I usually edit through out my writing process. Like I go back and reread what I've written several times and edit as I go back everytime. And I also had an editor do each chapter as I finished one and I'd go over it again....
Something I’d like to add about comparison: it actually helps a little if you get yourself into the mindset of: “if I had written this story, I’d have done this”. You look at any book even your absolute favorites or the big name famous authors and you notice little things (or sometimes huge problems). Maybe inconsistencies in the writing, maybe an outdated writing style, maybe a poor fact check, maybe something that goes against your own personal bias. Noticing major mistakes or little details like that in another’s writing style you start to see the writer less of a god on an unobtainable pedestal you can’t hope to reach and more of a fellow human being who sometimes makes mistakes but still made it in the industry. It really takes a lot of the pressure off you and makes the dream feel more achievable. You can also look to those writers as a teacher to you, asking questions such as: What did I like about this story? What didn’t work for me about it? What can I learn from this author? How do I avoid the same mistakes this author made? Questions like that. That’s at least how I feel about it. Personal opinion take it or leave it.
Self editing has always been my favorite part of the process. EVERYTHING can be fixed after I step away and let my work "stew" for a few weeks or months. If my page isn't absolutely covered in red marks then it feels like I haven't done enough! 😄

I have a very important and timely question about editing. I love writing. But sometimes I miss mistakes and find sentences that could be improved. I was wondering what authors and publishers in general think about using AI for editing. I don't mean using AI to generate text. But to polish the text to get a reasonable first draft. To find things you can't see yourself. Because, yes, I love my book the way I wrote it, and I am blind to some mistakes. Is it OK to use AI to get suggestions on how to improve a text?
That's what I love about working in a library. Everybody is automatically like, hey what are you writing, hey how far you are, hey can I edit it? And I'm just like, yeah LOL

"Don't compare where you don't compete." legit I think I found a new saying to get me through life cos' I'm so friggan bad about comparing myself to people that have had way more time than me to do something. Started a new job in September, turns out I'm pretty darn good at being a cashier cos' I tick a few boxes (hospitality, tone, and memory) that tends to make up for where I lack. My co-workers continuously tell me that my personality and methods are exactly what the store need. But, when I get put into a situation I'm not used to- I become a pygmy-Icarus and start comparing myself to others. Get told they want me to think about training to be a supervisor, "Well I'm not as good as (Insert Name) so I clearly am the knock-off version.", they try to compare me to someone else in a positive light, "Well I'm a downgrade because of *these* reasons.", and my favorite- I'm asked if I will try something outside of my comfort zone, "I'm now going to point out my short comings and be a little bitch about everything." I know this is a video about writing- but for real... Jenna gives good life advice on top of great writing advice.

my 2nd draft still sucks - but it sucks slightly less, so there's hope! 10% of the chonker word count is gone. my best tool is my own voice - i read aloud to myself, and it picks up awkward phrasing that i always skip over in my head.
I am good at fixing things. Not the best story teller but I really have some storys I want to put out there so I get frustrated while writing. Fixing it afterwards, for me, it feels more like finaly being able to do thing right.
I WISH I had kept all my ancient dusty parchment of stories written in school. I once was credited for writing a short story that the teacher opined was at at least an 8th grade level, in 7th grade. First time I got a hopefully genuine applause from the class, other than after presenting projects and other tediums. It was a special moment :3
I’ve been struggling with my edit for two years, I’m so embarrassed and I’ve reached the point where it feels easier to plot and write an entire new 89k novel just so I can avoid editing the last one! Jokes aside, thanks for the kick up the behind this video delivered. I've been holding off editing way, wa----y too long!
I usually edit through out my writing process. Like I go back and reread what I've written several times and edit as I go back everytime. And I also had an editor do each chapter as I finished one and I'd go over it again....
I love editing!!!
*That dog is me on every occasion*
4:24 That’s rough buddy
Please please please more video about the finance side jenna
Self editing has always been my favorite part of the process. EVERYTHING can be fixed after I step away and let my work "stew" for a few weeks or months. If my page isn't absolutely covered in red marks then it feels like I haven't done enough! 😄
I feel like I’ve been watching Jenna’s videos for so long that I know exactly the way she talks. I KNEW she was gonna say that rough drafts are a pile of shit, I just thought steaming would’ve been in front of it 🤣
Thanks for the videos. A bit of topic but what breed is Butters?
Looks like some kind chihuahua mix
@@gracequach6769 I was thinking that too. Reminds me of my uncle's chihuahua-mix, Tinker. Except Butters is cute cute whereas Tinker is that kinda "ugly cute" thing.
Look at our little BUTTERnut Squash. The cuteness overload is killing me.
I like editing cause u can change part add part and more it’s fun
Pizza Jenna! She's a slice of all right!
And I'm just like, yeah LOL
my god, butters is so adorable.
4:42 But Jenna, I'm twenty years past puberty and I'm STILL not finished adulting yet!
*quietly watches with my very-much-already-edited draft sitting open in the background, sipping supposedly calming tea out of my "But Jenna" mug* Well crap
Thank you talking pizza! You've been most helpful!
YES ILY JENNA ❣️
This might be random. But I know you track quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily tasks. Are there any apps you use or recommend. I've been out of the game a while, due to training for work. And have been binge watching your videos and some others trying to get back to my book baby. It's hard af.
Get told they want me to think about training to be a supervisor, "Well I'm not as good as (Insert Name) so I clearly am the knock-off version.", they try to compare me to someone else in a positive light, "Well I'm a downgrade because of *these* reasons.", and my favorite- I'm asked if I will try something outside of my comfort zone, "I'm now going to point out my short comings and be a little bitch about everything."
I know this is a video about writing- but for real... Jenna gives good life advice on top of great writing advice.
yes sorry, I know Im late to the party but I finished reading TSC yesterday and oh my God I ship them SO.HARD. asdhfjdk
Was it really good?
Stephen King is one of the olden gods and what we should aspire to be but we must remember that we are not yet at the point of Stephen King's level of immortality and are therefore allowed to grow
my 2nd draft still sucks - but it sucks slightly less, so there's hope! 10% of the chonker word count is gone. my best tool is my own voice - i read aloud to myself, and it picks up awkward phrasing that i always skip over in my head.
Your videos are soo helpful
Curt Hinnig could have done it all in the first draft. In fact you could say it would have been perfect!
I might treat myself to pro-writing aid to see if it’ll help direct me a little, or at least get me started
