The Polish fans getting the ŠČ perfectly, LOVE
We simply have this sound in Polish too, so it's not hard for us. Only, true to the Polish tradition of complicating things unnecessarily, we spell it with four consonants: "szcz".

@@ivanaverovski6137 Ś and Ć are already taken by softer sounds (IPA [t͡ɕ] and [ɕ] respectively), and why weren't Š and Č taken to represent the harder sounds for which SZ (IPA [ʂ], š or ш in other Slavic languages) and CZ (IPA [ʈ͡ʂ], č or ч) are used - I have no idea.
I tried to google it, and all I was able to find was that this spelling was popularized and standardized by the Polish printers in late medieval period already, and it stayed like that since then. My hunch would be that since s, c and z are already very popular letters in the Polish alphabet, the printing houses simply had enough units of each to build sz and cz with them, whereas adding š nad č would demand introducing whole new letters and carving additional fonts just for them.
@@ivanaverovski6137 Czech and Serbo-Croatian simplified their spellings by using caron/hacek, but Polish maintains the digraphs (although Polish also uses other diacritics not present in other Slavic languages).

The point is: why didn't Poland use š or č in the first place, or never introduced it later on? There was a HUGE spelling overhaul of Polish in 1936, and yet they kept the digraphs. I would really like a language historial explain it, cause I was not able to find anything about it online, and it is actually fascinating.

Szczy is actually a word in Polish and it means He is pissing (rather szcza but who cares), or It is raining.

i just knew it, that polish people will get the song and whole coreography. not many poles know, but way back in former yugoslavia there was band called Azra and they dedicate their one song to poland, polish workers and polish people. it is called poljska u mome srcu ( poland in my heart), whole song is about lech walesa and russia sending tanks to poland to ''kill'' solidarnost and workers protests..
Yes, it was croatian band " Azra" from Zagreb and their frontman Branimir " Johnny" Stulic. 👌

Poland, Slowakia, Czechia, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia and even Serbia, there are also Georgians, Azerbaijans and Armenians who despise 'little vile psichopath', huge Croatian (and ex-Yugoslavia) diaspora in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Australia and Scandinavia.

I think it is popular because of the message. War is at the Polish threshold. Poland understands what it means.

I'd say 80% of the lyrics make at least some intuitive sense for the Polish native speakers (which is a happy coincidence, as Croatian and Polish are not that close to one another, one being Southern and the other Western Slavic language).
Also a lot of the symbolism used in the video/live version is easy to decode for Poles (e.g. the singer costume clearly reads as "queer satire on Stalin", the Lenin/Rasputin nuke holder is also obvious, the choir ripping off Alexandrov Ensamble, etc.).
Anti-Kremlin sentiments are also - understandably - very high in Poland at the moment (and it's not like there weren't anti-Russia/anti-Soviet resentments in the country before that, even if dormant). The country also has a long tradition of both stingy political satire and joke/protest songs with an actual deeper social or political meaning. On top of that, the song is simply great musically.

As for the "y" - this way it simply becomes a word. And - funny enough - it has a meaning in Polish, as "szczy" it is a slang version of "szcza" (3rd person singular of "szczać", "to piss"). And if you can add another level of making fun of Putin, Poles will definitely take it.

I checked out their releases from the 80s and 90s, and they are a very talented post-punk band. As an American I never heard of them. Thanks to Eurovision I have discovered Let 3, although not my favorite Eurovision entry by far, but I appreciate their roots

Diaspora on Ireland can Polish, Croatian and Ucraine
No, only countries with songs in semi 1 plus Germany, France and Italy. Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands and Norway has a huge Polish diaspora, so you can count on that. There is also Serbia, Czechia, Latvia, Moldova, Finland and Azerbaijan in the 1st semi that may support an anti-Putin song.
