    From one Scotsman to another, well done. In the process of collecting the nasty stuff to get going. Can't see a problem by doing it yourself as others may wish to spent £7 plus per bottle, however, myself, I know a bargain when I see one. Thanks was very useful and very thoughtful to share the tip. After years of using enamels (Humbrol and Tamiya) and mineral turps as a thinner and cleaner for me airbrush, I have just started to change over to use acrylic paints.
    Now after watching your vid, I now know what to clean the airbrush with after spraying acrylics.

    Nice one Terry! I've been using IPA as an airbrush cleaner, but didn't realise it could be watered down. The raw stuff is great for stripping acrylic paint from a model. I get my IPA from eBay, where I typically pay around £6 with free delivery for a litre. Those of us on a limited budget need to save the pennies when we can. I'll definitely be diluting my IPA as a brush cleaner. Looking forward to the tutorial on thinner.

    • @SmoosWorkshop
      @SmoosWorkshop  6 років тому +1

      you can use it neat for degreasing and stripping paint on PE as in styrene plastic but don't use it on bandai plastic as it makes it brittle, a 33% mix is adequate for airbrush cleaning but strength can be adjusted to suit you paints, much more economical padding it out like i show in the video :)

    • @VC27
      @VC27 5 років тому

      Tony Blackwell - you could also strip old acrylic paint from a model using the original Dettol anti septic liquid.

    Thanks for the info. I use 91% isopropanol which is more readily available and is cheaper on sale in drug stores in the US. I just 10% add more of it and then add less DI water later after the windscreen cleaner add. BTW, windscreen cleaner has at least 10% isopropanol and 5% methanol in it to prevent it from freezing in the winter.

    Great video Terry. I have been making my own for about a year with the same ingredients and quantities as you. However i do find it quite weak compared to proper brands. It dosen't seem to shift Tamiya and Mr Hobby paints very well so i just make it alot stronger and it doe's the job.

    Thank you for clearing something up for me. I was confused because some people say use glass cleaner and some say use the wind screen fluid and there's a difference between the two. When you explained that the alcohol was the main cleaner and the less important wind screen fluid had a mild detergent effect (and color) it clicked for me. The windscreen fluid isn't as harsh as glass cleaner and it's cheaper.

      glycerin is a component of retarder and flow improver , good for thinners but not required in a cleaning agent

    Handy extra tip - if you want free "distilled" water and have a condenser type clothes dryer, use the water that's condensed. Free, clean and no minerals.

    Why are you wasting money on 99.9% isopropyl and then diluting with water? 70% isopropanol has 30% water in already and is much cheaper.

      Because i use it neat for other applications, the same reason i dont buy ready diluted paint, you can get it cheaper but was what i could get at the time

    I can hardly understand any word he's saying. Is there a text version of how to mix the ingredients anywhere?

    Thanks for the info. I use 91% isopropanol which is more readily available and is cheaper on sale in drug stores in the US. I just 10% add more of it and then add less DI water later after the windscreen cleaner add. BTW, windscreen cleaner has at least 10% isopropanol and 5% methanol in it to prevent it from freezing in the winter.
