I think the reason that happened is because the game prioritized mario interacting with the spring and not counting for yoshi, hence why he shrunk, its a programming oversight with a very specific condition to occur.
They were playing on the Wii Virtual Console, which has a save feature for NES and SNES, if you went back to it after turning off the console, it'll start up right where you left off
