    As a 29 year old man who’s wanted to be an expat since 9 years old, I can definitely understand the struggles with the US at this point. What I’ve come to realize after working in education for 3 years before leaving the profession, is that there is an extremely large portion of the population of the United States that is uneducated and not willing to learn. I think we are at a point of no return at this point in the United States. 😢😢😢
    Thanks for the video,
    Chris

      Concentrate on two main objectives. First, keep yourself safe by knowing when to sell stocks in order to limit losses and maximize gains. Second, get ready to benefit from market changes. I advise consulting a professional for advice.

    Quick question: If you are a Irish citizen living abroad. Do you still have to take the theory test ,and go threw whole process again like we do in the states. Currently I have no expectations of living in Ireland ,but I am in the process of obtaining Irish citizenship.

    • @mcginnsteph
      @mcginnsteph  Рік тому +2

      Great question! I’m 99% sure yeah, you would have to do the whole process! …. Plenty of other European countries, Ireland just allows you to transfer your license over and actually Canada as well but if you’re coming from the United States you’ll have to do it all (but the only break you get is doing six lessons instead of 12), other than that, you do need to do the theory test, lessons and driving test.
      Actually it’s funny I just happened to say in my last video, even my husband being born and raised in Ireland and having already had his Irish drivers license, when we came back because his license had expired 10 years ago (he had been in America for 10 years); he was supposed to do the theory test, lessons and everything all over again. Long story short I think he got somebody nice and he got lucky and got his reinstated anyways but yeah.

    You can buy from Amazon in Spain, Amazon es and you wont have to pay custom charges. Because of climate change, we are now trying to buy shoes and boots which can be repaired and last so much longer while still retaining the quality. Each of us has a carbon footprint and the plan is to keep this as small as possible. Most of us don't like the schools including religion and hopefully in the years ahead this will be dropped. We all pay tax on our earnings throughout our lives and yes you are right there is a small charge in hospital of 100 euro so that everyone can have access to healthcare. Health cover gives you faster access to consultants and private wards in hospitals. Roughly 50 percent of the population have this. Our police force do not carry guns and the general public do not have guns. There are of course criminals who have guns in most cities mostly drug dealers. If a farmer wants a gun to protect his farms from foxes he will have to apply for a gun licence and these are not easy to get. We are thankful for this. The gun laws in America are crazy, it's so sad that they have to have gun drills in schools. Land is very expensive here and house prices are very high so it is difficult for people to buy their own homes over the past five years. Previous to that it was not as difficult. We have a brilliant young workforce who are highly educated and whiz kids on computers! We are enriched by the many different cultures we have in Ireland now and so happy to be able to bring the people from Ukraine into our homes at this terrible time. It really makes you think, material things, big houses, big cars, they mean nothing. A roof over our heads, a warm house, food and clothes for our children and peace in our time. That's where contentment and happiness is. You are so welcome to Ireland Steph. I love hearing about the differences and how others see us. Thank you for your videos and enjoy the summer. • @mcginnsteph
      @mcginnsteph  2 роки тому +3

      Well really anywhere in the county of Dublin would be okay for commuting in I think! Certain cities can be a little more affordable than others. If you’re looking outside of Dublin,…. Kildare, Meath or Louth (depending on what side of the city you’re working in); sticking with living in Dublin county would be the best but it is like the most expensive county to live in, (so that’s why I mentioned the other neighboring counties) we’re just staying at his parents again for now but we’re hoping to stay in Dublin (the north side) when we do buy. (We may have a look in Kildare too, may be able to get a little more for the money)

      As Steph had recommended, within Dublin Metro Area, the (satellite) towns of Dun Laoghaire, and Bray, just outside the city of Dublin's southern border; then, a little bit farther afield, in the town & country surrounding Dublin (no more than 1/2 an hour of driving to/from Dublin), you've got the towns of Drogheda (straight to the north of Dublin, along the shore of the Irish Sea); Trim (to the northwest of Dublin); Naas, and Kildare (slightly to the southwest of Dublin); and Wicklow, and Arklow (straight to the south of Bray; and just like Dun Laoghaire, and Bray, the towns of Wicklow, and Arklow are sandwiched in-between the Irish Sea, to the east, and Wicklow Mountains, to the west). Two things to consider, though: ever since the 1990s, Dublin Metro Area (in particular) has been into a state of perpetual housing crises, with no end in sight; that, with "supply-side economics" mixed in, have created a situation where the housing prices (rentals, in particular) soared out of control. Hi! So we are hoping to move to Ireland next summer. We were going to move to France-that’s where my wife is from but due to my youngest not speaking fluent French yet we have decided to move to Ireland first for 4 years then move to France. My question--did you not own a home in the US? You mentioned getting a mortgage--we would be able to buy a home outright because we have lots of equity here in Boston on our current home. Can you also recommend a good area with home prices that are not as high for instance in Dublin?

    • @mcginnsteph
      @mcginnsteph  2 роки тому +4

      Hello! We did own a home in the states; we sold it very quickly right as we were moving over! We did do pretty well on it, definitely making money from selling it, as it was worth a good bit more than when we bought it but still not enough money to outright buy a home in the county of Dublin lol the prices are just quite high! But the money we did make on her house has definitely been helpful. Basically anywhere outside of Dublin (the county, not just the actual city) starts to get cheaper as you move out from Dublin. If you want to be close enough to Dublin, like us for example my husband works in town, then the county of Meath (going north) or Kildare (going more south) start to get cheaper. And then moving farther out from those probably gets even cheaper, if you want to browse myhome.ie, that could be helpful for you to get an idea of prices of homes!

    I'm surprised they don't offer tax rebates to tourists on certain goods it would create a lot of business.

      @@ni-feidir-eitilt I have bad news and good news. The good news is that unless you’re income is very SUBSTANTIAL there are ways to avoid American taxes. This is when you are still a citizen. Americans are required to file a tax return (one of the very few countries in the world that do that if the money you earn comes from outside the US and you’re living outside the US). If you have an income there is an offset form you can file called the Z2000, which basically exempts you from having to pay tax on income up to a certain amount. The last time I filed, I think it was 2002, the off-set was $100,000. It’s a small addendum form you send along with your regular income tax return. They adjust every few years, so the exemption amount now is likely to be much higher now 20 years later. That means if your income was less than that exemption amount you have no tax to pay (however, in that form you have to indicate how many days in that tax year you were in the US, including the dates, then you have to divide whatever the amount the full exemption amount is by 365 and that gives you how much each day that year is ‘worth’ and subtract that amount multiplied by however many days you were in America that year.
      If your income exceeded the amount of your exemption, the next thing you can do is ask to offset that remaining amount not covered by the z2000, by showing what tax you payed on your income in the country where you earned the money and you can offset the tax you paid in that country against what your US tax form shows you owe the IRS. So unless you make a very hefty income that should help you clear having to pay Uncle Sam.
      Here’s the bad news - FATCA. Basically this is a law brought in I think in 2010, to try and track down any money Americans have invested abroad that is providing you with an income, investments, rental properties, etc. Of course you’re supposed to report those assets as well. But some people try to keep the IRS from seeing that. So say you lived and worked in Milan and the money you earned from your job came from Italy, and you had a very profitable portfolio of stocks managed for you by an Italian fund manager. Not only would the IRS want to see your job earnings on the US tax form they would also want the Italian Fund Manager to provide them with details of all the American clients they had on their books. And they back that up with severe penalties levied on firms with any American clients they fail to let the IRS know about on their books. The result is when you open accounts with foreign banks and investment firms and the information you provide them leads them to believe you hold American citizenship you will be asked to fill in a form supporting your claim that you are not American or admit to your American citizenship along with your American SSN. I gave up my citizenship 6 years before the FATCA legislation came into effect. But I still have hassles with some banks from time to time, which is why my last American passport stamped with the date my citizenship was cancelled is an invaluable piece of evidence that FATCA rules do not apply to me. It’s invaluable.
      One last thing. The IRS asks that you continue to file taxes with them for ten additional years after you have given up your US citizenship.

In any case I think the extra-territorial laws the US imposes on its citizens is outrageous. Canadians living abroad don’t have these hassles. I think it’s cheaper. Because I pay 1/4 of my income to health insurance here in the US. It’s ridiculous. I found groceries were cheaper there too. My wife and I would love to move there but can’t bc we don’t make “enough” even if we won a 2 million lottery we can’t unless: we get a job ahead of time and we buy our way is which is ridiculously expensive for anyone. Any tips?

      Yeah the driving ended up not being too bad at all! (I just work myself up often 😅🤣🤣); yeah health insurance in the US is crazy!!
      We held off for a while bc (as I was not working, staying home with the kids) the financial aspect and not having enough saved was tough. I would recommend having a job ahead of time as you said (that was another reason we waited, was hard for my hubs to secure a job without being here). We had a trip over as a family last summer for a visit but my hubs set up a couple interviews and we said “if he gets one and it’s the right salary, it’s meant to be” and it happened. We did have some things that really worked in our favor (like being able to stay at his parents for a little while, while they live in Italy part time)….. I’m happy to help and answer any other questions and offer any support I can!

      It’s going to be hard bc my wife is in retail. She won’t be making a ton moving to Ireland either. I’m in graphic design (signs, paper goods, anything vinyl/sticker, logos, shirt designs, plaques, social media)

    Dublin has become like San Francisco because it’s the tech capital of Europe the market is incredibly overheated . FF and FG have been useless when it comes to housing.
    It’s funny is everybody’s out and about shopping in Ireland because not everyone’s buying on Amazon that’s why I love Grafton and Henry Street. Thank God the Catholic Church has lost their influence in the country.

    What county are you living in? Gas might be more but health insurance is cheaper in Ireland. $21.99 for a man's razor with 4 spare blades in Smith's in USA. In Dunne's Stores I could buy the same razor for about $8.00 Vans might be cheaper in the USA but Doc martens are about the same. I think Ireland and the USA are not the best countries to live in...The GDP per Capita is higher than the GDP in the USA. This is concerning, how does a country like Ireland have a higher GDP? It's because of low corporation tax in Ireland. Use the German Amazon because the pound is higher value compared to Euro and Dollar. Brexit is another issue. Housing in the desired places in USA is expensive, ever see prices in San Francisco? I have to do the driving test here too. You can apply for an International driving license. I wish you the best of luck in your new journey. Embrace it, enjoy yourself and no place is perfect. I would pick living in London or Amsterdam compared to the USA and Ireland, way more fun.

      I don’t think the schools are necessarily only Catholic in name here in Ireland, as they do things like confirmation and communion through school. That would never happen in the states. Would be very odd to have a religious practice/tradition in school (unless a private school with are much less common)
