"JMU grad finds UA-cam fame with Zelda medley"
For my Senior Cello Recital at James Madison University in March 2006, I decided that my recital needed something extra. This is the encore of my recital. If you can name all of the zelda themes used in this medley, you are as cool as me. Enjoy!
For those wondering how I got the sheet music. I listened to an old Hyrule Symphony mp3 and transcribed the parts into a music writing program. I then added two sections (dungeon from link 2 and zeldas lullaby) and changed around some other stuff (like adding the full version of the original).
**1,000,000 views! WOW!!!** Thanks everyone!
Make sure to check out my video games concert performed in 11/08:
Legend of Zelda Medley • Triforce Quartet: Lege...
Final Fantasy Medley (Pt 1 • Triforce Quartet: Them... Pt 2 • Triforce Quartet: Them... )
Mario Bros. Medley ( • Triforce Quartet: Them... )
Encore: 'Never Forget' Theme from Halo
( • Triforce Quartet: Them... )
*side note*
I realize it's not completely in tune, we put it together at the last second. I actually didn't decide I was going to do it until the day of my recital. I admit that if I knew it was going to go viral on youtube, I would've spent a lot more time practicing/rehearsing it!
This was literally one of my first UA-cam videos i had ever seen. I used to watch it a billion times a day, I remember being so obsessed with watching this. Probably one of the reasons i began to be inspired to playing my first instrument.
Seeing comments like this is incredibly amazing and humbling. Thanks for sharing

I remember!
you described me totally! same here
I've been watching this for 14 yrs now. Still amazing, still brings tears to my eyes.
Oh whow... 9 years and it's still there... It's the very first video of a Legend of Zelda arrangement I ever watched, and after 9 years it's still here. So nice to listen to it again !
And damn, this version of "Ballad of the Windfish". One of my favourite one. I feel like I time traveled to the past for 6 minutes~
I used to listen to this video multiple times a day, back when I was a kid. Always a pleasure to hear.
This was also one of the first videos I really loved on youtube, it's such a great classical piece, it really brings you back to the game and how as a little kid you thought you kid defeat evil in the world once and for all, and like in reality and the game, the quest to defeat evil never stops cause the evil is in us and it's a constant battle to not give into the the eviler versions of ourselves.
I remember when I saw this back in 2006. I was starting out in college thinking man I wish the triforce quartet could play for an event I was hosting. I cannot believe it is actually going to happen! I cannot wait!!!!!
Unbelievable, I've listened to this at least 30 or 40 times and everytime it always brings me back to those old unforgetable memories.
Amazing work, and a favorite of mine for more than a decade.
Tell me, can you share the music sheets for this??? Please please please??
God damn, that intro brings tears to my eyes. Amazing work, wish I had seen this sooner!
The first video I favorited, back in 2006. Great memories. Hope you're all doing well!
This is so amazing!
My personal favourite - 02:30.
Executed perfectly.
10 years later this still gives me chills. My family and I listened during breakfast this morning. Zelda continues to be my favorite game and this performance is still my favorite Zelda interpretation.
17 years ago I watched this video on Youtubies for the furst time! :) Holy moly, how time flies! :)
224 people don't understand the passion it takes to appreciate this memory and performance.
Damn 17 years later and this video popped into my head! Had to come listen
that was the most beautiful and touching experience I ever had listening to zelda music
out of all the zelda games, no matter how they modify this is always going to be the difinitive tune, people (hopefully) will always remember and enjoy this, and you gys played it really well
Possibly the best thing I've ever seen and heard. Absolutely mind-bottling!
oh man. now i miss all of my old zelda games. i own and have beaten (multiple times) every one for the consoles, and now i feel like beating them again. awsome man. truely awsome.
Freakin' amazing! It's not like Zelda was the most important part of my childhood, but this music instantly makes me feel like I'm a kid again, controller in hand, on my parents living room floor.
really beautiful, and the violin has one of the best and harmonious sounds
The game is old enough to be a classic. No matter what happens it will be remembered always.
2000+ comments and over half a million views for a reason! Great job, and great performance! I love seeing how a good fantasy like The Legend Of Zelda can bring us together! Thanks!
i'm in awe. This is without a doubt one of the most amazing things i have ever seen
I love how the cello pulls it all together. I wish I had/could play the cello.
One of my favorite videos on UA-cam and one of the first I ever favorited. I'm glad to see it's still up.
yup. watched it over a year ago - still love it. well done.
This gave me chills. Truly a stellar performance.
The beginning was the best arrangement of the original zelda theme I've ever heard.
non stop shivers from how amazing this is....
GOOD GOD!!! I didnt think music could make me get the chills
Extend the bloody Zelda II intro part. That entire song is nothing short of fantastic, and how you all resonate it is simply stellar.
Really, for such a short period of time focused on it, it came out really well.
I got chills listening to this. So wonderful.
pure talent guys. totally pleasing to the ear. thank you.
Stunning. Had me in tears by the end. Fantastic arrangement!
That is so totally awesome. I play cello myself and I never thought it (and violins!) could be applied to half the themes you put into this. You really made my day with this video. :D
Oh... my... god.... Iv'e seen this like when it was first posted and I still get the chills....
Excellent work Chad! Loved the originality you put into it while keeping the theme alive.
Woah, Ballad of Wind Fish almost never pops up in medleys like this. Props for that
Wow, so old. Great transcription. I remember hearing the original Hyrule Orchestra performance from old Zelda fan sites in the early 2000s.
This is so amazing. I can't say anything else. I'm stunned.
That was the most badass performance. It was totally awesome!
Brings back many fond memories of that epic and classic game.
i love how it was pieced together well!!!
I've actually heard this arrangement before, but I still got goosebumps at 2:33! Nice job!
My god, the Dark World theme (one of my favorite themes from any game) was practically made for violins.
Well done. You have my 5.
Absolutely stunning job. Like I wrote on other videos, this is coming from a true Zelda fan. Despite the quick rush, it's nearly flawlessly executed and hey, I'm sure playing traditional instruments isn't the easiest thing with the songs layering as they do. Just tremendously wonderful work!
I need this cello part... That was very awesome!! Gorgeous playing =] I adore this, all the instruments, perfectly in tune. As expected, amazing work!
i know right ive been watching it all week just waiting
the ballad of the wind fish brought tears to my eyes... i love that game, makes me want to complete it again!
i love how the camera pans out at the end, fantastic video.
A friend of a friend had this played on a violin as she walked down the aisle on her wedding night. How amazing is that?
VERY beautifully done! Entertaining and great timing.Bravo all four of you!
Omg this is beautiful -tear drop- absolutely beautiful...
dude, this pwns so hard it gives me the shivers when i listen to it
Awesome playing - is full of Emotions!
I dont know why anybody dislike it!
this is awesome... :D
needed somethin like this to cheer me up, good to see people still make MUSIC.
I gotta agree with you, I've heard this medley more than I can count but it sounds best on strings, this video is awesome
scratch that, the whole thing was awesome and when i heard ballad of windfish my whole body started to shiver........ beautiful
There are a number of talented musicians in this world who can figure out music by ear.
You know it's a good game when just LISTENING to the music of it wants to make you play it.
When i listen to this i get that depressed feeling of the good old days of when games used to be good.
I am still amazed by this every time I get to the Dark World theme from LTTP. Seriously one of the best pieces of music put in a video game ever.
One of the coolest things I have seen
Hey this is awesome. Congrates on making this! I play the Cello in my school orchestra and just listening to the Cello parts are amazing. Keep up the great work!
This is so cool! I'm so jealous! I like when they went to the palace theme at 2:30. So sweet!
this is completely epic. love.
this just amaizing, you truly have the passion for this song
this is by far the best coverage of the loz music. I love the intro, starting slowly, gaining power with more and more strings joining. out of tune sometimes ? ok but the intensity and role of each instrument is very well done =)
Awsome job
You recreated all of the great memories of Zelda from the NES to the Ocarnia of Time and Link to the Past.
one of the most beautiful music ever composed especially in gamewise
this is the most beautiful thing ever!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome! I've only been playing for about a year because I play in my schools orchestra and I cannot love it anymore :)
Fun fact they played at my 3rd year anniversary streetpass event in 2014!
This is most def great, love it
What i love. The music of Zelda can easily be considered a classic.
I was clapping with everyone else in the end!
Great job!
This accually gave me chills.. nice work!
Oh my god.
this made me cry tears of happiness
I'm actually glad that I wasn't sitting in the audience because I'd be squealing at this awesomeness.
nice arrangement.
~BREAK OF REALITY
"heavy cello thunder"
simply beautiful
You guys are so awesome. I hope I can arrange music this well in the future.
I almost wept a little. Absolutely beautiful.
Awesome one of the best rpg's of all time wonderful arrangement!
Man the dark world theme is so awesome when played like this, fantastic :D
So, not only did you work out all four parts by ear, you only worked out you were going to perform it on the day... and it's THIS good?
That's damn impressive. Awesome work! Makes me want to play some Zelda now...
jUST bEAUTIFUL! It sounds almost identical to the mp3 version. I have it memorized and I am very impressed at your performance.
1:51 is magic, the best part! Man I miss the old school zelda
Love how you arranged it, some great talent there you guys have. 5 stars.
I know I started taking lessons 3 weeks ago. Love it :3
Been watching this since it first showed up and the Zelda 2 Palace Theme kicking in at 2:29 gives me a shiver every time. Hard to find good string renditions of that tune. Wish it was a few minutes instead of 30 seconds, but I'll take it.
You figured out the music by ear?! WOW! Playing it is one thing but that's another! Sounded great.
Sure, the dark world part is nice, but for me, it's the main theme. Every time I hear the main Zelda theme, I get goosebumps, and this version practically knocked me out!
This is the freaking coolest!
Enjoy. This is one of the firsts if not THE first Zelda medleys in UA-cam.
This is gorgeous. VERY well done!
BEAUTIFUL!!
2 words. Freakin' Fantastic! Great Job!
