Always knew the burning plants by watering it in hot weather was a myth; you just simply give the roots a good hosing or watering. I had a bloke come up to me a year or so ago when I was watering plants in the Australian heat, telling me it was not good. I was explaining to him that they needed it in much the same way you need water after a long day of cricket, and that it was a myth. He roared, was an experienced gardener, knew more, and I told him to just go and knock his bat in and pee off! Love your work Garden Ninja, by far one of the best gardening channels on UA-cam!!!
Top tips Lee. Barry is enjoying the new garden beds i see! Watering isnt too bad an issue at the moment, it is aphids and flea beetle that are running riot this year! All my erysimums have been ravaged by flea beetle and there seems to be an increase in aphids.
Hey Nathan, Great to hear from you. Yes, Barrys loving the new garden; not so much the heatwave! Aphids have run riot with me this year too. I think it was that mad hot February we had? I use washing up liquid in a sprayer. Melts their waxy bodies and basically suffocates them. Nasty I know. Other than that its encouraging ladybirds. Sorry to hear you've had flea beetle too! What a year. I'm sure next year will be better! :-) Always the optimist!
Good advice mate! This heat wave is a tad on the crazy side... meant to be hotter still tomorrow. Been giving my plants a good soaking these past few days... takes a while when you have a big area but they look healthy so must be doing it right. All day in the garden the other day as I have a week off work. Happy Marc! 😁👍 take care mate. And loved your sunshine garden for rhs tatton!
Hey Marc. Sounds like your gardens coming up roses mate! Ohh a week off! I could do with one of those right now hahah my entire body aches after Tatton. Was such a good show. I’m glad you liked the garden. Think I may need to nip out and buy a paddling pool for tonight. I’ve got sunburn on sunburn!! #tanlinenightmare
Thanks Al! Most definitely. Mulching twice a year is worth its weight in gold. Great to help reduce the effects of a heat wave too! Mulching is the key to reduced weeds and watering so it’s win win! It’s also a really addictive word to say...mulch...mulch!!
Either compost or horse/farm well rotted manure depending on whether the plants need high feed (manures best for that). I apply it in Autumn and then for some beds in spring too!
Hmm, Aloe Vera are used to warm and dry conditions for most of the time with an occasional downpour. Overwatering usually causes them to rot. If you can tweet me a picture I may be able to help more? You can also take cuttings really easily with Aloes too and let them root in a glass of water before transferring them to some free-draining compost. Twitter handle - @Garden_Ninja
How often should I water the garden in this heat with no rain? Been using the hose every 3 days but it doesn't seem enough to me. Should potted plants be every day?
Hi Richard. In heatwaves and hot weather pots will need watering every day. As they wick away moisture very quickly! Try using saucers underneath the pots to help retain in moisture! Hope that helps. 🥷🤘🌿 Lee
Hi Richard. If they’re perennials and been in for two or more years they should survive. I never water lawn. It’s a waste of water and lawns one of the most toughest plants so will come back. So don’t waste the water or effort. Happy watering! 🥷🤘🌿
Hi, I keep been told I’m not watering my grass enough but I feel so guilt wasting the water on the lawn when so many haven’t got water to drink......will I kill my grass by not watering it over the summer
I never water my lawn as I find it completely pointless most of the time in a heat wave. Give grass is so resilient. Sure it will crisp up and look a mess. Most of the water evaporates in a heat wave or drains through to more parched underground earth. Your time and water is better spent coming out of a heatwave reviving your lawn. Happy Gardening. Lee
Garden Ninja Ltd you’re just a star thanks again mate. It’s a difficult decision but I feel a lot more comfortable not watering now with a clear understanding of why the lawn really doesn’t benefit. Happy gardening!

@@Gardenninja Next year will be grand! Washing up liquid sounds like a plan. Even the birds couldnt eat them all. More ladybirds are always welcome!
I guess I am lucky that I usually have millions of ladybirds that enjoy my giant Zantedeschia
@@TheKruxed given all the new plants and pollinators I've seen this year I'm hoping next year for a bumper crop of aphid loving Ladybirds too!!
Thanks lee.👍

Hey Nana. Thanks so much. Yes very surreal seeing myself on TV. I think they could do with a bit more Garden Ninja!! 😜🌱🌻

@@nanabusterd Ahh maybe! I was there last year and won a pretty amazing award. Maybe a year of less stress is in order hahaha! ;-)
Great tips and myth-busting Lee, thank you. What's your thoughts on mulch for water/moisture retention?

great tips, as usual, but could you keep the music down at the same level as your voice, thanks
Thanks Gilles. I’ll have a fiddle around next time to reduce the volume. Thanks for the feedback!
@@Gardenninja no worries, mate 👍
Hi Garden Ninja, any tips on watering Aloe Vera plants, I keep mine indoors but they seem to be ‘thinning’, do they need more water?

My tip... move to Scotland. Heatwaves are rare and rain is never far away!
Damn it! How did I miss that one?! 😂👍

@@Gardenninja What about the plants in the ground? My lawn is dried out too. Should I be hosing everything everyday? Feels like I should.

Zake Ebanks also I hold off from cutting it during heat waves. Most of time the lawn can survive 3-4 weeks of no water. Happy gardening! Lee
