Am gonna be controversial here and say I actually side with the Germans here, these were not officers, they were enlisted men, they didn’t deserve that brutality

Although they have possibly been involved in prior raids on innocent towns, there’s no evidence to support that, and they’re still just grunts who have no say in what they’re able to do. They were needlessly brutalized and for what? Americans will always scream and cry when an atrocity is committed but when American troops scalp dead soldiers just for being a part of the enemy? That’s fine in their eyes. It was hard to watch this as it is.

True but that’s one of the messages of the movie, not all Germans were Nazi’s, the movie takes time to humanize the antagonists, which is why the movie is so great.

It was explained later in the movie that they wear German Uniforms as disguises whenever they wanted to take down patrol groups and such...

Not the reason it’s to humiliate the dead and those that find them. Imagine coming up on your comrades naked scalped and god knows what. It’s how you strike fear into the heart of the enemy. Aldo the Apache understood this, native Americans were known for this. Same with marines in the pacific and Vietnam. The only way to strike fear into a heartless enemy is through the only thing they care for their comrades. I always thought Tarantino captured this barbarism perfectly. It still carries true to combat today.

Thats the point of this movie. These guys are so insane and brutal, that You are starting to relate more and more for the germans, for example for Frederick Zoller or the guys in the bar. This movie shows perfectly, that most of the people being killed are only normal men, and not crazy n@zis. The true crazy ones are the basterds
