  • Often referred to as the “Galapagos of the North” because of the large number of endemic species that have developed here in geographic isolation, the Haida Gwaii archipelago off the northern coast of British Columbia is the star of Nat Hab’s newest expedition. In this webinar, Expedition Leader Eddy Savage will inspire you to visit this incredibly biodiverse region, home to the Haida people for more than 12,000 years. The oldest standing totem poles and best-preserved village sites exist in the abandoned Haida villages throughout Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site. The islands provide habitat for endemic species (such as the Haida Gwaii black bear) along with other wildlife such as horned and tufted puffins. The islands also boast exceptional growing conditions, resulting in tall trees that are thousands of years old, a lush understory, and a rich intertidal ecosystem. In recent times, Haida Gwaii was the site of an impressive show of protest to protect the islands from destructive and rapid logging of old-growth forest. A magical place that is hard to describe in a 1-hour presentation, let alone a few short sentences, this special destination really must be experienced in person. We hope you’ll be moved to join us!
