STS-7 Launch and Land

The prelaunch, launch, and landing activities of the STS-7 Space Shuttle mission are highlighted in this video, with brief footage of the deployment of the Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS). The flight crew consisted of Cmdr. Bob Crippen, Pilot Rich Hauck, and Mission Specialists John Fabian, Dr. Sally Ride, and Norm Thaggart. With this mission, Cmdr. Crippen became the first astronaut to fly twice in a Space Shuttle Mission and Dr. Sally Ride was the first American woman to fly in space. There is a large amount of footage of the Space Shuttle by the aircraft that accompanies the Shuttle launchings and landings.

This was the second flight of Challenger, the first flight with an American female crew member, Sally Ride, the first flight with 5 crew members and the only flight of Challenger to successfully deploy 2 commercial communications satellites. For the first time, pictures and views of The Whole Shuttle flying in space were captured by the SPAS free-flying satellite, deployed by mission Specialist John Fabian. Challenger was meant to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the first ever return to launch site in spaceflight history but bad weather forced a diversion to Edwards Air Force Base, California, a diversion which happened a lot over the lifetime of the Shuttle programme. Commander Robert Crippen made his second flight and was the first astronaut to fly the Shuttle twice. Pilot Frederick Hauck flew for the first time and would later command the first post Challenger disaster flight on Discovery. Mission Specialist John Fabian made his first flight, as did Sally Ride and Norman Thagard, the latter bring a late addition to the crew to study space sickness. He would later be the first American astronaut to fly a long duration flight on the Russian Mir Space Station.
