Liked hearing this discussion! Very interesting booktube origin story- essays arent for everyone. I’m so glad you made your channel! So glad i found you!
City is tough until the 2nd or 3rd story. The first story feels like setup for every else. Will the Chris note taking method be available as a book on cassette? 😆 Ira’s casual sci-fi knowledge is so awesome. Definitely some reads feel like they belong only to yourself. A really enjoyable conversation to watch.
The way Chris absorbs books is impressive, I'd like a in depth tutorial as well, I'll break out by cassette player. Thanks for the compliment Virgil, it would be fun to collaborate in the future.
Fun seeing your chat! I’ve read probably 85 to 90% of King including his 21st century output. I like his Hardcase books ‘Colorado Kid’ and ‘Later’. Chris, I’d recommend ‘Later’ or ‘Revival’, both short, to achieve King reentry.
Hearing you talking about booktube in general is interesting, very much how I feel about it too. Chris! The genetically modified animals in SF - I have just finished David Brin's The Uplift War, which definitely ticks all the boxes there I wonder if you have read any of them because I am puzzled at how few people seem to be discussing them.
If I remember correctly, "Dolores Claiborne" and "Gerald's Game" are linked. The eclipse that happens? "Under the Dome" might be the last thing I've read by King. I didn't even bother with his Dark Tower series. I have a Delaney book saved in my wants, "Nova". Don't know if it's any good or who was until now, I just saw the cover and thought it was cool. That Simak book, "All Flesh is Grass", sounds like something I'll have to take a peek at.
Stephen King not a favourite of mine but Needful Things and The Dark Half (related to the twin personas of Donald E Westlake and Richard Stark ..humour and darkness) Clifford Simak master..Time is the Simplest Thing and the short stories Jackpot and Final Gentleman stand out. City..originally 5 or so novelties. Simak's robots nicer than Asimov's.😂
My dad speaks highly of Simak. I haven’t read anything by Simak but plan to. Mastadonia (?) is what my dad recommended to me. Also, hot take: dogs and cats are already more evolved than humans. They aren’t causing global warming, or cutting down rain forests, or creating nuclear weapons… just sayin’ 🤷
You guys should get together and do a list of the top ten books of a certain sci-fi topic. @@sfwordsofwonder It would be great fun to collab!
In the pulp era Simak even wrote a handful of western short stories.

Good stuff but I had to switch off because I'm right in the middle of reading Dream Master! Which is great so far!

All Flesh is Grass is pretty good, it's a fairly short and easy read and since you just finished Under the Dome you might find it interesting.
Simak is an sf regionalist and pastoralist. For me he's up with Bradbury, poetic with more focus! Bradbury and Simak are the great humanists of sf!
To me, the best sf dog story is Propagandist by Murray Leinster.

Listen to Steve Donoghue just winging it on all manner of books! I thought I was well read at one time. Compared to Steve, I got nothin!
