Our family lived in Japan from '64-'67. We were able to get this broadcasting on some Sundays while we lived there. Wonderful memories. Mahalo for posting.

I lived in Japan from 1960 to 1963, no Hawaii Calls, but went on to Hawaii in 1964 for one year.

When I left Hawaii to attend college (Purdue) in 1953, I listened to Hawaii Calls, which was broadcast on the radio at 1 PM on Saturday. It helped me with my homesickness. When I returned to Hawaii after graduation and saw all the changes (especially all the hotels that got built at Waikiki), I left Hawaii for good and never got homesick again.

Hickam AFB...I remember it well. I did my tour at Pearl. I miss that beautiful weather, daily rainbows and those beautiful, ready to party, co-eds from the mainland...

I lived on Saratoga Rd. across from Fort DeRussy right in Waikiki. I used to go down to the Reef Hotel and sit on the sand and watch the performance of Hawai'i Calls shows. What a treat. Then 1960-61 it was not as crowded as it is today. Trump took the space where my apartment was and built that horror of a hotel that blocks the view now.

Blowing my mind. Because I thought I'd never see this film series production since I understood the producers Howard Ross and Larry Pringle, for tax purposes, later donated the syndicated filmed for TV series to the Universtiy of Hawaii Library, hence buried in their archives. Chester Lau of Tom Matsumoto Productions was the cinematographer.Tried in vain over the years to get book writers on Hawaiian Music History interested in accessing and releasing the treasure trove, since all the prominent Hawaiian entertainers of that period were archived on film. My wife, from Hollywood had worked with the director Bill Bennington previously on NBC Rose Bowl parades and reluctantly came (she LOVED working in Hollywood and girl friends told her to stay away from the "locals") to be the production secretary on the series. Which is how we first met as she was walking home from her offices in Kaiser's Hawaiian Village in the crosswalk on Ala Moana Blvd.. As I was a photographer at the time, I was returning from a model shoot and waiting for the red light to change, I said the the model sitting next to me, "I'm gonna marry that gal!" Model said she knew her and introduced me to my wife Lee at their daily condo sunset cocktail gathering. I brazenly and confidently approached Lee and said, "HI!" She looked up at me and said, "GET LOST!" Well, I didn't and the rest is history and at 81, I still miss that fantastic, a-mazing, supportive, inspiring, light-up-the-room, wife of mine. I hope we all could view ALL of the series here on UA-cam for which i'm eternally grateful.

The Banyan Tree Courtyard where Hawaii Calls was broadcast from was next door at the Moana Surfrider, not at the Royal Hawaiian.

After Los Angeles, I always wanted to go to Hawaii. I hope to get there one day. But for right now, my living expenses come first because I've been laid off since January.
