)
Saw a play with a team down 2 with a few seconds togo. They got a 4 on 1 break to tie the game . All 4 players stopped at the 3-pt line . I wish that was more surprising. You get whatever you're willing to tolerate.

This is a main reason why you can’t compare this new nba to the real nba greats from the past
When I was playing BB 50 years ago, traveling was how everybody dribble today. You coin't transport the ball for control. LOL. Rules did change a lot and interpretations too
They say the league was weak back then try attempting a crossover with just the hand being only allowed on the top of the ball no kuffing
they should try their best to call this, it's very advantageous for the offense.
Gather step is traveling.

I watched those games, they were much better and more exciting than watching two teams run up and down the court chucking threes.

You actually sort of get two, a pivot and a step release of that pivot to start dribbling
