Gentile Christian here. Ok. You got me hooked! I’ve read the “Old Testament” several times. Your videos have added important context to my understanding of scripture. History and context are key.
I’ve basically emptied my library of all books regarding Jewish History and purchased several books on the subject matter.
I’ve always respected and admired the Jewish people. While I’ve always known that their mission was a universal one aimed at all of creation, I now know that their story is unparalleled in human history. God is clearly steering the boat my Jewish brothers and sisters occupy. You may find it odd for me to say so but my new found knowledge has strengthened my faith.

Hello, Dr Abramson - just a quick comment not on this video (which I haven't watched yet) but to thank you for an earlier video on the state of Jews in medieval Europe and their distinct character as being outside the feudal system, urban dwellers following urban trades rather than farmers, and having a 'special relationship' to the king, as well as their place in the medieval economy as money-lenders. You encapsulated these ideas very clearly, and I have been able to use them in some high school history teaching I did recently in England to students with no background in these issues. So, many thanks for your clear presentation of principles.

You mentioned that there isn’t much archaeological evidence to back up the Torah period. However, aren’t the Tombs of the patriarchs and the tomb of Rachel archaeological evidence? Also, when i attended a bus tour around Cairo, the tour guide pointed to some storage structures, and mentioned these are the storage houses that Joseph commissioned - is that false? Many thanks

Dr. Abramson, I’m interested in Jewish history dating back to ancient times. Given the other civilizations in the orbit of the ancient Israelites/Jews, such as Canaanites, Phoenicians, Egyptians, Moabites, Ammonites, and later the Persians, Greeks, Romans, should I also be studying ancient history?
I recently found out that they found a reference to Hebrew people in Ethiopian archeological finds dated 800 BCE

@leumasdiderot First of all, Abraham was not Sumerian, he was likely from Upper Mesopotamia, not the Persian Gulf. The Israelites and Jews seem to have been primarily of Levantine ancestry, either because they actually originated there or from intermarriage with neighbors. Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Maghrebi, and Syrian Jews all have significant Southern European and North African ancestry, which pulls them slightly toward Europe genetically. They all still fall well within the East Mediterranean genetic pool and very clearly derive around half of their ancestry from the Middle East, mostly the Levant. Ashkenazi Jews specifically are about 10-15% Northern European.
The only people today who likely resemble ancient Israelites genetically would be Samaritans. Most modern Jews are very similar to the Jews that lived in the Mediterranean and Middle East 2000 years ago.
East Asian, Indian, Ethiopian, and Yemenite Jews do resemble their former neighbors genetically, but all seem to also have some ancient Levantine (Israelites) origins.
@leumasdiderot Levantine Christians still resemble ancient Levantines. Muslims have heavily mixed with other Muslim populations over the past 1300 years. Modern Jews are all mixed, but mostly with ancient Greeks/Romans and Mesopotamians. North African Jews are only about 20% North African, the rest is Levantine and East Mediterranean.
Almost all of the "European" ancestry in modern Jews is ancient Greco-Roman and has nothing to do with Crusaders or Visigoths. Christians and Muslims from all over the world generally resemble the populations that lived there before Christianity and Islam. Jews never resemble these. All of this information is easily accessible online.
Aside from Sicilians and Cypriots, no "European" population has any significant Levantine ancestry.
@leumasdiderot I honestly don't know what you're trying to say, but Christians and Muslims are almost all converts because Christianity and Islam are both prosletyzing religions. Aside from regions right next to the Levant (such as Iraq and Greece) Jews NEVER resemble their former neighbors beyond sharing maybe 20-25% of their ancestry with them at the most (usually it's less). Jews were almost always descended from JEWISH migrants, not local converts.
Your claims about Ashkenazi Jews are 100% false. This isn't a matter of agreement or disagreement. Almost all Ashkenazi Y-DNA is Middle Eastern, while much of their mtDNA is Southern European. This is NOT a "very small possible trace," it's 50% or more of their ancestry. Any autosomal test shows this very clearly. There were no Jewish missionaries converting large populations like with Islam and Christianity. What you're claiming is a modern fabrication based on assimilationism and other motives that have no historical basis.
@leumasdiderot Lol, what? There's nothing racist about claiming that different ethnic groups have different ancestral origins. Jews are an ETHNIC group who originate in the LEVANT. This has nothing to do with superiority and, honestly, resorting to this only demonstrates that you have no argument. People who claim that Jews are just a religious group are people trying to erase Jewish history (usually) for political purposes.

I love your videos but you're very much incorrect about Jewish DNA. The vast majority (95%) of modern Jews are closely-related and fall into two distinct but similar groups. One group is Western Jews, which includes all European, North African, and Syrian Jews. The second is Mizrahi Jews, which includes Iraqi, Iranians, Caucasus, Kurdish, and Bukhari Jews. Both groups are around 50% Levantine, with the other 50% being mostly made up of Southern European and North African for Western Jews, and Mesopotamian and Persian for Mizrahi Jews.
Overall, these Jews are about as closely-related to each other as Sicilians and North Italians. Jews have extremely clear common origins, and outside of a few fringe communities, were barely mixed with their neighbors. Almost all intermarriage and conversion took place before Christianity and Islam.
The main outliers are Yemenite and Ethiopian Jews, who genetically resemble their former neighbors, but certainly have ancient Jewish roots. Other tiny communities, mostly in China and India, are similar in this respect. They are the exceptions, not the rule.

But specifically, he's in the habit of referring to the Lord by other epithets, as is customary among Jews: Hashem and HaKadosh Baruch Hu. (There's a comment asking about the latter in the next lecture. It's a traditional Hebrew term.)

Thank you. I have heard "Hashem" before, and I know it means "the name." It's a reference to the four letter name which is written YHVH but which Jews read "Adonai" ("the Lord"). I don't know that I'd heard HaKadosh Baruch Hu before. Does that mean "the Holy One of His Covenant?" (Please correct me if I've translated that incorrectly.) And we could add many names besides. The Holy One of Israel describes Himself as the Fortress and strength of His people. He is our Shepherd, our Redeemer and our Deliverer.
King David was very clear in giving credit to God for the victories he won. As it says in the song he wrote 2 Samuel 22 (vss. 30-33), "For by You I can run against a troop; By my God I can leap over a wall. As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. For who is God, except the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God? God is my strength and power, And He makes my way perfect."
Compared with David's writing, perhaps you can see why I say that faith in the Lord is missing from the words of this lecturer.
@@danielfinn9460 _Hakasosh Baruch Hu_ translates as "The Holy One, Blessed is He." It has been in use at least since Talmudic times, and possibly earlier.
Kind David was writing odes to G-d, so he uses G-d's name all the time. He was not giving lectures on history. I think Dr. Abramson's model is the Book of Esther, which, without explicitly mentioning G-d's name, is plainly showing how G-d makes his presence known through (what appears to be) the normal course of life.

I'm not an expert in hieroglyphics, but I believe the term "wasted" is a translation of something like "destroyed" rather than made into waste. But maybe?

Plus, in my opinion the embalming of Yaakov and Yoceph seem to be royal phaoronic treatment, so I think Goshen became an independent territory under Yaakov (whether or not he held that title or a more holy equivalent. And the last verse in Bereshit being Yoceph's embalming seems that much more heightened in significance to me. Yes I realize other of royalty/high officials were embalmed in this way in a sarcophogus without being kings, it's just my intuition.

Yes but the 'emptied out Egypt' still convinces me they had some degree of legal rights to the land from the phaoronic granting; why did the Egyptians empty themselves out of everything we would need for the Mishkan. I thinking the Egyptians were paying the Israelites to quit their claims to the land. If it was a normal expulsion why did Egypt get emptied? And where did the mixed multitude of converts four times the number of Israelites supposedly come from if not from the native Goshenites coming under Yaakov's dominion and converting or becoming ger toshav?
