I love this movie because I live in the area that it was filmed. My dad knows the guy that sat next to Robert De Niro in the bar scene, his name is John Buchmelter. I worked at the steel mill that was in the film for almost nine years too. My dad and grandfather also retired from that mill. I live about 15 minutes from Mingo Junction Ohio where the mill and some of the other scenes in the movie where shot. To top it off, in our rec room we actually have half of the original bar that was in the movie. The bar was later cut in half. One person got 1/2, and we got the other. So the bar that we have downstairs in our rec room is actually part of the same bar that was in the movie Deer Hunter.
I own many MANY movies, and just happened to come across your review/your youtube "page"; I enjoyed your review, and enjoy the way you are VERY informative, stating COMPLETE information on ALL aspects of the disc/bluray/box set. Interesting. You're Good host. I SUBSCRIBED. I met Streep once at JFK. I wish all reviewers resembled you. I now will be paying attention and watching your future reviews. I saw DEER HUNTER when first premiered in the movie theatre and saw it in april 1979 (saw it the week of the academy awards when nominated for best picture, and happened to be visiting Los angeles, california at the time, so sat at the academy award ceremony outside, watching arrivals for the Oscars. I have been to europe few times also. Keep up the great work.
Great review mine now on order a classic film.Bought the last upgrade on bluray picture quality was great really looking forward to this 4k restoration.
this film was shot about 40 mins up the river from me. There’s a sign when you enter Mingo Junction, OH commemorating - I’d see it every time I’d drive up to see a band rehearsal. The only other cool film to be shot so close to home is The Night of the Hunter ...

Not sure why an American classic film like this is not being released first in 4K in the US but it must be they are working on another packaging set or maybe Criterion is involved on a future release. It certainly is one of my favorite films. Saw it when it was initially released back in 1978 and left the theater a different man. Back then, films like these were becoming more prevalent to a society shielded by the lack of instantaneous news. So it was and still is for me a film of great impact.
It is strange that it hasn't had a US release yet, but it must be a rights situation, and like you say, another company could be working on a release of it. Wow, seeing this in theaters must have been a tremendous experience. Thanks for watching, and for the kind words!
I agree, DeNiro's absolute best here. This film is often compared with Heaven's Gate, and one of the huge differences between the two is that HG did not have the presence of a Robert DeNiro, whose on-set leadership among the actors was a key ingredient to the success of Deer Hunter.

Thanks for the post.im sorry but i totally disagree with your comments about grain on films.i detest grain on any film if your buying a 4k disc which as you know the picture should be 4x the resolution of blu rays the picture quality should therefore be that.not layered in grain.if you want grain buy the dvd.i recently bought bram stokers dracula and the picture was no better than a dvd.there is a big difference between dnr and a 4k scan.just my opinion
Firstly, thanks for the comment and for watching, Scott. I have a bit to say in response to this. I respect your opinion about the grain. I think a great many modern film enthusiasts prefer a cleaner and more digital look to their films, which I too love on films that are shot digitally. But, movies such as The Deer Hunter and Bram Stoker's Dracula were shot on film stock. The grain is independent of the viewing resolution. The grain has always existed in the original film stock that the movie was shot on, but in the case of previous formats, such as DVD, the grain texture was obscured due to the lower resolution, i.e less information translated to the screen, or it was removed by the author of the DVD disc. The grain is not added or layered on, we just see more of it because of increases in resolution. It is simply a part of the film. If the grain had been removed from The Deer Hunter for this release, it would look artificial and digital. The picture would look uneven, because some of the scenes are naturally more grainy (exterior sequences, or scenes set in darkness), whereas some other scenes have much less grain. We've seen this for years now with blu-ray discs, where grain has been removed, and the outcome has been hated by the vast majority of viewers (who can forget this example? bit.ly/2P3fIse). You make dislike the appearance of grain in your films, which again, I completely respect, but it is not a flaw in either the film or the authoring of the 4K blu-ray disc, and it should not be tampered with.

I think I am in the minority here when I say I liked the 4k transfer of Terminator 2 Judgement day.. even though it's DNRd to hell. It's what James Cameron chose to do for his film as he supervised the 4k process and also changed the colour timing much to a lot of people's annoyance. I personally liked the look of the film and if it's Cameron's decision to make these changes then who are we to say he is wrong to do so.. as for the deer hunter if there was a lot of DNR applied to remove film grain the film would look to smooth and it would make cast members faces look pale and waxy. The grain structure allows the imperfections and skin details shine through. As for Terminator 2 the film has always looked digital with a futuristic tint so much so that the Terminators have always looked like they are supposed to. Almost robotic and lifeless. There are details I find in other areas that benefit this 4k master that people simply will overlook. Is this the best T2 will look?.. Most probably yes as James Cameron chose to correct his film, even as far as correcting some mistakes which also causes a lot of controversy but I personally like it. The Deer Hunter as you mentioned in your great review is also going to be controversial regards to these decisions but we must appreciate that if indeed it is the artistic decision from the film makers then like it or not it is ultimately their work and final decision. What Languages has the 4k Bluray - i Know that German Language was on the normal Bluray release (White Cover with Robert De Niro on it).
It looks like it only has the English audio tracks and hard of hearing subtitles. No other languages it seems.
I hope the chinese version "bullet in the head" also got a 4k edition.
