Thank you Pete! I guess I need to bone up on my tree planting...this is the first I've ever heard trimming the tree back to promote low branching. Why do we want that?

Hey Jeff 👋 for our trees we want to keep them 8ft or lower in height. In that height for most apples I usually try to prune them to a central leader with a scaffold of branches down low followed by a second scaffold higher up (usually about waist and then chest / shoulder level). So by cutting the leader a bit lower it will stimulate the tree to branch out down low so I can establish that lower scaffold. It’s not necessary for tree health, it’s more a convenience for me to allow me to prune and harvest from the tree at a lower level. At the tip of that cut a new central leader will also form allowing me to establish the higher scaffold. Hope that helps!
