That is what makes this movie so good. It's extremely authentic. The lingo, the dress, the body movement...whoever did the writing knows the low lifes (I was one of them!) that hang out at the tracks.
Robbie Coltrane played the ticket man here long before he played Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies. This was my introduction to him and this scene ranks among my favorites of all time. RIP good sir... 😢
just read about Robbie Coltrane's passing. Everyone's talking about a bunch of movies I didn't enjoy. I came right here to watch this scene. This made me cry even as a child. What a wonderful scene. What chemistry between these two actors. I'm off to watch the scene from the counting room. Hopefully I can find it.
I was very shocked the first time I checked this movies rating at Rotten Tomatoes and saw that they had it at 27%. WTF? I don't want to overrate it either but how could anyone not like this movie. It's funny as hell to start with and a great feel good movie to boot. Richard Dreyfuss gives a great performance. It's one of my favorite comedies of all times. No wonder people don't pay attention to movie critics anymore.
I had a 8yr old son and a 2yr old daughter and stay at home wife and a executive hillside home in Thousand Oaks. 12/26/86 was massive for me at that time.
Good for you. I hope your property has tripled in value. The concept of many in thus world is that it's easy to be an American of worth. They don't get the concept that America is very competitive. So if a person has a home where yours is, that person worked for it. Nobody just gave it to them. All the best in the future.
Let it Ride!! I remember watching this when i was a little kid in the mid 90's, and the movie just pulls on your heart and makes you feel happy. From the great acting, to the wonderful music. This movie is up there with my favorite childhood movie memories. Everyone has different things that just take them back to childhood. Richard Dreyfuss has got to be one of my favorite under rated actors in Hollywood. i really wish he made more movies.
i had this movie in vhs when i was a kid and i lost it,i watched it again just a few days ago and furthermore I BET ON HORSES SINCE I WAS 10 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!
"Are you sure you don't wanna hold back a little just - in - case..." "In case what?" "Mmm, in case you get hungry or thirsty before the end of the race." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Best lines of a film full of them.
In this scene Trotter elevates himself to a God to every single person at the track. What did he achieve? He took the #4 horse and won and continued to Let it Ride allowing everybody to join in the adventure with him.
There was a scene where he invited everyone he knew to get in on the action, to bet it all with him, and they couldn't do it. They thought he was blessed, but they couldn't make that leap of faith with him. Even the last horse, his best friend who had been through it with him said NOT to bet on "Hot to Trot" (the alternate title)...and he looked at the horse, and it winked at him. He looked back at his friend and said, "Whatever I do...DON'T BET THIS HORSE." His friend's noise of disbelief even sounded like a horse's snort. And then he goes and bets it all.
My favorite film I own and watch 3 or 4 times a year. I'm a life long horseplayer. I relate to it on many levels. From 1979-1995 I had reserved seats at the top of Isle B at Santa Anita. I've had amazing success especially in the 1980's. I bet exactas only from 1978-2018. Now only Superfecta's. 12/26/86 I took $168 for the 4 exactas on Santa Anita's opening day. $20 for small bets other than exactas. Bet $4 on Laffit's horse in the first. By the end of the day that $4 was almost $9,000 of the just short of $30,000 1986 dollars I won that day. I hit a $1852 super for .10 on 4/27/21 at Churchill (6th race)x3 for a $27.80 bet returned $5556. Four months to the day after hitting a $8044 at Fairgrounds 12/27/21 for $22.60 bet! I'm still waiting for the $1924 the IRS withheld in my refund. I know what the character feels like because it's my passion!
07-05-23: Take it from someone who crushed a Kentucky Derby (2002 War Emblem 20-1): Very romantic. Now. Do not try this at the race track yourself, unless you want to be cleaning toilets at your local Walmart for the next 539 years, trying to get your $$$ back.
Yeah but you had to go the track and be there all day! I like being able to bet a race at Belmont watch it then run an errand or go for a swim and then bet a race at Churchill.
This movie made me laugh so hard. As hard as when my mom said that when she went to the theater when she was young that no black people were in the theater. It's because they were all sitting in the balcony and she just never saw them. LMAO She didn't laugh. Again LMAO
This film will be copoed by some ctetan who will dedtroy it Drefuus genius 3 wonderfull acctress And the hope that someday that all punters.that go to the track will have that good day I had it once saoirse abu at 50s Sluced in for the great bolger and manning at the curragh beatng o brein and his million pound horses I was asked if id had too many guinness Who had the llast laugh Payout 45000 Ah jesus
My father spent a lot of his life at the track. He loved this movie, said whoever wrote it understood the degenerate gambler.
That is what makes this movie so good. It's extremely authentic. The lingo, the dress, the body movement...whoever did the writing knows the low lifes (I was one of them!) that hang out at the tracks.

here in 2022 remebering the great Robbie Coltrane, you were one of the best I've ever seen. RIP.
RIP Robbie Coltrane. You were brilliant in this film. One of my favorites.
A true Scottish gentleman
Love how Robbie's character went from contempt for Dreyfuss' character to respectful adoration. Such an underrated movie.
One of the most under rated movies ever.
Shannon Cox who do you like?
Underrated it was a huge hit????
One to watch again at least once every five years. Neither Hollywood or indy community makes such films anymore.
"I'll tell my grandchildren about you". And." They go from my ass all the way to the floor"..
@@12121149 budget 18 million box office 4.9 million according to Wikipedia.
Who knows how accurate that info is though?
Sad day when a great actor passes away 😥 I loved him in this film! RIP Robbie 🕊️
The cigarette after the tickets...brilliant comedy😆
Ikr, and how quiet it was. Just a great scene. RIP Robbie Coltrane.
RIP Mr Coltrane. You have blessed us with this scene and many others, that we can replay and smile always and remember a lovable and huggable man.
Will always tear up on this scene now. The chemistry between Robbie and Richard. Safe journey my friend.
Is unique and perfect!
Every time i watch this movie.
It gets better .
That lady hugging him, everyone wanting him to win just makes me smile. Undeniable classic film.
I love this movie so much, it's a movie that will make you feel a little better at the end.
RIP Robbie Coltrane. Great acting from him in these scenes, as usual.
Love this movie and a hearty thank you to Robbie Coltrane. RIP Buddy, you were one of a kind 👍❤️
One of the worlds largely undiscovered gems. Long may it stay so.

The whole movie is great. You can watch it over and over.
I was very shocked the first time I checked this movies rating at Rotten Tomatoes and saw that they had it at 27%. WTF? I don't want to overrate it either but how could anyone not like this movie. REALLY??? I’m with you man, how could people give it such low ratings? Maybe it needed a stupid Superhero in it to increase popularity.
one of the best movies ever.
I never use RT, I think their rating system sucks. It's a 6.8 on IMDb, and that's a respectable score for an 80s comedy.
Yup. best ever. and because it feels good the critics don’t like it because they are miserable and misery loves company.
My dad introduced this movie to me when I was a young lass. it's a classic film.
I had a 8yr old son and a 2yr old daughter and stay at home wife and a executive hillside home in Thousand Oaks. 12/26/86 was massive for me at that time.

RIP Robbie. One of my favorite movies of all time, probably because it is filled with the best character actors in the biz at the time.
This may be my favorite scene from any movie of all time.. When someone tells you they have "a sure thing", NEVER bet on it !!
Thanks for posting. This is a great scene from an equally stellar story. Everyone at some point looks up and simply hopes that today is their day.
Yup but then they say "I don't need it, give it to him."
Great Movie! Remembered Robbie was in it and had to check the clip out. RIP Robbie Coltrane.
Let it Ride!! I remember watching this when i was a little kid in the mid 90's, and the movie just pulls on your heart and makes you feel happy. From the great acting, to the wonderful music. Hahahahaha I love vhs movies! I need to buy it on DVD, but I don't wanna pay a lot.
I bumped into Richard Dreyfuss in CVS in southern California, he lives near my neighborhood.
"Are you sure you don't wanna hold back a little just - in - case..."
"In case what?"
"Mmm, in case you get hungry or thirsty before the end of the race."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Best lines of a film full of them.
RIP, Robbie Coltrane ❤️
One of the best scenes in one of the greatest films of all time!
One of the best movies EVER. Never tire of it!
A wonderful film. Fucking funny. If you like a flutter on whatever, more than you should, you will understand the mindset.
“I have peripheral vision, I can see my ears”
He looks at the camera , and say's ;
AM I HAVING A GOOD DAY OR WHAT.
Robbie Coltrane is just as next level as Dreyfuss.
A gambler's movie.
I loved this movie and anyone with a love of character actors would love this movie. This has so many great performances it's mind boggling.
I love 'Let it Ride'

I miss him so much. He was a treasure. ❤️

I still love how Trotter says, *"What are you doing?"* when Looney is donating blood

This amazing scene in the middle of an amazing movie. It's such a different kind of funny/dramatic scene. Very well written and acted.

Will miss his humor in movies
It was Hagrid's magic the entire time.

Still think the math is wrong in this scene. 48 / 50 dollar win tickets at 25 to 1 is $30,000 in my book. Am I wrong ?
I never saw this film before. What year was it made?
Everyone was so good in this movie!!
Drunk Teri garr sounds like fun too.
Really great,,,
"Up yours"
A fun fun movie.

My old man and I love this movie 😍

Only printed 37 or 38 win tickets. And, by the way, man ... I miss asking for tickets. It was fantastic. Now, all on phone.
Yeah but you had to go the track and be there all day! I like being able to bet a race at Belmont watch it then run an errand or go for a swim and then bet a race at Churchill.
I'm having a very good day
One of the best scenes in one of the greatest films of all time!/*-
Funny, funny movie...
you think that printing out a ticket that has $50 x 48 would be easier 🤔
"I'm broke". ;)
It's quiet...
I actually own about 7 movies and this is one. So under appreciated.
Classic
it's Richard Gere in your profile picture??
HOW MUCH DID TROTTER FINALLY WIN ON HOT TO TROT AT THE VERY END??????
500,000
Nice.
I like to think he finally quit after that last win and was never seen at the track again.
No no no,he bet 69000 dollars on hot to trot who pays 40,only afterwards the odd goes down to 8.
I have figured it out:$612,000
that's me
This movie made me laugh so hard. As hard as when my mom said that when she went to the theater when she was young that no black people were in the theater. It's because they were all sitting in the balcony and she just never saw them. LMAO She didn't laugh. Again LMAO
