Hillclimb Arona - Escalona 2019 - Fausto Bormolini - Reynard F3000

Ciao everyone and, in particular, to the friends of the Canary Islands who last weekend hosted us in Arona for the dispute of the Arona-Escalona hill climb. In the Fito and Falperra races, I had been meeting for some years this nice gentleman who answers the name of Pepe Rodriguez Campos who invited us to participate in his race in October on the island of Tenerife. Finally, this year, we managed to combine the various commitments and set up the truck with four cars. The companions of adventure for this trip were Renzo Napione and Luca Zuurbier who shared the CEM 2019 trips with me, along with an old friend or Lazlo Szasz with his trusted Reynard K02. Thanks to the exquisite hospitality of our friend Pepe and the Community of Arona we were able to enjoy, with our families, a six days of vacation on the beautiful beaches of Tenerife in preparation for the race. The Arona-Escalona, ​​scheduled only on Saturday, however, began on Friday evening in the main square of Arona with the presentation of the cars between two wings of enthusiastic crowd in the light of the reflectors ... Beautiful because everyone, but all the pilots, had their time to show off and show off their car. The cars at the start were about eighty which is an anomalous number for the Canary races and forced the organization to eliminate the free practice session to respect the scheduled times. The cars fleet was of a unique variety with historical cars, clubs, expired homologation, groups N and A, TCR, GT, BRC and similar besides the PA30 with RPE engine ex Christian of Sergio Flebes, very nice pilot of the island of El Hierro. The course is technical, wide, with a perfect bottom and an excellent grip. It is characterized by a first medium / slow part with two straights in the central part and then a series of hairpin bends that looks like a small Bondone and three very challenging final curves. Audience of great occasions; since Friday it was already encamped on the course despite the difficulties of many areas forbidden to the public and of rocks and fig trees that hardly match the vision of the race. The descent after each heat took place in a flood of hot fans and enthusiasts who asked for photos, selfies and handshakes and remained in my memories as well as the applause of all the pilots in the section that leads from the arrival to the park closed. From a sporting point of view it was all very nice. For the first time in my history I came in a favorite race and, I confess, I was not at all calm because the characteristics of the path so slow and driven are not the ones I love most, my companions / opponents Lazlo and Renzo were very aggressive and I did not know the level of the local drivers with the Osella and the BRCs that were well suited to the characteristics of this track. I felt like Simone or Christian who always start with the obligation to win but without having even a tenth of their abilities ......... Instead, since the first ascent, I found a good feeling with the car and I was able to manage a margin of advantage enough on Lazlo and Renzo and I also got an undeserved victory in front of Bob and my daughters Eva and Dana and this is the best prize. This race was an opportunity to round off the season in style in a beautiful place and enjoy the company of Renzo, Lazlo, Luca and Mariana, the guys from the team and, as I said, especially my family. Thanks again to Pepe, the Escuderia Zapatera, the Community of Arona and the fantastic audience that made this wonderful experience possible that I hope to be able to repeat again next year !!
