Having just discovered your videos, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate finding someone who can articulate the science in a way that is helpful and invites us to think about the accuracy of some of the claims being made. For example: reasons why highlighting one sentence in an abstract might leave out important nuances, clarifying particular claims by dieticians, and constructively critiquing 'doctors' who are actually chiropractors! The difficulty for us laypeople lies in 'experts' who highlight the facts and then embellish with information that is not factual. Thanks for helping to call that out and clarify the science!
You and Dr. Stanfield are actually a couple of my go-to sources for summaries of health related literature. I would love if you would offer your opinion on his videos regarding hyaluronic acid. This is one of the few things I actually take and I was originally convinced by Dr. Stanfield.
Curcumin greatly reduced my stiffness, aches and pains from arthritis. It also greatly improved my Labrador's quality of life. His arthritis was so bad we thought we would have to put him down. Curcumin eliminated most of his arthritis and allowed him to grow old gracefully without pain.
I have yet to find ONE form of turmeric/curcumin that does not cause me very loose stool. I have tried them all.. Thoughts/advice? (have painful arthritis)

Just for added information. I'm a 73 y.o. male and I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitus several years ago and prescribed Salofalk as an ongoing medication for the condition. I had severe side effects from it,severe incompacitating headaches amongst them. Talking to my South African trained G.P. he suggested Curcumin as it was widely used in S.A. for digestive problems, and had been for many years. As you may know it's the active compound of Tumeric which is a staple of both Indian and African cooking. I began taking it out of desperation and within 48 hours noticed a positive difference, not just to my Ulcerative Colitus pain but my Fibromyalgia also. That was 4 years ago and I still take it with great effect, 1 tablet with breakfast. I should also mention it has also improved my skin, so I'm very happy with this natural substance. I recently attended a "checkup" with my specialist ( a Professor) and advised him what I was doing, his response surprised me when he said they had commenced trials of Curcumin as a non drug treatment for Ulcerative Colitus and many more digestive tract problems.
Coincidentally, I had seen Dr Stanfield's video on curcumin yesterday after seeing one of yours on a non-related topic. Naturally, when I began watching this video today of you analyzing Dr Stanfield's work I was keenly interested, having already found a similar and favourable approach in what you both do. Now, I am convinced. I quite like the fact that you have a physiology research orientation, and that Dr Stanfield is is a hands-on medical doctor. Just a suggestion, but might you both corroborate on some videos (and maybe over time even a book - or two! ). You both share an intense respect for, and willingness to delve into, the science. Your perspective is that of the researcher, his is that of relating the science to the care of patients in a good way. Just my thoughts for what they're worth. I have much respect for you both. Thank you for what you do.

I appreciate the level of detail you go into with your reviews of studies. Studies are great to see potential benefits of activities or supplements but at the end of the day, taking a supplement or doing an activity will make no difference if the person is not incorporating other lifestyle and nutritional changes. So many people see these studies and start taking a supplement or doing intermittent fasting and then can’t understand why it isn’t working. Mean while, they are still eating processed foods and not getting in enough nutrients. I see this constantly as a certified nutritional practitioner. It takes planning and work to maintain health, it doesn’t happen with one thing or many things that people have tried and they have a cabinet full of half used supplement bottles.

I wonder if this is the video that you recommended to me over on the GlyNAC video. I didn’t hear anything on chronic pain other than osteoporosis for a couple of minutes. I’ll continue to search. I’ve been taking Turmeric for just a few days. (No side effects so far) I’m searching for alternatives to opioids and ibuprofen, I’m sick of taking prescription medication for 35 years. (Lisinopril, Valium, lexapro, Atorvastatin, Gabapentin, methedone, and for Type 2 diabetes, Metformin) My interest in GlyNAC is more about repairing DNA due to stress, excess medication, as well as all the other benefits that might help someone about to turn 70. Appearance wise, I’m told I look 48-50, no wrinkles, no loose skin, no double chin, etc. I’m looking to rid myself of as much internal damage of aging and trauma, and not masking them with the litany of medications I’m on. I’m truly sorry for such a long comment (twice now), I think of all the people on UA-cam talking about internal medicine and supplements, I trust you the most. ✌🏻
Hey Physionic, the "Curcuminoids exert glucose-lowering" also says that: "the two groups were compared using independent samples t-test and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), respectively. ANCOVA was adjusted for baseline values of age, gender, smoking history, lipid-lowering drug use, physical activity level, blood pressure, diabetes duration, and drug treatment. " The variations you see in the placebo group can be random fluctuations. True that the paper do not show boxplots and comparisons of the various measurements, neither the multivariate Cox regression plot, but I think the conclusions still hold.
I must give my anecdotal evidence. Curcumin has helped my OA pain significantly. The biggest benefit is it lessened my stiffness AND pain! I am a believer in Curcumin.😊

If you are interested I'm curcumin I don't rely on statistics only on testing myself. 1. With 1209 mg curcumin with pipperine all joint related pain gone or if they reappear due to overloading with exercise they sooner or later disappear after temporary increased dose. This goes on fir years. 2. In the border of insuline resistance hba1c 5.6 to 5.7% for years no effect whatsoever 3. No weight loss unless dieting 4. Home index only dropped by 50% with berberine lowering insulin level with no impact on hba1c
For the arthritis combined effect: You need to consider the huge confidence intervals (around 5:20). It's not clear at all that there is an interaction. Could be just noise.
Hmmm...? Combination of Glucosamine (which I take - Osteo Biflex - and have been for a long time) and Curcumin (which I take - started a few years ago with a really good response in the joints of my (guitar playing) hands) and a decreases effectiveness. What might you suggest? I was thinking maybe I should try two or three weeks on one and then two or three weeks on the other? ... greater 6 months? ... alternate on each day? Thanks for any observations you might be able to provide!
To be fair, Dr. Stanfield isn’t claiming that curcumin out performs medication - he is simply reporting research that he’s read. The authors of the studies are the ones claiming the benefits.

You may want to view my recent post about my experience with Curcumin over the last 4 years. I read some time ago that doseage amounts of Tumeric had to be kept in check as 50% of it purchased in the U.S. had high levels of lead contaminent. I understand Curcumin ( the active compound of Turmeric) doesn't have the same issue. All the best.
Great analysis! He no longer takes turmeric/curcumin in his supplement stack. I forgot why. I like Dr Stanfield's earlier stuff more so than some of his other content because of personal bias and sometimes repeating the same thing over and over again in various videos ;). That was one of the reasons I went to your channel. I do in fact prefer getting the molecular biology behind the clinical aspects rather than just blanket statements . E.g. if there is one thing he could not explain - it would be why a fair number of male followers were losing their hair after taking creatine but the hair loss stopped afterward they stopped it. I would be curious to know the reason, as Dr Stanfield brushed that under the carpet by just whipping up another metaanalysis saying that does not happen - even though in some ppl it clearly does. The other thing that he stated was inaccurate was protein RDA. It really depends on your activity status, age as well as if you have CKD. I do actually prefer your nuanced approach so thank you for bringing more clarity.
Creatine has long been linked to premature balding in men, but tends to only happen in men with a high level of alpha reductase in their scalp. The research is still unclear, however.

@@Physionic I recently heard that its actually disproven to cause hairloss as it apparently was only based on one study, and the actual reason was, people mostly using it when also trying to gain muscle, so its actually from the increase in testosterone from training, instead of the creatine itself. I've tried taking turmeric for rheumatoid inflammation and to stabilize blood sugar, but quickly found it is like all other spicy foods - my mouth can handle it, my digestive tract cannot. I get severe diarrhea as my body tries to flush that irritating stuff away, even at small doses. I doubt curcumin would be any different.

Question: @5:20, the confidence intervals all overlap. How can one conclude, sans further comparative tests of the means, variances, etc, that these results are significantly different?
I like Brad but the way he stands perfectly straight in his videos and speaks straight at you, barely moving other than alternating his left and right hands, is terrifying. I have nightmares where he is standing at me talking about supplements.
Oral diclofenac is NOT the first option for knee osteoarthritis -- TOPICAL diclofenac is appropriate. Topical diclofenac does not have the gastric side effects that cause patients to stop taking oral diclofenac. I have a bit of anecdotal evidence... I had been taking curcumin for years and years -- not for anything to do with arthritis, but rather for possible anti-cancer effects. It did not reduce arthritis pain -- that continued progressing. At about 15 years post diagnosis, with no treatment, it got bad enough that I would be in severe pain after walking even a block. I asked to be referred to sports medicine. We discussed physical therapy, appropriate shoes, etc. And then the doctor said, almost offhand, oh by the way, you should be using this, and wrote a prescription for topical diclofenac, which at the time was not over the counter in the US. I sneered -- that's "joint cream", I thought, not enough can possibly get into the joint. But I was wrong. In two weeks, there was significant improvement. I am now back to leading hikes, and do not have to use the diclofenac nearly as frequently as the initial schedule.
Ive watched both videos and both of you did not mention dosages, nor the fact that its bioavailabilty is so poor and it needs piperine, found in bla k pepper to become bio available to have significant benefit
Your observation about curcumin and weight loss reminds me of the years I spent on a weight loss site where so many woman felt so righteous about drinking water while they also reported over and over how they did not stick to calorie limits, constantly failing because of trying to keep their most seductive binge foods in their diets. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but learning that obesity researchers hit on a surefire way to get rats to gain weight was to feed then basically an ultra-processed diet helped me get a lot less tolerant of those foods. I got a lot more bang for my buck in terms of satiety. I've been adding curcumin for years and have noticed none of the supposed benefits, but I like it with curry, cumin, and other Indian spices so I figure I will hedge my bets.
Not sure why you got such a bad ratio on this video. It's great that you evaluate the accuracy of others and Dr Stanfield comes out looking pretty good here. Interestingly, yourself and Stanfield are my two main go to health/suppliment info sources on YT, so it was fun to see this vid.
Love to know your opinion on a cancer treatment via lower igf-1, methionine, and glucose by a combination of OMAD, and a plant based keto diet (almond protein to lower methionine). Yes, not sustainable, but neither is cancer, and will never get a randomized control study for this but the mechanics or the "how" and "why" are easy to understand.
The residual of turmeric after curcumin has been removed is as good as curcumin in treating problems. Turmeric by itself is far more effective and a hell of a lot cheaper. But the drug companies can't make much money out of turmeric which is available cheaply from supermarkets.
for arthritis: were the dosages of the two tested substances (curcumin, pharmaceutical) the same in the "single substance" and "both substances" groups? because decreasing the dosage under a certain threshold might cause one substance (or both) to be much less active, thereby producing a lesser combined result than in the group where only ONE of the two substances was used, but that, *above* the threshold.
I used to watch Dr Stanfield, until I found he was cherry picking lines from the studies he was referencing in order to draw the conclusion he wanted rather than what the paper actually said, with the paper actually drawing the opposite conclusion that he presents. Hard to take him seriously after that.
Great pickup and I am sure they all do that in one way or another. Even just by the study or meta analysis they pick. Meta analyses imo are a big trap, totally influenced or corrupted by the studies they pick. Sadly, the biggest weakness of this channel and Gils channel where so many viewers are drawn like flys to the ‘unbiased’ science is that there is no guarantee that any study hasn’t been manipulated or faked eveb in small but significant ways and as one bit of supporting evidence for that i offer Wiley books recently paying hundreds of millions of dollars for a brand that housed a treasure trove of medical science research journals and eventually they retired the Hindawi brand because its contents were so untrustworthy INCLUDING MANIPULATED PEER REVIEW. If anyone thinks those were an outlier they havent been paying attention to human nature and the self interested way so many people operate. Of course Gil and Nick and those who base their channel on presenting research analyses will deny or minimise these problems but the truth Is it can all be manipulated. I once met a doctor at a wedding and in the course of our conversation he said to not take statins, he had seen the raw data. I cant say factually he was correct but when he went to get a drink his wife said that he was on the NZ official panel for approving meds which might explain how he had seen the raw data. The idea that research financed by those with a financial interest in its outcome can be regarded as a priori trustworthy makes life easy but is totally unlikely. Why do I still watch? I watch a broad variety of channels as it is the best info we can get and I have to make the best I can of it

Can you do a breakdown of Dr Stanfield's tear down of intermittent fasting - i feel as though he's quite biased against it - which is fine, but i feel like he's missing out on a lot of points just to suit himself. I'm a fan of TRE/IF and its worked for me, but i wouldn't mind seeing dissenting opinions with decent evidence to back their claims up. I fear he has not done that.

I have tried several brands and several forms of curcumin and have taken curcumin for several months: absolutely no effects at all on pain and osteoarthritis. ☹️
In addition, there may be changes due to the Hawthorne Effect, which some people may consider part of placebo effect. I think they're different and that's why I added this comment, I realize I'm watching this video a year after its release and this comment may be viewed by only a few people, but I've only recently fournd your channel.
Question: It appears many of the statistical numbers being compared in the charts have widely overlapping confidence intervals. I.e., the "+ or -" numbers are so big that when you actually look at the range covered by the statistic, there's no significant difference between the statics being compared. Am I reading that wrong?
Overlapping CIs aren't always an indicating there is no difference. Also, some studies report SD instead of SEM or CI, which can make it seem like there's significant overlap when the SEM value might not overlap. Great question.

You think the Curcumin and glucosamine conflicted somehow? I doubt it. I think it's just that it was a subjective measurement, with people reporting if they felt better, and it was just the subjective nature of the whole thing.
What about a low carb, higher protein diet along with curcumim ...seems like that would be a better approach than going straight to meds to manage blood sugar issues
Pain is a subjective measure and therefore highly susceptible of being affected by the placebo effect (or anti-placebo). Therefore the results of this study are necessarily week.
I appreciated your thorough analysis. It appears that you and Dr. Stanfield are both ethical and good sources of information. Your audiences may be a bit different though. I started following Dr Rhonda Patrick but I was very turned off by her interview with Tony Robbins that felt more infomercial than science backed information. Thanks for your content!
30 years ago my grandmother told me about curcumin and its inflammatory effects. She is not PhD and knew that from her travels to Asia. Now it is a big revelation. BTW I do not like Brad Steinfield's commercially oriented attitude despite all scientific wrap ups.

@@eugeniebreida. Try mixing curcumin with oil. I use Mct oil. The goal is to get it absorbed and out of the gut.

Curcumin isn't discussed for diabetes but merely as a bloodthinner and anti- inflammatory agent here in Switzerland ...🤩

Combination of Glucosamine (which I take - Osteo Biflex - and have been for a long time) and Curcumin (which I take - started a few years ago with a really good response in the joints of my (guitar playing) hands) and a decreases effectiveness.
What might you suggest? I was thinking maybe I should try two or three weeks on one and then two or three weeks on the other? ... greater 6 months? ... alternate on each day?

To be fair, Dr. Stanfield isn’t claiming that curcumin out performs medication - he is simply reporting research that he’s read. The authors of the studies are the ones claiming the benefits.
Recently there’s been a lot of reporting on turmeric’s high levels of heavy metals.
The balancing act seems truly daunting.

You may want to view my recent post about my experience with Curcumin over the last 4 years. I read some time ago that doseage amounts of Tumeric had to be kept in check as 50% of it purchased in the U.S. had high levels of lead contaminent. I understand Curcumin ( the active compound of Turmeric) doesn't have the same issue. All the best.
I'm no doc but NAC is useful on heavy metal chelation and is also anti-inflammatory

Great analysis! He no longer takes turmeric/curcumin in his supplement stack. I forgot why.
I like Dr Stanfield's earlier stuff more so than some of his other content because of personal bias and sometimes repeating the same thing over and over again in various videos ;). That was one of the reasons I went to your channel. I do in fact prefer getting the molecular biology behind the clinical aspects rather than just blanket statements . E.g. if there is one thing he could not explain - it would be why a fair number of male followers were losing their hair after taking creatine but the hair loss stopped afterward they stopped it. I would be curious to know the reason, as Dr Stanfield brushed that under the carpet by just whipping up another metaanalysis saying that does not happen - even though in some ppl it clearly does.
The other thing that he stated was inaccurate was protein RDA. It really depends on your activity status, age as well as if you have CKD. I do actually prefer your nuanced approach so thank you for bringing more clarity.
Creatine has long been linked to premature balding in men, but tends to only happen in men with a high level of alpha reductase in their scalp. The research is still unclear, however.

@@Physionic I recently heard that its actually disproven to cause hairloss as it apparently was only based on one study, and the actual reason was, people mostly using it when also trying to gain muscle, so its actually from the increase in testosterone from training, instead of the creatine itself.

I've tried taking turmeric for rheumatoid inflammation and to stabilize blood sugar, but quickly found it is like all other spicy foods - my mouth can handle it, my digestive tract cannot.
I get severe diarrhea as my body tries to flush that irritating stuff away, even at small doses.
I doubt curcumin would be any different.
I have yet to find ONE form of turmeric/curcumin that does not cause me very loose stool. I have tried them all..
Thoughts/advice?

Question: @5:20, the confidence intervals all overlap. How can one conclude, sans further comparative tests of the means, variances, etc, that these results are significantly different?
I like Brad but the way he stands perfectly straight in his videos and speaks straight at you, barely moving other than alternating his left and right hands, is terrifying. I have nightmares where he is standing at me talking about supplements.

Interesting analysis but needs subtitles. The American accent makes it a bit hard to follow.
Oral diclofenac is NOT the first option for knee osteoarthritis -- TOPICAL diclofenac is appropriate. Topical diclofenac does not have the gastric side effects that cause patients to stop taking oral diclofenac. I have a bit of anecdotal evidence... I had been taking curcumin for years and years -- not for anything to do with arthritis, but rather for possible anti-cancer effects. It did not reduce arthritis pain -- that continued progressing. At about 15 years post diagnosis, with no treatment, it got bad enough that I would be in severe pain after walking even a block. I asked to be referred to sports medicine. We discussed physical therapy, appropriate shoes, etc. And then the doctor said, almost offhand, oh by the way, you should be using this, and wrote a prescription for topical diclofenac, which at the time was not over the counter in the US. I sneered -- that's "joint cream", I thought, not enough can possibly get into the joint. But I was wrong. In two weeks, there was significant improvement. I am now back to leading hikes, and do not have to use the diclofenac nearly as frequently as the initial schedule.
Ive watched both videos and both of you did not mention dosages, nor the fact that its bioavailabilty is so poor and it needs piperine, found in bla k pepper to become bio available to have significant benefit
Your observation about curcumin and weight loss reminds me of the years I spent on a weight loss site where so many woman felt so righteous about drinking water while they also reported over and over how they did not stick to calorie limits, constantly failing because of trying to keep their most seductive binge foods in their diets. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but learning that obesity researchers hit on a surefire way to get rats to gain weight was to feed then basically an ultra-processed diet helped me get a lot less tolerant of those foods. I got a lot more bang for my buck in terms of satiety. I've been adding curcumin for years and have noticed none of the supposed benefits, but I like it with curry, cumin, and other Indian spices so I figure I will hedge my bets.
Not sure why you got such a bad ratio on this video. It's great that you evaluate the accuracy of others and Dr Stanfield comes out looking pretty good here. Interestingly, yourself and Stanfield are my two main go to health/suppliment info sources on YT, so it was fun to see this vid.
Love to know your opinion on a cancer treatment via lower igf-1, methionine, and glucose by a combination of OMAD, and a plant based keto diet (almond protein to lower methionine). Yes, not sustainable, but neither is cancer, and will never get a randomized control study for this but the mechanics or the "how" and "why" are easy to understand.
What about the very high oxolate levels of curcumin?

The residual of turmeric after curcumin has been removed is as good as curcumin in treating problems. Turmeric by itself is far more effective and a hell of a lot cheaper. But the drug companies can't make much money out of turmeric which is available cheaply from supermarkets.
Could you invite or analyze Dr Paul Saladino's video on tumeric? His video is titled 'Controversial Thoughts: Tumeric is BS!'

for arthritis: were the dosages of the two tested substances (curcumin, pharmaceutical) the same in the "single substance" and "both substances" groups? because decreasing the dosage under a certain threshold might cause one substance (or both) to be much less active, thereby producing a lesser combined result than in the group where only ONE of the two substances was used, but that, *above* the threshold.

I used to watch Dr Stanfield, until I found he was cherry picking lines from the studies he was referencing in order to draw the conclusion he wanted rather than what the paper actually said, with the paper actually drawing the opposite conclusion that he presents. Hard to take him seriously after that.
Great pickup and I am sure they all do that in one way or another. Even just by the study or meta analysis they pick. Meta analyses imo are a big trap, totally influenced or corrupted by the studies they pick. Sadly, the biggest weakness of this channel and Gils channel where so many viewers are drawn like flys to the ‘unbiased’ science is that there is no guarantee that any study hasn’t been manipulated or faked eveb in small but significant ways and as one bit of supporting evidence for that i offer Wiley books recently paying hundreds of millions of dollars for a brand that housed a treasure trove of medical science research journals and eventually they retired the Hindawi brand because its contents were so untrustworthy INCLUDING MANIPULATED PEER REVIEW.
If anyone thinks those were an outlier they havent been paying attention to human nature and the self interested way so many people operate. Of course Gil and Nick and those who base their channel on presenting research analyses will deny or minimise these problems but the truth Is it can all be manipulated. I once met a doctor at a wedding and in the course of our conversation he said to not take statins, he had seen the raw data. I cant say factually he was correct but when he went to get a drink his wife said that he was on the NZ official panel for approving meds which might explain how he had seen the raw data. The idea that research financed by those with a financial interest in its outcome can be regarded as a priori trustworthy makes life easy but is totally unlikely. Why do I still watch? I watch a broad variety of channels as it is the best info we can get and I have to make the best I can of it

I'll have to see if i cant dig up the specific paper/papers i was referring to... i can't remember off the top of my head what the specific instances were, but I'll get back to you when i figure it out.. i still watch Dr Stanfields content from time to time, but i take it with a grain of salt.

Can you do a breakdown of Dr Stanfield's tear down of intermittent fasting - i feel as though he's quite biased against it - which is fine, but i feel like he's missing out on a lot of points just to suit himself.
I'm a fan of TRE/IF and its worked for me, but i wouldn't mind seeing dissenting opinions with decent evidence to back their claims up. I fear he has not done that.

Question: It appears many of the statistical numbers being compared in the charts have widely overlapping confidence intervals. I.e., the "+ or -" numbers are so big that when you actually look at the range covered by the statistic, there's no significant difference between the statics being compared. Am I reading that wrong?
Overlapping CIs aren't always an indicating there is no difference. Also, some studies report SD instead of SEM or CI, which can make it seem like there's significant overlap when the SEM value might not overlap. Great question.

28 days for curcumin to take full effect - it could easily take 28 days for a doctors appt to get that prescription in the patients hand.

You think the Curcumin and glucosamine conflicted somehow? I doubt it. I think it's just that it was a subjective measurement, with people reporting if they felt better, and it was just the subjective nature of the whole thing.
What about a low carb, higher protein diet along with curcumim ...seems like that would be a better approach than going straight to meds to manage blood sugar issues

Pain is a subjective measure and therefore highly susceptible of being affected by the placebo effect (or anti-placebo). Therefore the results of this study are necessarily week.

30 years ago my grandmother told me about curcumin and its inflammatory effects. She is not PhD and knew that from her travels to Asia. Now it is a big revelation. BTW I do not like Brad Steinfield's commercially oriented attitude despite all scientific wrap ups.
