I can't decide which of the two singers I like better. But perhaps that's the strength of the band - either of them could sing lead, and harmonizing together they were always fantastic.
Frida was the groups pro vocalist and on stage pro. She was Stig Andersson's (Polar Music,) golden girl. She checked all the boxes: Pro vocalist, high skill level, keen ear, experience, stage, theater, TV, radio, stellar reputation (since grade school), modeling, loved performing live, looks, fit body. Frida left after the foursome after their cabaret shows winter of 70/71. She went on tour with a male vocalist. The foursome was done. No future ABBA. But Stig/Polar Music was not gonna let her get away. Stig Andersson may have been Polar Music but Frida had the pull. She knew her value. It took Stig approximately a yearand a sweet deal and contract to get Frida back. Part of the deal was a solo contract than included 'Frida Ensam' (Frida Alone) album/project. You were talking about the directing style of some of their videos. The guy who directed them was Lasse Hallstrom who became a famous movie director and got Academy Award nominations for directing My Life as a Dog and The Cider House Rules.
so happy to see you again with ABBA songs "Fernando" (1976) is slowly, and beautiful The best is the beauty of his vocal harmonies, very soft at the whisper level but at a level of perfection Lately I have compared it to "Chiquitita" because they have similarities and contrasts (but I wait when You did "Chiquitita") ABBA had already recorded "Dancing Queen" and it came from the success of "Mamma Mía" It was the manager who convinced Them to record "Fernando" so as not to repeat the style (the brunette Frida had done it before on her solo album in Swedish and it was a success) The manager was right and everything was a success, one after another in 1976, that gives ABBA three #1 consecutives in UK with: Mamma Mía Fernando Dancing Queen "Fernando" was a colossal success in Australia (14 weeks #1 surpassed the BEATLES with "Hey Jude") and #1 in U.S. Adult Contemporary now I suggest you "Chiquitita" (1979) the premier to Concert for Unicef: ua-cam.com/video/oMIw_y9uRT8/v-deo.html "Chiquitita" was the major ABBA hit in Latin América with royalties donated to Unicef A cordial greeting with all affection from Buenos Aires Argentina
Abba has 100+ recorded songs in their catalog. They have about 20 number 1 hits and have sold around 450 million albums worldwide. So, no one hit wonders. One of the most successful bands ever.
ABBA had at least 4-5 big hits before Dancing Queen! Yet DQ dropped at the peak of the disco era and will forever be one of it's signature songs. That's why radio stations and clubs always play it. So, before Dancing Queen, you'll want to listen to "Waterloo", their first big hit here in the US. "SOS", "Chiciquitita", "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do", and "Mamma Mia"! Then even more big hits after DQ as well... "Take A Chance on Me" is really playful, and simple fun.
ABBA were one of the few Scandinavian bands to make it big in the U.K. . I remember my mum playing this . We got sent to the local shop to buy it. That is when you could buy single records at local shops chemists and all kinds of shops ...lol . The adults were having a party and sent us to buy this lol . Memories
5:54 OLD DUDE HERE. WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER ABBA WAS THE BIGGEST, MOST POPULAR GROUP IN THE WORLD. I remember my friends would even fight over an ABBA poster. ABBA was a super-group back in the day!
Yes you are so right, they are the best duo, I have seen them many times live since I am from Sweden and old enough to have had the pleasure to be at their shows.
This bands music has bounced back more than a red ball tied to paddle by a rubber band! They run hot, then not, then hot, then not, repeat as required. The songs have very long legs! They stand the test of time. Why? In the world of POP/ROCK there is no other sound like them! We hear just one of the girls voices and we know who it is and what is coming. I am so happy for them and their new round of success!
i remember when i was a kid growing up in Australia this song was huge , it sat at the top of the charts for an eternity, if you turned your transistor radio on guarantee this song would be on
If you haven't heard: "ABBA - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)", that should be your priority. It's easily in their top 3 best songs. Hard beat, disco, catchy. Just great.
@@marcodebrabander5751 Love the video clip though! Would be great if someone put that up and then inserted some more clips with the longer bridge) then back to the rest of the video.
They've got about 50 great songs and the rest are good though (listening to all 8 albums of theirs is always a joy staring with their last one in 1981 and going backwards in time). i find it hard to pick a fav, but Gimme Gimme Gimme is certainly a great track!
With all my respect to your opinion... but I don't agree with the word 'easily' I think that it's 'so hard' to choose a Top 5 between so many greatest and fantastic ABBA songs (included a lot of Masterpieces) and "Gimme gimme gimme" isn't Top 3 (or Top 5) to me it's greatest! but not a Masterpiece, like: "S.O.S.", "Dancing Queen" or "The winner takes it all" (for example)
Have you done Knowing Me Knowing You, Money Money Money, The Name of the Game... they had soooo many hits. They ruled the world, except for the US, in the 70s and beginning of the 80's. Be happy that you have something new - old - to explore.
Fernando is one I like the most from them. Like you mentionned it's too bad that radios only play one or maybe two hits of each band but there are LOTS and LOTS of great songs next to the most famous, it's like the top of an iceberg showing out of the water... The most beautiful moment is when you discover and realise you knew nothing about them. :)
You are so right re American radio stations' real narrow focus with Abba. True, Dancing Queen was by far their biggest hit, yet they had something like a dozen other top-twenty hits including 3 more top tens (take a chance on me and the winner takes it alland Waterloo) I was always so mad they gave their other songs short rift. Problem is that unlike most other bands, they seldom toured here and were not native English speakers, but their enormous talent lives on and they'll remain evergreen. No other band comes close except the Beatles. Btw most of their early videos were directed by lasse halstrom who had a unique visual style and went on to make it big in Hollywood. Glad you're on your Abba journey. Enjoying it with you.
I've never regretted buying all of their eight studio albums. It was well spent money. Above all with all the added bonus tracks which wasn't at the LP's. :-D

'Angeleyes', is another great song I think you'd like. Phil Collins seems to be another artist that it would seem a lot of people only know one song by, namelt, 'In The Air Tonight', but he did many great others, some that went totally under the radar.
Here is a shortcut to Abba's greatest songs: Their Album:"Voulez-vous?" (Would you like to?). The song itself is a real banger, "Does your mother know?", "As good as new" and many more. And these songs have live videos. A real treat.
Yeah those angles, I guess it's unique in Abba videos, no other presenter have used this technics as far as I know, not their original intention for sure but it nicely shows these ladies were physically perfect from whatever angle you looked at them. Agnetha was particularly cute from aside view, she has simply perfect face format.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned the meaning of this song : "The lyrics of Fernando are about two friends, one of whom is called Fernando. In America where they hardly did any tours,Dancing queen became the same thing as ABBA...which for you guys, was also,unfortunate...ABBA is everything but a one hit wonder...they proven that with music that is more timeless then any other, with numerous sucesses, with giant sales for their records...

Lately I have compared it to "Chiquitita" because they have similarities and contrasts (but I wait when You did "Chiquitita")
ABBA had already recorded "Dancing Queen" and it came from the success of "Mamma Mía"
It was the manager who convinced Them to record "Fernando" so as not to repeat the style (the brunette Frida had done it before on her solo album in Swedish and it was a success)
The manager was right and everything was a success, one after another in 1976, that gives ABBA three #1 consecutives in UK with:
Mamma Mía
Fernando
Dancing Queen
