I was there in 2016 with my family. Wife went antique shopping and I spent the whole day on the fields doing all the lectures I could. Got to meet Mattand John during the lectures and pick their minds.
fireman19841 1st visit was after the filming of the movie in late 90s, was lucky enough to actually have Scott Harmann (sp?) as a tour guide. Hooked ever since. 30 years later, I give lectures, teach children & anybody interested abt the Civil War. Everytime I've been to Gburg, it's a new experience as the battlefield has grown, changed, evolved..ect to what it is today. Sadly I am unable to go anymore due to poor health & distance.. (I live in Ut) The next best thing to being there r these videos. I am ETERNALLY grateful for all the hard work it takes to produce them. They allow the next generation to do things not taught in school anymore...learn abt our history as a nation
of course, the time taken for these videos is great! While I do enjoy the major action videos (Little Round Top, Picketts Charge) I even more so enjoy the smaller lesser known units they cover.
I wish I got notified if new lectures and battlefield tours. Despite subscribing and touching the bell it’s like finding buried treasure. I appreciate all posted videos. All the park rangers are excellent.

At the 14:00 so far, forgive me for raining on your parade... They had field glasses in 1863. If General Lee wanted to know where the Union troops were? Seminary Ridge is the perfect place to look from, in order to find out. General Lee didn't know... is a sad excuse. Especially considering where General Lee's headquarters were. And please, please don't say that General Sickles change of position came as a complete suprise to the Confederate Army. A.P. Hill's troops had a perfect line of sight to what the Union troops were doing. And being a Yank, I'm pretty sure "the guy in charge" of the Union Army, was General Meade, not just Meade. Please show the same respect for both Generals when making these videos, Mrs Atkinson. Thank You NPSGettysburg, for all that you have done.
zettle 234 really splitting hairs there, aren't you? I assume you know about the flank attack at Chancellorsville. There are many instances like this where large numbers of troops were missed all together, whether it was due to faulty intelligence or just mistakes.
zettle 234 If you have been to Gettysburg and walked the ground, you’d know that the land have swales and ridges that mask much of the landscape. If you stand on Seminary Ridge, you can’t see Devil’s Den. Lee had no idea because the land rose and masked much of the Union battle line.
Fact of the matter is Lee DIDNT have correct info re Union positions around south end of the battlefield. Field glasses or not. Hence the Longstreet change of ave. of attack July 2...Have you actually studied the battlefield physically? Your opinion/impression of Lee's attack plans confuse myself as well as others..Im curious as to where you base your assumptions on..
I served 24 years in the US Army as a non-commissioned officer and as a commissioned officer. Retired in 2012 as a Lieutenant Colonel. I very much appreciate your concern for respecting the individual commanders of the Armies in contact at Gettysburg. I do not know if you have served in any branch of the military, but want you to be aware there is nothing disrespectful about referring to a General Officer -or personnel of any rank- by last name once you have established their rank with the audience. We do this for the sake of brevity, and it is accepted practice - have done so myself in many briefings. We can use a more casual reference such as "guy in charge" on occasion to vary the tenor/tone of the briefing. Being too formal and too 'stilted' all the time turns an audience off so we do use a lighter tone when appropriate to avoid this. We teach these techniques and more in the Instructor Training Course (ITC) to Army personnel who will be "on the platform" teaching Soldiers. Just a perspective from one who has served and has taught Military History to Soldiers and to ROTC Cadets - including the Battle of Gettysburg.
Pretty basic stuff. Masterson's new book, Meade at Gettysburg, really lays out Meade's decisions and orders before, during and after the battle. Not sure about which is the best reading on Lee's command.
Lee wrote that the attack on the smaller hill (Later known as Little Round Top) by Oates was embarrassing and took away from the attack by Law. Law ordered Oates back into line and to IGNORE the small hill- that hill- Little Round Top meant nothing- NOTHING to Lee or the ANV sans Warren and his usual drama queen theatrics. Had the Confederates captured the hill it still would have been useless- the topography would have prevented them from aiming anything at Meade's line. Biggest myth of the battle was Little Round Top.
No idea. He talks about getting his children. He seems to speak more about childcare at times plus mentioning some other lady at times. Must admit I wondered myself.
