  • The Pula Amphitheatre-Arena, or the Pula Arena as it is more commonly known, has a rich history of over two millennia showcasing the power of the Roman Empire during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, the same emperor behind the Roman Colosseum.
Initially built for gladiatorial fights, this amphitheatre, the sixth largest in the world, once held over 20,000 people. The purpose of this venue was for entertainment as well as to show the world Roman hegemony and discipline. In addition to gladiator fights, it hosted knight tournaments in the Middle Ages, fairs, cattle herding and even public executions in Mussolini's time, and in recent times it has hosted concerts, events and the Pula Film Festival, the oldest film festival in Croatia today.
Join me on this historical tour as we get to know one of Pula's most impressive architectural masterpieces, its amphitheatre.
