  • Groupers, pomfrets, seabass; some of Singapore’s most popular fish have seen price hikes of about 20 per cent this year, the highest year on year rise in a decade.
Host Shrey Bhargava heads across the causeway to find out the reason for the rising prices. He speaks to fishermen, fishery owners and fish farmers and discovers complex challenges the industry is facing. I believe that waste in the hospitality industry is a blight on all our futures. It is said that travel broadens the mind, but most tourism (and associated hospitality) today is just a longer version of the commute, with set routes and networks with minimal interactions with people of an area. And like any commute, it is time constrained, which means a cost premium on inputs which is asked and handed over. Effectively rewarding the waste that follows. A devastating model for our environment underwritten by us, the tourists, who for better or for worse know no different and are coralled into such trade routes en masse.

This is another issue that has been around for quite some time. Every country seems to have issues like this. I boggles my mind that the concept of harvesting young fish will ultimately hurt the business.
I know they don't care but in the video you never mentioned anything about a timeline of when fish will be running out at drastic levels. Because it is this reason alone why current boats don't care. The price they can get now before they die is a gain. It's basically a carpe diem attitude.
I really see local governments or national governments laying down rules for the conversation of the resource. Imagine 25-50 years down the line you'll be limited to what you can and cannot eat fish wise not just from it being extremely expensive but because of bans and super controls by new laws etc. Totally not looking forward to that for future generations
Do whatever you can to be self-sustaining. What you start now can be handed down and perfected by the time your great great grandchildren are your age.

Firstly, although we have strong currency value, our fishes all are imported and become even more expensive for us over nothing but exchg rare only. Even dun compare to Malaysia or Indonesia, with abundance of fresh fish with low low price, Japan the most fresh fish catch n eaten are considered even better than us, own fishing and fish fresh n good n affordable, not forgetting their fishery are cleaned and neater and structured, our is mess.

So whether it's legal or illegal fishing boats both have to deal with high costs for fuel like diesel food labor so if they have to spend weeks or months at sea fishing that's going to require high cashflow so to meet this cashflow from time to time when the boat storage holds for fish get full they have to empty it somewhere and when fuel tanks get low they have to refuel somewhere so where do they do it "somewhere" ? 😂😂

Fisherman: Illegal trawlers are catching everything and destroying sea beds leaving nothing in future.
