    GÉRY de GHERSEM {1573~1630 }
    MISSA AVE VIRGO SANCTISSIMA
    Quelle merveille, qui vous emporte sur un autre monde, qui vous fait rêver de cette époque. Ensemble vocales magnifiques grandiose bravo. Grand compositeur franco-flamant de la fin de la renaissance, il était actif en Espagne à la cour de Philippe II et de Philippe III, et dans son pays natal, les anciens Pays-Bas. C'était un compositeur prolifique et hautement considéré à l'époque, mais peu de son travail subsiste, sur les 280 manuscrits appartenant au compositeur, presque tout ayant été détruit dans le tremblement de terre de Lisbonne de 1755 et l'incendie qui l'accompagné. Aujourd'hui disparus il ne nous reste plus que sa MISSA AVE VIRGO SANCTISSIMA basée sur le motet homonyme de FRANCISCO GUERRERO {1528~1599}. Merci pour ce moment de musique de la renaissance et ce chef-d'œuvre de GÉRY de GHERSEM qui est éternel sublime.

    "Géry de Ghersem (also Géry Gersem) (1573 to 1575 - 25 May 1630) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the late Renaissance, active both in Spain at the court of Philip II and Philip III, and in his native from Low countries. The catalogue of the library of John IV of Portugal, which listed only about a third of the contents of that colossal collection, one of the largest libraries of the age, gives well over 200 works [composed by Ghersem], all of which were destroyed in the Lisbon earthquake and fire of 1755. Ghersem's sacred vocal music included masses, motets, settings of the Lamentations, Magnificats, psalms, and 170 villancicos. His solitary surviving complete work is a mass for seven voices, in the polyphonic style of the Renaissance. It makes use of canon, and is based on a motet by Francisco Guerrero." (Wiki)

    Géry de GHERSEM 1573 -- 1630 ... "between the ages of 7 and 12" according to the Habsburg chapel records, he was one of 14 boys brought to Spain to sing in the imperial chapel choir, the capilla flamenca. During this period, as during the previous two hundred years, the Low Countries provided a source of talented young musicians for the choirs of kings and aristocrats in other parts of Europe. This practice was shortly to come to an end, as the last known group of choirboys from Flanders went to Spain in 1594.
    ... Ghersem became cantor in 1593 and assistant director in 1598.
    In 1604, Ghersem left Spain ... In Brussels a music director of the chapel of Albert and Isabella, a position he kept for the rest of his career. He also became chaplain of the oratory, also in Brussels, and became a priest. During this time the court in Brussels was one of the leading artistic centers in Europe; this was the beginning of the "Golden Age" in the southern Netherlands. Some of his distinguished musical colleagues in Brussels in the early 17th century included Peter Phillips and John Bull.
    The catalogue of the library of John IV of Portugal, which listed only about a third of the contents of that colossal collection, one of the largest libraries of the age, gives well over 200 works by GHERSEM all of which were destroyed in the Lisbon earthquake and fire of 1755.
    His solitary surviving complete work is a mass for seven voices, in the polyphonic style of the Renaissance. It makes use of canon, and is based on a motet by Francisco Guerrero.

      Yes I've been intensely listening to Renaissance polyphony for a few years now and can recognise a dozen or so of 'the big names' Palestrina, Victoria, Josquin etc, BUT there is a seemingly bottomless pit of magical music, like this, from this period by very obscure names. There is also at ton of music that has NEVER been recorded, so we can look forward to many more gems being unearthed in the future. Some of it has been 'reconstructed' i.e. where they have one a single part the rest has been woven back in, amazing!

    ave maria priez pour nous ??? "Il n'y a qu'un seul DIEU, et un seul médiateur entre DIEU et les hommes, JÉSUS-CHRIST homme". 1 Timothée 2: 5. Les statues sont-elles juste pour représenter les saints auxquels nous croyons ??? "Vous ne vous ferez pas une image sculptée, ni aucune ressemblance avec ce qui est au-dessus dans les cieux, ou en dessous sur la terre, ou dans les eaux sous la terre. Vous ne vous prosternerez pas devant eux ou ne les servirez pas" Exode 20: 4, 5. Ils ne savent rien qui portent leurs images de sculpture, en bois et en procession, et prient un dieu qui ne peut pas sauver "Ésaïe 45: 20." JE SUIS LE SEIGNEUR: Ceci est mon nom, ma gloire pour un autre. Je ne donnerai pas, ni mon éloge aux images de la sculpture ". Ésaïe 42: 8." Leur terre est pleine d'idoles. Ils se prosternent devant le travail de leurs mains, à ce que leurs doigts ont fait "Ésaïe 2: 8." Et, en priant, n'utilisez pas de vaines répétitions, comme le font les Gentils, qui pensent que pendant longtemps ils seront entendus. " Matthieu 6: 9.
