I was 13 when this match was played and I remember the buzz of excitement and rushing home from school. West Ham were a really good team and it seemed to take forever to equalise. But Liverpool played superbly well - particularly in the first half - and the vision of McDermott and Dalglish for the equaliser was brilliant. You always had a chance with Kenny in your team. This was also a special night because Ian Rush appeared on the scene and it seemed that we had a very special player on our hands. Great memories!
Thanks for the upload. Still some years before time and goal titles were put on the pictures. Davis was a classy sports anchor and it was great to see Clough and Moore in their prime.
Some people of today, will not know that The League Cup Final was played on a Saturday up to the last time in 1983, you would only get highlights as it was not shown live on tv then. From 1984 it was live on itv or the bbc and played on a Sunday ... even thought The League Cup Final had Final Re-plays in priviouse years, this was the first time that The League Cup Final was shown live on t.v.
Oo Dickie Davies with a tease at the begining,if they have time theyll show highlights of Sugar Ray Leonard v Bruce Finch,oh i hope theres time.i rememeber watching this when it was live but cant remember the Leonard bit
The difference between 1st and 2nd Division football back in the 80's wasn't that big compared to today. West Ham were 2nd Division but still kept players like Parks, Brooking, Lampard, Bonds, Devonshire, etc...... all 1st Division stars and England internationals. As a Liverpool fan I remember the game and goals but I forgot how close WH came to a last-minute equaliser!
Worth remembering that Hammers were actually in Europe that season, along with Newport County (Welsh Cup holders). Had West Ham somehow done it, we could've done a European clean sweep with Liverpool and Ipswich taking the European Champions & UEFA Cup..... No wonder UEFA wanted an excuse to kick us out.....
West Ham United had a great season in 1980-81 as they won the 2nd Division Title with a thirteen point gap from Notts County, and quite a big gap as this was the last season of it being two points for a win. Also reached the Quarter Finals of the European Cup Winners Cup but were well beaten by a sublime Dymano Tblisi side which were cheered off Upton Park.
I was surprised Brian Moore would have been presenting with Kevin Keegan and Jimmy Greaves in the studio with Hugh Johns with Ian St John at Villa Park given the venue (was a ATV OB)
Darren Hayward When it came time for the big European and Domestic Cup Finals Brian Moore was ITV's first choice commentator from the time he started at London Weekend Television in 1968 to his retirement in 1998. Oddly enough he was only a presenter from London for the World Cups 1970-86 and had to commentate on one match in the 1986 World Cup when the satellite failed and went out to commentate on the final only. He only became a regular commentator for The World Cup from 1990, 1994 and 1998.
Was a shame Hammers had to come a cropper to the Red Machine. Thank Christ that jammy Spurs & then Man Utd got thumpings from them in the following two finals. Liverpool dominating the only domestic trophy they'd never won until this evening......... Only the World Club & Cup Winners Cup eluded them.......
In terms of The Cup Winners Cup the closest Liverpool got was as beaten finalists in 1966 losing to Dortmund and semi finalists in 1997 losing to PSG Liverpool did not get the opportunity again as the Cup Winners Cup was scrapped just 2 years later
02.03.55 - Newbon talking about criticism that LFC experienced that season (and that criticism was fair) is met with the scouse 'see yer in Paris.' Hahahaha
I got sent off for handling the ball over the bar like Terry McDermott the following season. I’m guessing the law must have changed as McDermott didn’t get sent off at Wembley.
Remember these two games well as a kid, a great battle. West Ham had some good players then.

The way the talk about the premier league now your think football only starred in 1993.Liverpool were a magnificent side for a long long time...
The highlights of the first match were on BBC but the reply was on ITV, quite rare occurance.
Thanks for the upload. Still some years before time and goal titles were put on the pictures. Davis was a classy sports anchor and it was great to see Clough and Moore in their prime.
I love the scaffolding structure they collect the trophy from. Pure 80s.
It would have topped it off if they had gone up a ladder to collect it.

Thanks for the upload, Thomas 6 years ago :) .. Was ill as fuck that day at the age of 12, but managed to come round for Hansen's goal.
Thanks for uploading. It was a fab night! Great to re-live it again.
Where have the years gone?

Good day Watched your next nice video and enjoyed. So next like from me. Baku city

Legend presenters and commentators
Loved Ray Stewart from the spot! 80/81 team was our best, in my opinion.
1:04 I like the way he also reminded boxing fans about Sugar Ray Leonard v Larry Bonds title fight.

and remember that Hammers were FA cup winners in 1980. In the 2nd division then too.

I remember Alan Devonshire when he played for Southall still see him occasionally out and about he's never changed still approachable a very nice guy
Thanks for a great video
The old dear in the mink coat in the dignitary box. From final whistle to collecting the trophy 5 mins max. Nowadays it's more like 15 minutes.
never knew ITV gave out Rugby League scores on a networked midweek sports programme
AWESOME upload mate A++++
Ian Rush didn't turn out to be too bad...
Not at all lol
never to be seen again...!
Attendance for the 1981 Football League Cup Final was a sellout crowd of 100,000 fans.
Dickie's got some neck saying Saint and Greavsie are 'elder statesmen'.
1:59:00 check out the vintage adverts, including Ronnie Barker & Corbett doing a cringey British Leyland advert!
1st time Liverpool won League Cup then followed by another 3 and now 9

Alan Kennedy scored some vital goals, but fucking hell, he was shit….

You probably got sent off not so much for the deliberate handball but not being in possession of a matching perm and 'tache combo.
