  • "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" by Leo Tolstoy is a novella that explores the life and death of the titular character, Ivan Ilyich Golovin. The story begins with Ivan's colleagues reacting to news of his death with indifference and relief, setting the tone for the theme of societal conformity and superficiality. Ivan's life is marked by a pursuit of societal success and adherence to conventional norms, but he becomes increasingly disillusioned and unhappy as he realizes the emptiness of his existence. It is only in the face of his terminal illness that he begins to question the meaning of life and grapple with the existential questions that have been suppressed for so long. Ultimately, Ivan's death serves as a powerful commentary on the consequences of living a life devoid of authenticity and self-awareness.

Neural Surfer, you do wonderful work by sharing these stories and ideas. I listen every night, not knowing who I’ll be listening to or what piece of wisdom I’ll pick up… and am never disappointed. Thank you.

Thanks for sharing. Why does the reader keep changing the pronunciation of the name Ivan almost every other sentence?

It is important to both hasten funerals and maximize attendance.
Even if one doesn't see apparent causes of an early death, one should prepare one's affairs to pass on when that happens.
The shifting of conscious seems to limit it in other ways.
