Being a jack of all trades is good for running a business well or being in a managering position because you understand the many roles you have to supervise whereas being a specialist is good for making a name for yourself in a certain position you specialized in and being an expert in it. They both have pros and cons and you have to see which one you prefer more : having (on average) more money/ more job security or being more respected/ making a change in society all by yourself. At least that's my opinion
Being able to specialize one thing meaning they are very capable to acquire general knowledge in other field as well as much as they wish to and to any depth they desired if deemed needed, much easiler than those so-called generalist versatile if could be deemed as a talent underestimate the difficulty to become specialized, thinking dumb rigid can still be able to go that far🤷

Almost 28 and still not sure im good at manyyy things but I'm not a master of any I'm just good enough not the best it's quite difficult to narrow down what I truly enjoy doing bc I can do pretty much anything but it becomes counter productive since I'm just slightly above average or average but never really a master and can't ever say "this is my forte" .. dilemma

You can use it to open up new horizons and either develop skillsets more quickly or explain things in a way no one does. It's hard to give you an example, but there are certain skillsets in life which require you to be a jack of all trades sort of guy to be successful in it: In sports, you have athletics. In martial arts, you have MMA. In the tech industry, you have cyber security (requires good programming, IT and often electrical engineering skills) These sort of skills put together what you've learned in all smaller, more specialized skills and being a jack of all trades in a group of skills can make your learning curve much more efficient in those skillsets where you need many sub-skills to succeed. I'm not sure if my explanation is that understandable, but maybe you'll see what I mean
regardless of being either, its about personality and attitude, just be humble. "If u know something your juniors don't, it doesn't make u a Genius. Be humble." - BatNars.
When I was younger I slowly shifted from the notion of Jack of all Trades and master none to master of one, but you just took it to a next level with representation! Really loved it, that and the fusion+it's over 9000 😂❤
@SiegfriedFafnirsbane Yes, this not for everyone, but I am leaving this option out there for the few that need it so that they don't have to struggle to choose.
I would say it's better to work towards being a generalists but not a generalists in the typical definition of it. I don't mean try and master everything but become intermediate at the skills you learn. The skills you learn while working towards it will help in other fields or in your personal life like me i got to a journeymens level skill in the trades industry. Theoretically i buy a house after a few years or working, then while moving in or living there for a month or so the deck outback collapses and the house starts needing all these repairs or starts falling apart. Ill never need to hire a contractor to come and do the repairs
So funny that the original phrase is “Jack of all trades but a master of one” not either but rather a balance. Expertise mixed with an understanding of many outside subjects
One of my personal mantras is to : be a jack of all trades, but a master of one. This is especially vital if you are something like a solo game developer. I work on pretty much everything in my game. I'm not the best artist, composer, level designer, programmer, etc. But i have a knack for telling stories with what I've got, so i leaned into that part the most while letting the other skills I've learned assist me. And it's been helpful. So, if you wanna be a jack of all trades, fine. Wanna be a master of one? Great. As for me, I will be both.🙂
Yessir that's what im doing right now. I can literally do every game development job, i.e GFX, VFX, Animating, Map Development, Story Building, etc. but I am a "master-of-one" at programming. This combo of expertise is quite literally the perfect for solo dev because programming happens to be the most difficult and expensive part of game development.
I’m a jack of all trades. What helped was missing the first day of tech school, and becoming a professional job hopper with a 3mo average. Now I own a one stop shop business thats 5 star rated.
job hopping is like getting a raise every 4-6 months, im already up to 25$ an hour and ive only been working for a little over 1 year but im so good at bullshitting people and ive been doing technical hobbies my whole life.
Yoo I needed this so badly. I just finished law school at the time of writing and was frustrated as I thought it did not reach you a wide enough skillset to be worth the time I put into it. This consoled me a little
The best solution is probably to find a field where it balances all your skill sets (not interests) into one big umbrella. This enhances your chances of specialising in multiple fields rather than finding connections across contrasting fields and then innovating according to that. It’s important to find a sweet spot.
Simple but very interesting video which come to my UA-cam home! I always know that I have many talents, but the conflict of specialist vs generalist always exist in my mind. Thank you for give me fresh perspective about this eternal conflict! ❤🎉
history greatest minds--da vinci, ben franklin, ada lovelace, michael faraday, and many more--were considered to be jack of all trades. It's not about being a generalist; but rather, a master of versatility, a future-ready leader who'd connect the worlds--because future belongs to the adaptable
Thank you for this video. It was quite a soothing balm to a problem I'm having at the moment. I'm reading a book about learning and skill acquisition, and I'm finding it very interesting, but it is also suggesting that in order to be a high achiever, you must prioritise what you learn, and you must learn for a purpose. I like to learn because I like to learn, I don't *necessarily* have a reason (though often I do). And I do know that there's one skill I am most passionate about developing which is writing/storytelling, but I am always looking for new knowledge to put into my stories and my essays and improve my understanding of the world - as well as the skills that will help me navigate it. Many people that I admire are polymaths to some degree or other. Many are masters of one particular thing. Both are great. I simply think I would grow bored, being a master of only one thing (though I do want to become a master of writing, to some degree; but I think there is endless room to learn and know more there).
I think groups/societies work best when the two types work together, but both have weaknesses. Do your best to be as skilled as possible, and watch out for risks, prepared to change..
Specialist is often better for work life balance, and generalist is often better for high ambition targets especially when combined with business skills.
You need to master in one field to get famous or rich. Jack of trades won't make you famous because there is always a person who can do better than you in every field. For example Messi is famous, rich and living his dream life because he mastered in football. But a guy who is just good in football, tennis, singing, dancing, swimming and running won't ever be as recognisable than the person who is world famous for a specific talent.
That’s exactly what I’m trying to. I’m by nature a jack of all trades and quick to learn stuff, thanks to my ADHD. A Jack of all trades, master of one is someone who settled for less and never anything more. It is no longer practical to devote your life to breakthroughs anymore. It is very hard to search for new knowledge when you have to worry about bills and the struggles of mental health (which runs rampant in society these days).
@@rapidcreations4980 I thought you were going to give the argument of “Because breakthroughs just aren’t as impactful as they were few hundred years ago, when each new discovery could turn the world upside down” But seriously? Bills? Mental health? You’re speaking like kids wouldn’t work as chimney sweeps to earn pennies back then. And mental health support is on an all time high right now. Why do you think you see so many mental health problems online? It’s because we’re normalizing support of it in recent years I get the argument of “No working man can just devote their lives to study” because not anyone can be like the great minds of back then, either because of limited resources, or because they don’t fit that role (which is why most working men are generalists). But compared to when people like Newton existed in this Information Age, with the access of the internet, it couldn’t be a more perfect time to devote your life to as least one thing. I recently heard the full quote. 'A Jack of All Trades is a Master of None, but often times better than a Master of One." But give it time, and any Jack/or Jill can excel in many things, and any Specialist can learn to generalize.
I very much needed this perspective. I'm studying Software Engineering but I know a ton of other things from mechanical principles to story and animation. But realizing that I can be both a generalist AND a specialist in some specific field (which I'm thinking of going into Computer Graphics as my specialty in Software Engineering) makes me feel so much better about this path. When I graduate I will basically have the skills and knowledge I need to become versatile in the field!
That’s what I thought for the last 35 years….I’m above average at many things but not a professional at one, I think the ending of this video is key for someone like myself, it’s time to master and focus on 1 thing and do it with mastery
It's very rare for a true jack of all trades to not be a master of at least one. And then there's the Renaissance man, the true master of several domains.
After much thought, perhaps a "T Skill Tree" is best, typically. Everything has a skill cap or at least a relative one. Once that it is reached (or before), it is best to specialize in something, but also learning a few other things.
I think I remember this quote from bruce lee which contradicts this type of statement “I fear not man who practiced 10,000 kicks once, I fear the man who practiced 1 kick 10,000 times.” The video although a bit depriving of this generalist topic, is still meant to give you an idea to take concepts of other ideas to forge your own masteries. So to all generalists out there, keep on cooking, building, crafting, typing, writing, weaving, managing, filming and painting away!
Be a cog. Masters and jack's will die, their ego wither, forgotten, grinded down by gears of soulles machine of society and marching progress. Individuals are temporary, the machine is eternal
Depends on your career requirement and/or your decision responsibility. If your decision affects lots of different stake holders, it's better you learnt something of everything; however to reach your decision, you need to ask opinions from those who knows everything of something.
This is why my role models are renaissance men. They excel in many different fields. I, myself, try dabbling in a lot of different things and I sometimes find that I may have a talent in a certain activity. Mastery is a different thing altogether but aiming to be proficient enough to thrive should be the goal.
I'm not so sure about the black bear when you have the brown bear. I assume you watched TierZoo's vid on bears and yea being a bit smaller lets black bear able to climb better than brown bears but not by much. Cuz yes, Brown Bears can also climb trees and have bigger bulk that helps against predators.
Both are required in modern society and perfect in their place , sure you need generalist to get creative ideas but you also need specialist to advance in a perticular field. Also i am pretty sure most of you will like to get a surgery or build your house from a specialist in that field than a generalist. But this do not mean that you should not persue more knowledge even as a specialist
I'm turning 22, ans my curriculum vitae might be bigger than every person who graduated highschool with me. My curriculum is very versatile. It goes from musical instruments I play, goes through theatre, creative writing, programming, all up to languages I speak. And yet I don't have any college degree. Don't let schooling interfere with your education.
Become a master in topic that applies to a lot of things like Mathe, computer science and so on. But do not become a master of industry tools but of the concepts and logics behind it
I really don't know why people think that by becoming a manager you multiply your ability. Management is a skill in itself. You can "stuck" doing "the same" thing and be simply irreplaceable by expertise
What better, knowing 100 word in language or 1 word in 100 languages. Being specialist is always better. But being specialist in two things even better. 100 words in Russian and 100 words in English > 100 words in English > 1 word of every language.

Yea we may not master "Assembly language" but if we learn python scripting or tech knowledge in general we unlock a whole new world to explore Same with learning basic survival skills, camping skills So you can explore some parts of the Earth You could not before we are not "masters like F1 car drivers" but we are good enough that Driving a car or riding a bike is useful to us
In my opinion, master one thing first before becoming a generalist. Im down the path of being a generalist first and is just now mastering one field. Ive forgotten a lot of things i dabbled with now that im focusing on one skill. If you master one field and dabbled on different discipline. You wont easily forget how to do the one you did for years. Its like riding a bike for you.

Along this path, I acquired knowledge in various areas, including Android, iOS, ReactJS, React Native, Django, and more. At times, I questioned whether I had made too many changes, but you helped me realize the importance of evolving with time.
Jack of all trades + Master of one
There's a long way to go 🥳
Dude you from india ? Could you share more about youre journey. The reason i asked wether youre born and bred in india or not because im from there too.i wanted to know what is gonna happen in tech and if the things im learning will take me anywhere, im a bsc cs student almost at my last year and let me tell you the system us utter grabage anyone with above average skills would be able to learn it all by themselves;my point being that being present during lecture provides absolutely nothing. I think youre well informed about our indian ed-system , its far behind the European one ; and the European students themselves complain how their system isnt adequate and could you major improvements.
Not going to lie im not a really good theory student who loves to cram notes(i was but not as of now) . I like learning stuff by jumping in and hitting a wall forming questions and then finding answers. But they do it the other way around.
The rant aside, could you elaborate on youre journey or if you got another chance then how would you do it . Also how s the future.

For example running a small business vs being a middle man in a big corporation
Being a generalist is mathematically better.
Being able to specialize one thing meaning they are very capable to acquire general knowledge in other field as well as much as they wish to and to any depth they desired if deemed needed, much easiler than those so-called generalist
versatile if could be deemed as a talent underestimate the difficulty to become specialized, thinking dumb rigid can still be able to go that far🤷
24 years old, as a jack-of-all-trades, I think it's pretty annoying now. Yes I have dipped my hand into many things. But I'm not great at anything. I can't use those little bits of skills that I've learned for anything professional or to give myself a steady income. What the hell am I supposed to do?
find the one you really want to master and be both at the same time
pick 1-3 things you like best and seek to get better at them. you have plenty of time.
Speaking as someone who was there
Almost 28 and still not sure im good at manyyy things but I'm not a master of any I'm just good enough not the best it's quite difficult to narrow down what I truly enjoy doing bc I can do pretty much anything but it becomes counter productive since I'm just slightly above average or average but never really a master and can't ever say "this is my forte" .. dilemma
@@hafshssi feel that tbh. And I’m 26 now still chasing all these skills I got and that doesn’t bother me that much, but i try to do it the smart way. Im an architect, so photography, videography, graphic design, 3d art, painting, drawing and general designing can be useful, still my job is doing 1 thing but me as a creative I like to do all of them and trying to be master of all trades. Also i changed my job lately and i’ll do it again with pleasure.
You can use it to open up new horizons and either develop skillsets more quickly or explain things in a way no one does. It's hard to give you an example, but there are certain skillsets in life which require you to be a jack of all trades sort of guy to be successful in it:
In sports, you have athletics.
In martial arts, you have MMA.
In the tech industry, you have cyber security (requires good programming, IT and often electrical engineering skills)
These sort of skills put together what you've learned in all smaller, more specialized skills and being a jack of all trades in a group of skills can make your learning curve much more efficient in those skillsets where you need many sub-skills to succeed.
I'm not sure if my explanation is that understandable, but maybe you'll see what I mean
regardless of being either, its about personality and attitude, just be humble.
"If u know something your juniors don't, it doesn't make u a Genius. Be humble." - BatNars.
Most people are not good "enough " in one skill
Yess. People are saying that being a master of one is worse when many people are actually not even master of one, just decent at one.
To be fair, it's not easy to find your passion. And if you already know what you like, dedicating your life to this is whole another matter
When I was younger I slowly shifted from the notion of Jack of all Trades and master none to master of one, but you just took it to a next level with representation! Really loved it, that and the fusion+it's over 9000 😂❤

Lol I have already read 3 comments of game dev including me. Ig only game devs are true jack of all trades

Being a specialist is great as long as your specialization is in demand. If it becomes obsolete then you have a problem.
People need to see this!
Life changing!!!
This is quite a refreshing take on how to present a topic. I’d watch videos on any topic all day if they’re presented like this. Lovely work❤
Simple but very interesting video which come to my UA-cam home!
Wow, this is seriously wonderfully made. Thank you for this video
What does it mean
Like a friend of mine said, "Be an expert in your field while still being in the field of other experts" 👍
"Jack of all trades and a master of one" when he sees "Master of all trades"
Specialist is often better for work life balance, and generalist is often better for high ambition targets especially when combined with business skills.
This video needs more views. It's really well made
Skills are dynamic not static, the analogy is like a knife more accurate method for making it sharper more great
jack of all trades, master of one, and that one thing is everything
You underestimate what mastery is.
This is what I call quality content. I loved the ideas, arguments, animation, and sound. Well Done.
What about DaVinci 😂 leave sportspersons they will however forgotten after someone who actually performs well 😂

A Jack of all trades, master of one is someone who settled for less and never anything more. People often forget that it’s people like Einstein and Newton (masters of at least one) that pushed sciences forward
A Jack of all trades is an everyday man’s job and lifestyle. A master of one is someone who will be important to society, with an affinity for better
Its interesting you stated Newton. Newton invented a whole new branch of mathematics to prove his laws of gravity. Which infact is 2 different fields.
@@HariKrishna-hp7tu “Masters of at least one” Newton was a master of many. My main point is you at least have to be a master of one to push science forward
It is no longer practical to devote your life to breakthroughs anymore. It is very hard to search for new knowledge when you have to worry about bills and the struggles of mental health (which runs rampant in society these days).
@@rapidcreations4980 I thought you were going to give the argument of “Because breakthroughs just aren’t as impactful as they were few hundred years ago, when each new discovery could turn the world upside down”
But seriously? Bills? Mental health? You’re speaking like kids wouldn’t work as chimney sweeps to earn pennies back then. And mental health support is on an all time high right now. Why do you think you see so many mental health problems online? It’s because we’re normalizing support of it in recent years
I get the argument of “No working man can just devote their lives to study” because not anyone can be like the great minds of back then, either because of limited resources, or because they don’t fit that role (which is why most working men are generalists). But compared to when people like Newton existed in this Information Age, with the access of the internet, it couldn’t be a more perfect time to devote your life to as least one thing. Be it an actual science or just some hobby you really like that, who knows, might be able to impact something
@@rapidcreations4980 scientific research nowadays is so complicated that you will not make it without good funding and a team. All simple things discovered ages ago, now we dealing with quantum physics. It's still possible though, but more unlikely
This is such a nice production love it❤
We need both, like a head needs a tail in order to have make a coin, and coin is valuable. Debate all you want about the value of the coin, the fact still remains, there is value.
Now you sir are quite brilliant
Specialization is literally what built our society and systems and technologies
I recently heard the full quote.
'A Jack of All Trades is a Master of None, but often times better than a Master of One."
But give it time, and any Jack/or Jill can excel in many things, and any Specialist can learn to generalize.
right
I very much needed this perspective.
Jack of all trades master of none is always better than mastering one
That’s what I thought for the last 35 years….I’m above average at many things but not a professional at one, I think the ending of this video is key for someone like myself, it’s time to master and focus on 1 thing and do it with mastery
Some times master of one is sometimes is better they will have a basic knowledge about other fields but they will be the top on their field
Specialist is great when the going is good.
But when the battlefield changes they're merely a one trick pony.
The fusion in the end really showed what inspires the animator and artist

The video although a bit depriving of this generalist topic, is still meant to give you an idea to take concepts of other ideas to forge your own masteries. So to all generalists out there, keep on cooking, building, crafting, typing, writing, weaving, managing, filming and painting away!

There's a reason why the black bear is the best bear when there's such species like the polar bear

It goes from musical instruments I play, goes through theatre, creative writing, programming, all up to languages I speak. And yet I don't have any college degree.
Don't let schooling interfere with your education.
Both are extrememly important to have in a society, but for most people, being a generalist will help you in life more.
I think being a master of one is not bad because you are so good at one thing that you can express it in a thousand ways
It is definitely better to have a Jack-of-all-trades than a master of none
Become a master in topic that applies to a lot of things like Mathe, computer science and so on. But do not become a master of industry tools but of the concepts and logics behind it
I really don't know why people think that by becoming a manager you multiply your ability. Management is a skill in itself. You can "stuck" doing "the same" thing and be simply irreplaceable by expertise
this channel, at least, tried to say that it multiplied the effect of applying your skill, not your skill by itself, from what I understood
Yea a simple management guy cant manage every sort of operation. Most management ppl dont get tht
