Lake Erie Seiche

  • The phenomena on the Great Lakes that sees water rapidly ride and fall from one end of the Lake to the other is called a Seiche and today we got a good one here at the East end of Lake Erie.
We are use to high water levels at this end of the lake so it's quite rare to see a seiche of this magnitude, especially in late Spring.
May 28th brought Rain and Snow to many parts of Southern Ontario but the strong North Easterly Winds created the Seiche.
I have never seen the levels this low in the 10 years that i have lived here.

I noticed that it was way out there but I didn’t know why or that it hasn’t happened for 10 years.
You have to be careful about the water quickly coming back in. I’ve walked on sand to a rock and suddenly I have to get my feet wet to get back in.
Thx for the awesome information. Well done

Kewl! Love the Lake Erie!!!!!! It's the lake version of a tsunami. It's like water in a bathtub. You sit in one end and most of the water flows to the other side. That's a seiche.

Wow! Thanks for the view. Almost looks like an ocean when the tide's out. Never seen this happen to Lake Erie before at least not on this side of the lake. Usually this side gets flooding.

Pronounced SAYSH. This happens a lot more than people realize. I hunt ducks on Sandusky bay and sometimes pick up my decoys by the end of the hunt on dry land. Having to drag my boat out the water to get back in to the ramp. Other times I have water creeping up and rising on me.

My sailboat was in a marina at Port Clinton Ohio on Lake Erie.
A seiche drained it and my keel had wallow out a hole in the mud that kept her upright.
The wind that caused the seiche stopped and the marina filled in minutes. I’ll bet the current in channel to the lake from west harbor was twenty knots.

For those interested: the lake’s name is French, and was originally spelt Herrié, for once the final e is not silent.
Likewise, the word seiche is French for dried up.
That land was French for a few centuries, after all.

Growing up on the shore of Lake Erie in Sheffield Lake Ohio , I witnessed this happen in the late 1960's . The lake was dead calm with a south , south west wind towards Canada. My favorite adventures after school was to walk the beach looking for treasures, plentiful after storms. The old house is gone, replaced my a new, the new owner tells by tax records 40 feet of land was lost over the years. I truly miss the water. There is a Crystal Beach just west if Vermilion Ohio, also was an amusement park.

What a great and amazing video and view! It really is almost like your own inland, freshwater version of a "low tide" like we would have right outside our window here by the saltwater Atlantic Ocean. It resembles that so much visually, that it's hard to imagine being in that video but not having the characteristic marine smell of the ocean. I wonder if your periodic freshwater seiches help provide the same upwelling and mixing of offshore and deepwater nutrients to life near the shore, like our oceanic tides do here?

Saw your questions about the Great Lakes, even if I am 3 years too late!!LOL. YES, violent storms do bring up a revolution of water, although the Lakes are deep( over 13oo ft in Superior) so, hard to say if it actually comes from bottom. Yes, we have the same " ocean" smell at times, even if we are not salt water. It is that watery, fishy, dead smell. Weather conditions, air temps, time of year & location all play a part of how pronounced the smell is. Do come to see our Great Lakes( if you haven't already). You may be amazed at the size, the beaches, the vistas & the topography that surround our Lakes. I live in Michigan & adore my state. We have the best combination of Florida beaches, New England type villages & Maine's rocky coast without the salt, sharks or crowds. We are extremely family oriented & Senior friendly, too!!😮
