Nyköping is one of Sweden’s oldest cities, situated a little over an hour’s drive south of Stockholm. In the Middle Ages, kings Birger Jarl and Magnus Ladulås built a castle that became the foundation of "Nyköpingshus" - the destination of this walk.
A famous event of the Middle Ages in Nyköping was the banquet held here in 1317, when King Birger had his brothers Erik and Valdemar imprisoned after a power struggle that had lasted for years. Tradition has it that the king threw the key to the dungeon into the river, where a boy fished it out by chance in the late 19 th century - that is, if it is the same key.
In the 16th Century, when Karl IX was king he thought that the castle was outdated and renovated it to one of the most luxurious castles that could be imagined at that time. The renaissance castle, which was the pride of the city, was burned down in a city fire in 1665. It was later burned down again on 25 July 1719. Some of the bricks where used to build Stockholm Castle, and the Nyköping castle, where births and deaths of kings has taken place was only partly restored in the 20th century. But the journey is the destination! This walk takes you along charming buildings and nature before passing through parts of the ruin.

After the Capital, Nyköping is my favorite city in Sweden. It's so beautiful, so wonderful, has it's own archipelago, and the whole waterfront area has been developed a few years back with lots of amenities. A perfect mix of cute/quaint, stores, restaurants, pubs, cafe's etc. Also lots of huge new stores/eateries on the outskirts. I've been there in both Summer & Winter. It's a summer paradise and a Winter dream. The most beautiful city at Christmas. Compact city by area which makes it easily walkable and by bike, but also big enough it definitely doesn't feel small. When you're there walking and exploring it feels much bigger than it is. There's no shortage of things to do/see/go, and loads of cafe's, restaurants etc. Also many big events held yearly. Nyköping is not only Södermanlands gem it's the country's gem.

15:54 Wow, I am witnessing for the first time what it feels like to live in the 12th century medieval times. It is like a time machine. If only those walls could talk how it is like back then 😁

The infrastructure, architecture and parks have been well preserved, there is culture even in such trifles as an unpaved path with rubble, in Russians everything is rolled into concrete or asphalt, and in summer there is an unbearable heat in the middle of the panel areas. Asian fetid dump :) Protect culture in everything, Swedes ;)

Sorry, I forgot to answered to your nice comment. I hope you find some grass, gravel and preserved history- I can’t believe Russia would let that go 💛
