    I can't help but feel that Brian has a soft spot for Shoei! Sorry mate! more expensive isn't always better :)
    I own both Shoei and Scorpion helmets and let me share some quick facts after using both brands....on the road and track
    Scorpion ST1400 (EXO 1400 Air Europe) Amazingly light weight, quite and very very aero dynamic. There's ZERO lift, buffeting or vibration at speed. I have a Sena S20 installed on mine and the speakers fit perfectly. My only 2 small gripes with the Scorpion is the ventilation. It's quite decent at the chin bar and visor city position but the top vent flows very little air! The drop down sun visor is not the best to be honest. It's not optically correct and yes, it's not sturdy
    I don't own the Shoei GT Air ii but I have a Shoei RF1200 and compare it to the Scorpion R2000 (S2000 Evo Air in Europe) I also have.
    Long story short, the Scorpion is better in every way! IT's much cheaper, lighter, quieter and more stable at speed. The liner material in the Scorpion is also a lot more comfortable. Plus as Brian pointed out, once any helmet breaks in it becomes a bit loose. This is remedied by Scorpion's Airfit system.
    Overall Scorpion is better to be honest.
    Hope this helps :)

      No soft spots nor favoritism here, just trying to serve up an honest opinion. I have been a big fan of the Scorpion brand from day 1, tons of videos filled with love for Scorpion. IMO Scorpion helmets offer the best overall value in helmets today. There are things about the GT Air II that are a little better than the ST-1400, these differences are slight. It is up to the individual to decide if the extra spend makes sense for them.
      The quality of the Shoei is better than that of the Scorpion, that said the difference is not massive. - Van

    Showing the fit with glasses is essential. I really appreciate that. And i hope you continue doing in your next helmet reviews, Brian.
    For those riders, that wear glasses and are looking for more choices in helmets, i can really recommend Shark. Their helmets leave ample room even for larger frames and don't interfere with glasses at all. Works really well with their large integrated sun visors, too.

  • @andrewlove8971
    @andrewlove8971 3 роки тому +13

    I own both. Sizing is in fact different. My head is right in between the Shoei medium and large. This means a Shoei large fits great off the shelf but quickly relaxes to be too loose for me. The Shoei medium fits too tight initially but after wearing it for a few thousand miles it was an acceptable fit.
    For me the scorpion Large fits a goldilocks just right. It's the primary reason I made the switch. The reason the reviewer had less nose room is that a medium scorpion is smaller than a Shoei medium and the sizing chart reflects that.
    The Shoei is quieter, the scorpion is still reasonably quiet.
    The scorpion is lighter, and you can feel the difference noticeably.
    I also own the Scorpion R1 which is a track focused helmet that is also worn by Fabio Quatararo on the factory Yamaha motogp team.
    The R1 and ST1400 share the same visors. Personally I find it nice to have extra visors available. I learned the hardway last summer when I laid my bike down on the track that it's handy to have an extra helmet with you. The bike was fine, the helmet was not, so i couldn't ride again until the next day.
    Glasses fit better in the scorpion for sure!
    The fabric in the scorpion feels better. My girlfriend hated the inside feel of every helmet she tried on before she tried a Scorpion. She wouldn't ride with me because she's that picky. The fabric just feels softer less "function only" and more pleasant.
    The Shoei's tinted visor is better, not just from how far it drops, I think it's darker as well.
    I haven't worn the Scorpion in temperatures over 80f yet, but ventilation seems on par.
    ECE rating on the Scorpion. The Shoei gt-air has a separate edition for europe. This tells me that the US version cannot in fact meet ECE or Snell.
    Primarily from a fit perspective I favor the Scorpion. The only things I'd change on the scorpion are the interval visor hue and I'd quiet it up some.
    The things I'd change on the Shoei are how glasses fit and I'd have it lose a few pounds. I'd suggest sizing, but every head is different and it might be perfect for you.

      Hey Andrew curious about the air system. I have a scorpion 1200 freeway and just ordered the 1400 carbon. My air bladder from new has always lost pressure fairly quickly, I’d say within 10 minutes. If I pump it up tight you can feel it start to loosen right away. Is it this way on yours or does it hold its pressure for an acceptable amount of time?

      KB I am going through the same dilemma…. I found the quality of the new 1400 nowhere near as good as the 1200. And Shoei and HJC decided to put crap right where I mount my Sena 20s…. I own the European exo1400 air and i can tell you one thing, the helmet runs hot and louder especially when you have a comm installed and that sucks because i live in india where the temperature is hovering around 35-40°C.
    The build quality though is exceptional for the price and beats the shoei in most areas. It's also lighter and imo nicer to wear.

    Thanks Van for a no bullshit all business review and comparison (checked out all the videos on st1400, 2020 helmet guide etc). Ordered a scorpion, quite excited! They had 16% off on the "Grand" white graphic on the distributor in Sweden. Lacking in sizes on other graphics so was a bit limited on options (thanks Corona). But with 16% off I could buy 2 extra lenses (gold and purple, f*** yes I dig purple). Would've gotten the R1 model but for long cruises I don't want to shift lenses and bring spares because of shifting weather. So drop-down visor will make things adaptable on the fly and those bitching lenses for hometown street riding. And the Scorpions looks are top notch! Oh, and I wear prescription glasses so scorpion got a 1Up there.

    One of the things that I find important in a full face helmet and never tested is a "crap open" visor setting. Often I need a little more air and open the visor just a little. A good feature would be a setting for the visor just open a bit and stay open!

    I have had Shoei GT Air mk1 and...the only thing I liked about it was its looks and graphics. The Fit on my head was so weird I had to go size up making me look like a baby with a giant head. The outer shield had such a strong spring mechanism I thought they have used the car suspension coils to get this lovely resistance and the side opening on outer visor would mess the pinlock insert position due to twisting every time I opened up the visor, making the pinlock pretty much useless and ALWAYS steaming up on one side, even just on colder days without rain... Overall the worst £470 uk pounds I spent on the motorcycle gear...
    Luckily I was able to sell it on eBay, then "downgrade" to HJC is17 which is tested in HJCs own wind tunnel, has a dedicated recess for pinlock in outer visor so it does not move and fits perfectly... all at 4th of the price.
    I can see Shoei have not addressed any of those issues in their mk2, but hey people, will still buy it for the brand name.

    Replacing my aging EXO T1200. Bought the new EXO 1400. Not of the same quality anymore. The Shoei and HJC decided that it would be a great idea to put crap in the same location I would mount my Sena 20S system…. Uggh!!! You think there will be an upgraded SRL2 down the line?
    I was actually aiming to get the neotec 2 last year but ended up passing on it because mesh looks to be the obvious gold standard in comm-systems and the SRL is a Bluetooth only device.
    This year's SRL did the same mistake (in my opinion) which makes me wanna pass on the GT Air 2 as well.
    Sure it looks super great, but a packtalk slim isn't all that far behind and combined with GT Air 1 it is the same helmet engineering, better communicator tech at a much lower price.
    Can't wrap my head around this priority made by Sena in this partnership.

    Just bought the Shoei. First ride finished at the local cafe, where I realized the clever new micro-adjust chin strap fastener can’t attach to the bike’s helmet lock!
    (One might advance an argument against locking a $1000 helmet on the bike 😁, but still an annoyance.)
    P.S. the Bluetooth rig is pretty trick.

    Amazing video bro, I like your all videos, bcoz I am also a biker by heart, I am a beginner at UA-cam take a look at my channel too 😊😊
    And please make a video on Kawasaki Ninja 400 vs Kawasaki Ninja 650, I am so confusing that which bike I have to choose, ninja 400 is just 1lakh cheaper then ninja 650 here in India, but ninja 400 looks like track and touring and ninja 650 looks like only for tour, can we also do better cornering on ninja 650 on Race Tracks ??
    Please give your views on both of these beautiful machines Ninja 400 and Ninja 650 ..
    It may be the the first video on UA-cam bcoz right now no comparison video of ninja 400 and ninja 650 available on UA-cam ..

    • @sportbiketrackgear
      @sportbiketrackgear  5 років тому +4

      I have ridden in and own pretty much every helmet we recommend here at STG. While these are both solid helmets they are not the style I ride in with the majority of my riding being on the track at this point. That said I have worn, ridden in, taken apart and put back together more helmets than anyone in this space personally. This experience is more than enough to form an educated opinion. - Brian Van

    i currently use a Shoei NXR and a Scorpion Exo 2000evo Air and i must say the Scorpion is much better and the Shoei is a disapointment i was expecting a better helmet, i also do regular track days and this Shoei GT Air2 is not allowed on any uk track days as it does not have the double D chin strap big mistake Shoei BIG Oooops im afraid, so looks like another scorpion for me.

    • @sportbiketrackgear

    I'm sorry, but are you seriously suggesting certification is the same even though the gt air 2 doesn't have anything but DOT certification? Until both helmets have the same certification you can't even compare them.

    • @sportbiketrackgear
      @sportbiketrackgear  4 роки тому +1

      I disagree, these helmets are very comparable to one another. The DOT standard is not a bad standard. The biggest issue with it is the fact it is on the honor system and the helmets do not have to be sent in for testing. With a reputable brand like Shoei I have full confidence the helmet will pass testing for the DOT standard and protect the rider in the event of a crash as well as any other full face with a drop down inner shield would. - Van

    How can you review a helmet without riding it? It seems pointless in my opinion. How is the field of vision, the wind noise, etc???

    • @sportbiketrackgear
      @sportbiketrackgear  2 роки тому

      I own and have ridden in over 75 helmets over the past few decades. Over the same period I have worn (in the shop), reviewed and taken apart hundreds of helmets. This experience is what makes it possible to give a reasonable review of a helmet without riding in it. With helmets that are on our list of core products I make a point of riding in them. The GT Air II is not on that list. - Van

    Ventilation and aerodynamics I would disagree with his opinion especially since he didn’t even ride with them. I’d bet that rating not being ece was the strap. Lying because one costs more makes a lot sense but it’s embarrassing as a company to not check that.

    • @sportbiketrackgear
      @sportbiketrackgear  3 роки тому +1

      How many helmets have you ridden in? The Shoei is not ECE because this helmet is being sold in the US market and requires the DOT not ECE. Additionally Shoei is using Snell and DOT or DOT only here in the US. Take you lying comment and go away with that bullshit Mr Wizard. - Van

    The side shield opening in combination with super strong spring mechanism on Shoei makes the pinlock pointless. It maked the pinlock to move every time you open the shield and causes it to steam up in rain, or colder days. Will never spend that much money on Shoei again.

    • @sportbiketrackgear
      @sportbiketrackgear  4 роки тому

      @@sportbiketrackgear Yes, I have tried everything and this was not my first motorcycle helmet. I also got a
      the replacement shield for the Shoei, under warranty and still the same issue so I narrowed it down to the two issues I mentioned above.
      I now have hjc helmet for half the price..no issues at all.

    So basically, if you can't afford the premium Shoei, just settle for the Scorpion.

    • @sportbiketrackgear
      @sportbiketrackgear  5 років тому +2

      I don't look at it like settling, the Scorpion is an excellent helmet and will perform very close to the Shoei. Sure there are things about the Shoei that are better, small differences IMO. If you prefer top level stuff and can afford the Shoei you will like the helmet. If you have to stretch to buy the Shoei save the money and go with the Scorpion, it's a great helmet. - Van

      I can easily afford any helmet on the market including the AGV Pista. It doesn't mean it's the right helmet for me. For me, a lighter helmet that can accept a variety of coms and costs at least a bill less than the Shoei, is a no brainer.
