    Thanks for such an in depth comparison of both generations! As an American I don't really know much about 00 models but the GWR 28XX is my favorite British steam locomotive and I've always wanted a model of mine, just was never quite sure which was the better of the two Hornby locos for my needs. Hey Sam, I can happily say your channel has pushed me to find my old model trains. Found my very first Train set which was the Inter City train set (black, white and red Livery). Need to see if it works after 15+ years of sitting dormant. Tidied my loft and cleaned everything up and bought myself the Hornby Tornado Express, Flight of the Mallard & the Duchess of Sutherland so I can make a nice setup. Really excited for it :D

    Very interesting video Sam. What needs to be remembered is that way back in the 1990's and earlier production methods were nothing like what they are now. Therefore any of the manufacturers could only do what they could with what they had. I look forward to your next video as always. Be well and keep safe, regards Gary.

    Thanks for another insightful video Sam. Interesting reflection towards the end on whether model locos are toys. My initial instinct is to say ‘no’, but then my young son probably gets as much enjoyment out of them (if not more). He can operate a basic dc controller reasonably (with supervision), and I purposely bought a dcc system with a one loco extra easy to use handset so he can operate a train when he’s a little older.
    Although I tend to think of them as working models, and not toys, the whole idea of something that brings you joy is a good one that fits the bill. That is their basic function and purpose, so I think you’re probably right Sam. Certainly made me think! Looking forward to more great videos from you.

    Another fascinating comparison Sam, and the points you bring up in this review are absolutely spot on. I recently purchased a Black version of the 28XX and it did indeed look ed a little 'Toy' like, however simply painting all the chrome parts , loco wheels and tender wheels Matt Black made a big difference to the look of the loco. If like me your running an oval layout, then you just can see all the detail that some modelers crave for these days, and the delicate build of these very detailed newer locos seems a compromise too far when the cost can be four times what I paid for mine...Keep up the great work...Bob

I have recently replaced the tiny cog on the Ringfield motor with a brass one. I love this loco. it may not be as sophisticated as new ones but is beautiful. Cost me £57 brand new from Hattons.

    Very cool video! I have some locomotives which are the same locomotive made by the same manufacuters, but the drive assembly is quite different!
    10:11 Tyco made a "chug chug" box car that had a roller with some balls in it that moved when the box car did. The good thing about it that it did a proper slowed down chuffing when the train slowed down or started up!
    Even just a basic Bachmann USA steam locomotive has a smoke unit in it, but it isn't synchronized with the motor! (The one I have is from 2010, and I've never put smoke in it!)

    In addition to others saying there's been a transition from toy-like model railways to far more discerning models and modellers. I remember Synchrosmoke (and also the boiler glow): to a lad of 7, 8, 9 as I was then, they were just amazing to see, even if - with hindsight - they weren't particularly realistic. With Synchrosmoke, as you say Sam, it was dirty and messy, and, as exciting as it was, it ruined plastic bodies, sleepers and rolling stock wheels as inevitably the locomotive dripped the oil that was burned to achieve the effect all over the track. Trains would therefore struggle to pull anything for all sorts of oil reasons. Also I remember a smell which mums didn't tend to like.
    In general, which I am confident you would acknowledge, comparisons though can be drawn between your video between the model of today to the one of 20 years ago: when I was young, even perhaps with my father, in comparative terms, I was looking at the model of 20, 30, 40 years ago in the same light as the modern locomotive you are comparing with it today (if that makes sense). In other words, what you see as the model of today, I, and my father, saw in the model those years ago because up until then, they had been even more clunky and unrealistic - though to a lad of my age back then, they were the height of excitementment and realism.
    I do make 1/48 model kits and the same could be said of those. Modellers are far more discerning and demanding, and that's good, because the plane models I build now are miles ahead of the clunky and inaccurate things of the 70s.
    Fantastic to see such accurate models now though, thank goodness, and if I had the room, I'd not think twice of starting a model railway again.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 років тому

      I agree - Syncrosmoke was truly remarkable - and still is I think, but definitely not practical! That's also true - the likes of Hornby dublo would have looked the same as the Old 28xx in the 1990s, without a doubt!

    Interesting comparison, Sam. Is really impresive that the two versions of the 28xx, have so much difference in a short time. Its a little bit understandable why in the modern one's firebox doesn't light up or blows smoke like the original model . The reason is propably because the original its tender driven, while the modern is loco driven, and there's no space lights and smoke. And I agree with you, about the hobby being more for children nowadays, (with the exception of the Thomas models). I like both versions, since they are enjoyable each one in its own way. Anyways very good review, I'll see you soon.

    I like your philosophy regarding the true value if any given model. Back in the day us serious modellers bought these older hornby versions and with romfotd wheels, improved mechs, extra detailing and new paint, we produced models we were very happy with. But others were happy enough with the stock hornby item. This meant that prices were at a level that suited all. Nowadays rhe market has gone over to the serious modeller and we have these lovely rtr models. At one stage I thought that loco kitbuilding and revamping rtr models was going to die out. Sadly, prices are now at a level that kitbuilding is very much a viable option. Especually given the hit and miss chassis design with some suppliers of rtr locos. In addition, a well put together kit can be worth much more than its' purchase cost. Maybe you should review a quality kitbuilt loco by someone like DJH?

    I have just picked up one the older tender drive GWR 2800's in pristine condition. It is one of the last to come out of China with blackened valve gear and finer scale wheels and it is a vast improvement All for £70. Granted there are no sprung buffers but I see that as a small price to pay for what otherwise is an excellent locomotive.

  • @Steamer96
    @Steamer96 6 років тому +5

    Gained: Better detail, realism, DCC, slower speeds, & realistic sound.
    Lost: Robust, affordability, incredible power, made in their respective countries.
    Note* Yes i know some locomotives back then were made in Asia but, we still had plenty of e'm made in the America and Europe.
    These include Athearn, Bowser, Mantua, Stewart, Marklin, & Wrenn .

      Hi, I recently looked at a price list from 1980 and found things very expensive really, which corresponds with my memories of not being able to afford the trains I really wanted back then.
      For example, a turning table costs about 2,5 times what it did back then, but inflation has been much higher than that and wages have gone up even more.
      Those prices were for German manufacturers, by the way.

    Well, I would have to go for the newer model, I have a certain dislike to tender drives. You are right that they are toys, I like a reasonable amount of details but am not fussed about painted cabs as I can do that myself if I wish. What I do like are working lights and I loved the firebox on the old engine. Of course I am not what would be called a serious modeler; after all my railway is made the exact size to fit under a bed so I can push it out the way if I wish. I find it relaxing to watch the trains go after a day at work.

    If I could just HAVE one version, likely the newer one. If I could only BUY one, well, that may be a different story.
    There's definitely something to be said for something being robust enough you can hand it to a 6 year old and know it'll come back mostly intact... closest thing I have to that are the Bachmann Thomas models and as tough as they may be I still don't like risking them considering the replacement cost (and questionable motors)

    I had hoped for a comparison of haulage power. I did my own and the 2010 one managed 18 wagons with a lot of slipping and the 1990 one hauled 36. Up a steep hill 2010 managed 6 and the 1990 managed 17. What is worse there is no space for extra weight in the 2010.

    The 1990s models were a lot better detailed than the 1950s and 1960s models.
    My only real concern with the old version of the 28XX is the tender drive. I don't run mine because tender-driven locomotives are banned from my model railway. Most of the details on the new model are great, but you don't notice them on a moving loco.
    I was very familiar with the prototype locos in the 50s, but I can't remember those details, and wouldn't notice them if they weren't there. Internal cab details are great, but, again, you cannot see them most of the time.

    Here in singapore we have quite a serious lack of model trains,back in the 2000's there were quite a lot of hobby shops around the country selling bachmann hornby and other brands but when 2007 rolled around something called the IPHONE appeared and everyone got one and basically got addicted to them and suddenly no one was into railway modeling anymore and lots and lots of hobby shops closed and by the time 2010 came basically model railways were dead in singapore and the only way to get trains and other items now is to buy them online but the prices are crazy for example the cheapest santa's express online now in singapore is around $160 crazy right? Also I think we need bullman Christmas decorations that would be interesting.

    I am not sure I prefer the fine details like the thin handrails on modern loco's. They break off very easily with you hardly noticing it, as I've experienced a few times.
    I do like the cab detailing, though, but I also like the gimmicks the old loco's had. They brought a bit of theatre that seems to have been replaced by a zeal for similarity to the prototype.
    But then, I suppose my view is just one among many different ones.
    For example, I also don't much like sound on OO scale loco's because the speakers are too small to represent the bass tones, so suddenly it's me who wants similarity to the prototype!
    It was interesting to watch and think about the differences, though, so thanks again for another illuminating vid.

    Great video, Sam. One of your best me thinks. Comparisons of old and new is something I'd like to see more of. Definetly is not done often. I have started liking the older stuff again as they are oodles cheaper and can be upgraded.
    You are right on with computer games. Loads cheaper, less frustrating, less skill and space needed, seen as less geeky etc. It has a lot to do with the culture demographics no doubt.
    As to which loco I'd rather...obviously the newer one but if the older was, say, £50 and the newer £150 give me the older one. Been modelling for over 20 years, can spank it up myself. :)
    I'm just refusing modern RTR.
    The Heljan 02 Tango on Hattons is now less than £90 when it was £180 or whatever, same for a lot of other Hattons bargains.
    Obviously the RTR firms can still make a profit on £90 so that proves to me the £180 or whatever is a another $^£% take.
    There is over ten 0-8-0's of some description down to £56 from about £144 I think it was. Great pricw but again, if they can profit from that why take us for mugs in the first place?
    Ugh, whinging again!

    Sam's trains it might interest you to know that your crew in your older 2800 is the wrong way round almost all but definitely all locomotives during churchward and after where right hand driven. Your driver should be on the right and fireman on the left. I would point out the wonky chimney on the old one but you confessed to melting the boiler. I'd be torn as to which to have but the new one is better, ignoring the gimmicks you could add. A 28xx is worth it if you have use for it, for display or running a layout or both. The latter may ensure money's worth. One may struggle if they are picky about accuracy or are not a collector. Same goes for any model though really.

  • @Taggart00
    @Taggart00 6 років тому

    I would probably go for the 90's version as you can always weather it without too much worry and if your just running it for fun from a distance a lot of the finer detail is lost. The modern detailed loco is more for the collector/exhibitor.
    I think Hornbys mentality in the 90s was still the same as Tri-angs in the 60s to produce toy trains for the Father & son (Or Grandfather and grandson) to enjoy together where it was more concerned with releasing models that could be produced using the standard motor or chassis to keep costs down and there wasn't any real competition to force them to create more realistic models.

    No GWR 2-8-0 engine, model or real, is my favourite in all honesty. I do take exception to 2857 on the Severn Valley Railway, and 3802 (the enlarged version with side-windowed cab) on the Llangollen Railway. But I don't love them in the same way as I love my beloved Foxcote Manor. The 2-8-0's run well, believe me, yet they are nowhere near as lovable as the 4-6-0 Manor Engines in my opinion. As for a comparison video, maybe, if you have both kinds, you could compare a Hornby 4-6-0 Hall with its Bachmann counterpart. I love the GWR Hall Engines almost as much as the Manors, so I'd like to see a GWR Hall comparison very much.

    Steady on, not all of them are toys. The NRM has the world's oldest model railway, it was designed to train signalmen on the Lancashire & Yorkshire. I'm sure that the Underground had one at some point. I suspect in a world of HD TV, Blu-Rays and 60 frames per second manufacturers offering only lower detail models might struggle to keep going, no matter how robust their wares.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 років тому

    I'm 11 and I have a set, I get mostly second hand models, with not much detail, like railroad and older mainline and triang models. My trackwork is shoddy and if an engine is derailed it could be damaged, and where I live there is precious little money, so we conserve by getting older, cheaper models that are less fragile. Plus, I like to thrash the hell out of my engines, I think 1419 (my 14xx) could well be planning a strike.

    Very interesting and lots of points raised there. I think you summed up the differences very well. My first point would be, will the modern one still work and look much as it does today in 27 years time if it was given the same amount of use as the old one? Old one, was no doubt mass produced and as such had to be simple and easy to make and like you said share parts with others in the range, moderns locos much to my personal displeasure are usually limited runs and as we know, don't share that many parts with the rest of the range. Which looks best, well for sure Mr modern does, but back in the 90s our old friend looked like a 2800 and so therefore was one :) What do these models do? well spot on they bring joy, but they are without doubt also a passport to times long gone, experiences lived through and for many better and more simple times, that is a massive responsibility that todays manufactures just don't get I feel. Also of course many models will have been given as gifts and in 27 years there is every chance they will now hold a great deal of sentimental value to the owner. LOL I have gone on too long, nice video mate

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 років тому

      Thanks a lot Mike - yeah that's very true - if these modern locos are still around in 27 years, it'll be because of lots of very hard work, they really don't build them like they used to! Thanks a lot for the comment mate,

    Good video as usual. I would prefer the new more detailed model. But I agree with you that they should have a less expensive trains just for kids. BTW, have you heard from IC/82?

      Thanks Frank! Yeah I love them too - but I also really enjoy the basic models, it's a shame we don't see more of them! Sadly I'm not in contact with Will, but hopefully all is well with him! :D
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    Sam: these old fashioned really clunky looking whistles
    Me: how dare you those whistles are my childhood
    Great video as always. Thank you for the awesome entertainment.

    well, sometimes it isn't kids, there are sometimes teens who watch this or pre-teens. but yes the cost is what draws people like us to limit down on what we need to buy, even for a simple Express Passenger Locomotive, 110 quid or probably $120+ USD that's probably going to end the kids money he was saving up for years
