Lol. I prefer the little ones for screws and nuts. The larger ones are great for when the threads of a pipe break off in a fitting.

I've been in construction all my life and that's an unusually large bolt extractor even for a well stocked shop, let alone someone's home tools.

You aren't kidding. The grain structure of that pot metal was like rock salt.... Probably could have snapped it apart with a cheap screw driver.

THese Zinc alloy disc locks are useless. Ive broken two of them simply by forgetting about them and riding off. The locks shattered with no visible damage to the caliper. Not really a challenge LPL.
It is not whatever or not this is a challenge... its whatever or not you can trust this product to secure anything. And to our complete and utter surprise *cough* this Master Lock product turned out to be made out of cheese grade toy metal.
I've done it twice and never user a disc lock again. One was the same design as this one. But nit a master lock and It was a tubular not a disc detainer, but the first lock I failed was a more flat design. I vaguely remember taking it back to the shop and demanding my money back. I use a small but thick shackle u lock now.

@@adamwest8711 actually it's really easy to do with disc locks. Most of them come with a brightly coloured cord attached which you put the other end on the handlebar to remind you it's there.

Using a master lock for anything is the same as putting a sticker on your possessions asking would be thieves to please not steal your stuff.
Certianly any thief who still owned that many tools would have better ways to make a couple grand...

I used squared screws drill and hammer them in, heat too.
Helicoils always can cover the damage if I have to drill out

Excellent demonstration! Amazing that lock manufacturers dont look at these videos and learn a thing or two about design flaw issues.
They know about a lot of the flaws, it's just that the products are designed and produced to a price point. The general public don't want to pay the price of quality, and many don't know any better (e.g. strength different between aluminium, zinc alloy, steel, hardened steel lock bodies)
They just draw something up and have the chicoms or Mexicans produce one from rubber dog feces. 99.98% will never be attacked

This is why I chose an abus 8008. The locking lug on mine actually engages with the lock body on the other side so it can’t be spread apart quite so easily.

That's an excellent example of lateral thinking,and deviousness.Glad to discover there is a successful use for those types of bolt extractor,in 40 years of restoring motorcycles I've never managed to get a broken bolt out with one.
Thanks... FWIW, the larger extractors are great for when pipe threads break off in a fitting. For bolts, I prefer the square ones you hammer in.
I have a similar style lock and if chosen properly, there's almost no clearance between the end of the lock and edge of the disk. Thanks for a great video.

Thats is soft stuff, stud extractors are very hard and very brittle. I have snapped loads trying to gets bolts out.

If it's cast zinc then you could use a hacksaw. Then again, this method was faster and more compact

Very nice. Clearly, all of these are just to keep honest men honest. A determined thief knows what to look for, and will be able to defeat these locks.
At a lock manufacturer's trade conference in Dallas a few years ago, the CEO of a well known lock company said to me "Out locks are just to keep the honest honest". So you're exactly right.
The point isn't to make it impossible to steal. If someone wants it bad enough they'll wait til you unlock it, get on, then brain you from behind, take it, and the keys.

You can see from the quality of the CASTING that you could break that with a few hammer hits.
Also to fight against that attack they could make the pin engage in the other side and turn to strengthen it so it won't bend open as easily.

I know, right? Having had a number of nice-to-awesome street bikes over the past few decades, all I can say is that I'm really glad I quit riding before the internet allowed for the creation of channels like this.
There’s the problem. Because of the complex shape of these locks, most of them are cast from zinc, or machined from aluminum.

Wow. Easier than expected. At least with a disc lock if you live in an apartment or park your bike in an area with other close bikes it'll make a thief consider taking another bike that doesn't have one first.

The lock cylinder is only as good as the lock body it is put in so this is good to know.

I am surprised to see that master lock made that out of cast aluminum. I would be interested to see if the same lock body made from cast iron could stand up to the same attack.
In that case it's important to fit a lock that hugs the circumference of the disc

Considering the cast material, I wonder if it would just be easier to use a prybar. If a thief is just going to roll it off, minor rotor damage wouldn't really be a concern to them.
A pry bar might result in rotor warpage or other damage. That’s why I didn’t try.

I'm sure others have mentioned this but you're supposed to put the lock bolt inside one of the cross drilled holes on the rotor. If installed in a difficult position, you shouldn't have room to throw an extractor in like that. Plus you will have the brake calipers on the rotor as well, so this really isn't a real world scenario.
What you said makes no sense. First, this one is NOT designed to go through the holes. The bolt is too big, and will not fit. Second, if you could get it through the hole, the position would make it EASIER to open. Third, the caliper in no way interferes with this.

It's interesting that the lock manufacturers don't seem interested in making their locks secure. A simple cam on the opposite side of the hasp would have stopped the spreading.

A cordless impact driver would work, but they're kind of noisy and might draw attention to what you're doing. A ratchet is still pretty fast and a good deal more discrete, so I think it's more likely to be what a thief with any brains might use.
Dirk Stabins Just hold a rag/shirt etc over it for sound deadening, won't be running long enough to overheat, plus its stolen anyway so who cares. The dewalt cordless angle grinder is the thief's tool of choice here, doesn't matter how loud it is, who is going to challenge you? Yes, this is England so no guns and weak police/justice system.
I have one. But if I’m going to use power tools and make a ton of noise, then I’m taking out the angle grinder.
A thief wouldn't use an impact driver, it serves no purpose here. Much harder to carry, louder, and much less disposable. There's very little time advantage once you consider the size of an impact and therefore the time to pull it out and put it away before riding off
They generally don’t work well as bold extractors because they spread out the bolt and lock it in the hole
It looks like the first one was trashed the second one looks an awful lot better but either way you get a free jail cell and a motorcycle for as long as you can keep it
It’s cast, maybe it would work better if they made it out a high strength steel either way they don’t wanna see LPL getting his hands on it

That's the first MasterLock I've seen with a somewhat decent core, other than that LOTO lock maybe.
Another reason to avoid Master locks. Also, not all disc locks or brake discs allow for that extra room to put something in between it like that but that's beside the point. Good video.
Most bike thieves don't bother with things like beating a lock. If it's chained or locked, they just find one that isn't and throw it into a van. Takes way less time than breaking a lock. Bike locks are mostly a deterrent, they won't stop anyone who actually wants a particular bike.

Its a common way of breaking these types of locks put it on a rechargable wheel nut remover it only takes seconds . As a bike mechanic and a lock pick i prefer to pick as most people find there keys the next day . Its just a shame the lock makers cant make a decent bike lock

Looks like a gap big enough for the extractor has to be there for this to work. When I fit my disk lock to the back disk there is a flush fit with less than a couple mm gap. Larger gap when I use it on the front. There was an AMA with a former motorcycle thief on reddit who said if it took more than 15 seconds to steal a bike he'd move on. I would guess a thief with the wherewithal to use this method would probably not stick around long enough to use it. His biggest suggestion btw was to lock your forks. Breaking a fork lock is a pain in the ass, takes time, and usually multiple people.
You definitely need a gap ... if it fits perfectly, then a different exploit is needed.
Can you redo this test with a cordless impact to show just how quickly this can be done? I’m curious

Martin Kadlec, I believe that nothing is bullet proof. If man made it, then man can certainly bypass or break it.
This technique works on a cheap brake disc lock like this one mounted on a brake disc in a vice, but it won't work on ABUS alarm brake disc lock mounted on a motorcycle. That thing is extremely sensitive and good luck breaking it open without moving it at all. If you disturb it even a little, the entire neighborhood will know about it, including the owner. Especially if you mount it tightly under the mudguard on the engine side, giving you literally no space to work with.
They have been using claw hammers crowbars for years making noise..I'm shore all the bike owners will thank you for showing the crims how to do it silent..Good video
