I don't think you'd have worse results with the por-15 on those tanks as you would with the powder coating. The key with it is the condition of the metal when you apply it. It works the best on rusty "seasoned" metal. The less prep you do, the better it seals/ adheres. Its usually the opposite with conventional enamels but the por-15 'sticks' better the rustier it is. I've used it for over 20 years on chassis' of cars and I've rarely seen it just flake off. I admire your kindness, helping out a friend in a time of need. You're a good dude J.C. digging this dump truck buddy. You're a lot like me. You don't believe in doing things unless it's done right, and to your standards. I wish more people felt the same way and not just booger stuff together just to get it done/ out the door. Take care and keep up the good content!! 👍👍
Great to have you back with us. I would never have believed that powder coating if you hadn't shown it to us that its truly amazing and ridiculous. As I understand it to keep a vehicle in showroom condition that you are not going to use it would be great, otherwise leave well alone, well what a waste of time. This dump truck is certainly wearing you all out with it's problems and is being a long slow and expensive project, sure hope's it's worth it
i am ready to be finished with this truck. there are more problems now. if i wasnt getting close to setting the bed back on...i would move it out of the way and work on something else. i do need this truck now. the expenses just keep climbing...at least it will be right when i am done. if it can do the 4 projects completed before winter, it will be well worth it.
Down here we wouldn't touch that truck. There are so many solid ones here, the value would be low for sure! I honestly feel sorry for anyone that has to work on rusty trucks, but I have no doubt it will be a good truck when your done.
i would normally not bother with this truck but the truck i bought to swap my bed onto is out on load to a friend in a rough spot. if it comes out half as nice as i think it will....i will be ok with it.
JC you do what you got to do Family Come First UA-cam Comes Second we all understand but keep up the great work, I agree with you about powder coating looks good new but soon deteriorates and looks bad so much rather be without. We also suffer here in the UK with the dreaded rust so have a understanding thanks mark
Hey J.C. !! Good to see you got a leg up on the build. That powder coat is rude, not a fan of that finish on anything that's used in the real world. The air tank situation is ugly as well but, you will persevere and do the right thing to ensure the truck is safe... Be well my friend, work safe, talk again soon !!
powder coating is a great in theory but doesnt work in my reality. i really wanted to get some aluminum air tanks to replace these ones with but i have yet to find them.
it is a diamond in the rough...time and pressure makes a diamond....i have a lot of time and pressure invested in this old truck so it should be ok when i am done.
Ha do what you can life happens and we do the best possible. As for parts problems that everywhere unfortunately you're getting there, unless it's costing you alot for the truck being down , unexpected things always seem to happen.
thanks james. i do want it the best it can be even if if is an old rusty truck. i try to do things so i dont have to go back. it is hard enough to make the time to do it in the first place.
I like your plan for the rear plate and pintle hitch mount. It's cool that you can be proud of your son's welding skills. Does he MIG or stick it? Seeing all that rust damage makes me happy to live in the northwest.
it should make for a good strong hitch. i have no problem acknowledging someone when they can do things very well or better than i can. he mostly does mig. this truck is one of the worst ones i have seen in quite some time. the average truck of this age doesnt look like this. this was suppose to be a parts truck.
I wouldn't worry about the fuel pump ,pumping diesel, gasoline that's a different matter. the problem with patching air tanks is that you are restraining weak metal. kind of like black powder. take a given amount unpacked, it will flame up and burn. pack it, and you have an explosion. the road salts they use now are so corrosive, it's amazing anything holds up. thing is that it attacks aluminum and wiring as well as steel. I would be interested to see how the late model Ford pickups with the aluminum body parts will hold up.
i am not worried about that pump. besides if it was going to explode if it isnt in gasoline.....you better never run out of gas. i would like to replace the tanks with aluminum tanks but i have had no luck finding any. who knows...i may still find some.
ford has been using aluminum for body panels on several models for many years. the rear gate on our navigator is aluminum. the metal is holding up ok but the paint is not holding.....it looks just like that powder coating.
patching air tanks isnt a good thing in my opinion. lots of things can go wrong. lots of trailer air tanks that can be adapted pretty easy, especially since you need to shorten most lines anyway. most tanks are in the 50-75$ range and should have plenty of capacity. crazy with that powdercoat, looked like a vinyl wrap gone wrong. I like to use rubberized undercoating between surfaces when possible. it almost makes a glue like bond which keeps the moisture and salt out. nothing seems to work out the way it should, so don't feel alone. hopefully the rest goes smoothly.
patching the air tank isnt my preference but it will have to do unless i find some tanks. i used to be able to buy "seconds" aluminum tanks from a local manufacturer but that stopped doing that. i absolutely hate powder coating. the battery box, fuel tanks, mounting brackets and air tanks had powder coating.
switch to propane, you can use the same regulator and a welding supply store will have the fitting to go from male propane to your acetylene regulator.( O and get a different torch tip) a 20lbs cylinder is 1/4 the cost or more of acetylene and last as long. it does cut a little different, but it gets the job dun.
Hey love the video i have the same D shape diesel tank im having the same problems the powder coat is peeling is there anything i can do to prevent more rust ? It also leaking a little ?
That rust , I thought we had it bad with our salt air and sea spray on Kodiak Island . I grew up seeing vehicles rust out in just a few years. Body and floor pans. not frames, wow, ours was nothing compared to yours and what Mustie 1 deal with. I enjoy the videos but not the problems one keeps running into . but I guess that's why we watch the videos
this truck is worse than average condition for the year. i have others that had better care and dont look like this. however, if the owner would have pointed the working end of a pressure washer at that truck a few times....it would be a much nicer truck.
seems i use to use the same sorta fuel pump setup you do i used the buick v6 one was a slim pump about 1 1/4 in diameter and powder coating is wan**rs paint i hate it too should be banned causes lots of problems in machinery and vehicals.. keep up the great work
i put that larger diameter pump on it as the last one (probably the same size you are using) was much smaller. however, i used it to pump some antifreeze out of a drum and i forgot to run something with an oil base through it. so it locked up. i will put another small one back on eventually.
Air tank replacement..... L&H express store has them Grainger supply has some pretty cheap 4 state trucks has some But a lil pricy... Also...NewTruckSpring.com
aluminum seems like it won't hold paint like steel will. I have seen plenty of aluminum fuel tanks that corroded right were the rubber protector is. nothing seems to be safe from road brine .
J.C. IT MUST BE HARD FOR YOU TO PRESENT THE SECOND HAND TRUCKS YOU BUY AND SELL ON IN A GOOD LIGHT WHEN THEY ARE SO BADLY RUSTED, YOU MUST HAVE TO DO A LOT OF EXPLAINING TO BUYERS TO CONVINCE THEM THE VEHICLES HAVE PLENTY OF LIFE LEFT IN THEM. KEEP IT UP LIKE WATCHING.
not really....everyone in my area expects to see a certain level of rust that coincides with the year and use. this was a truck that was in worse condition than most.
Don't you hate it when that paint chips off and you slip with your spanner or ratchet or something and you get the edge of the paint slide under your finger nail! I hate that so bad! Can anyone else relate???
I would not patch air tanks, buy an old used compressor, or patch ANY type of tank. Search UA-cam for " air compressor explosion". You know why you never heard of anyone getting blown up while testing those automotive fuel pumps outside the tank? They went up in a ball of fire when that side of the city block exploded 😳
i have patched air tanks, added fitting to tanks and so on. it would be one thing to use that fuel pump outside off gas but this is diesel fuel. it is far less volatile than gas or gas fumes. i am very confident with how i use that pump.
Ese dinero mal invertido ...piensen q el tiempo o esta para estar celebrando fiestas ...piensen en el futuro la educacion para sus hijos para eso deverian de usar ese dinero

This is such a project that takes more time and oh where I started, strength jc
it takes patience....something i am running short on.
Tough work, I admire what you do
it is aggravating work. i would not have used this truck for the rust but it is what i have available and it is paid for.
JC you do what you got to do Family Come First UA-cam Comes Second we all understand but keep up the great work, I agree with you about powder coating looks good new but soon deteriorates and looks bad so much rather be without. i call powder coating a gentleman's paint...it looks good as long as it never gets used.
Hey J.C. !!

Ha do what you can life happens and we do the best possible. As for parts problems that everywhere unfortunately you're getting there, unless it's costing you alot for the truck being down , unexpected things always seem to happen.
Here in the UK I could get two of those tanks made absolutely from scratch for next to nothing!
it is a shame what those tanks cost. at least they come with all the fittings.
tear down's always quicker than the build & takes a little longer when you want it right so you don't have to go back...looks good to me
thanks james. i do want it the best it can be even if if is an old rusty truck. i try to do things so i dont have to go back. it is hard enough to make the time to do it in the first place.

What do you recommend to coat frames and to stop rust?,i heard you saying por-15 is bad and would be the same as powder coating.
i dont know what is best. many people use a rust converter before they paint. i like to use enamel with a hardener for paint.
patching air tanks isnt a good thing in my opinion. lots of things can go wrong. lots of trailer air tanks that can be adapted pretty easy, especially since you need to shorten most lines anyway. most tanks are in the 50-75$ range and should have plenty of capacity. crazy with that powdercoat, looked like a vinyl wrap gone wrong. just like a snowball rolling downhill
at this point that snow ball looks like a coil of steel!
Just one problem after another
Why does it have so many holes in frame will it pass dot inspection
the holes that are drilled in that frame are from the factory. it passed dot inspection many times.
Hey love the video i have the same D shape diesel tank im having the same problems the powder coat is peeling is there anything i can do to prevent more rust ? It also leaking a little ?
peel all that powder coating off and repaint it. that is what i did on the fuel tank i put on this truck.
J.C. SMITH PROJECTS thanks J.C your the man

right. nothing seems to hold up well against the road salt these day.

Powder coat sucks
J.R. enjoy your videos, maybe a little less explaining, and a lot more wrenching...IMHO. rust is bad, enough said.
Ese dinero mal invertido ...piensen q el tiempo o esta para estar celebrando fiestas ...piensen en el futuro la educacion para sus hijos para eso deverian de usar ese dinero
Powder coating is garbage
Stop buying trucks that a rusty unless you are going to use them for parts and instead of driving them
