- Clay, Climate & Clogging: Build Your French Drain to Withstand Anything
When clay dries it shrinks and when it swells up with water it expands. It doesn't matter what climate you're in or what part of the world you're in. When clay dries you'll see cracks, you'll see the earth open up when it's shrinking so that's really having its way on any drainage system.
In this episode of Back to Basics I explain how to install your French Drain system to withstand any climate or clay soil.
I see a lot of PVC pipe fail in clay that's very elastic. Corrugated pipe withstands all these different elements of abuse, whether it's freeze and thaw or it's just the clay shrinking and expanding in the north.

Hello, really enjoy everything you have posted. Everyone should watch these before hiring or taking on a DIY. Where can I buy the non-woven double punched fabric and knife cut pipe? Thank you!

As a landscape contractor in Minnesota, I’ve always enjoyed your clear explanation of how to move unwanted water through the Northern landscapes. Well done !!!
All I can say is I’m sitting in the middle of hurricane Ian here in Florida and i can’t be happier and more prepared with the 209 foot Baughman tile French drain I installed myself over a year ago! Learned everything here on FDM UA-cam ..Two 4inch high octane French drains plus a solid gold tapped in all my four gutters plus one neighbors on one side- will post action as long as I make it out alive
No followup?
Can’t post the video here apparently- we are alive I can say that
Would like to see a follow up to this video; of how the drain preformed after a heavy rain see how it drain the water maybe a time lapse video.
Hi, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this knowledge with the world. I just bought a house and I have a unique drainage situation. My goal with any diy job is to find the best of the best and do the job right so that when I pass the property onto my kid, she doesn't need to fix things that should already work well. (Pun intended)
Long story short. I found your channel and I've found the right place. I'm about 10hrs deep now and lots more to learn! Take care.
Great stuff all the time thanks helping me improve my game and salute to your highly talented crew
I just watched a video on Apple drains on how you should never use fabric in those situations

So glad I followed your principles on this
Can you explain how we as DIY'ers can plan our projects in terms of using single 6" vs double or triple HO 4"? When would you advise increasing the size or number of corrugated pipes in the trench?
Thanks for the advice. Really helpful
Killers of the game! Let’s go!

It's not pressure that cleans the corrugated. You only get pressure with water depth. It's probably turbulence in the flow from the corrugations that gives you some cleaning action. 5" of water depth would yield only 0.18 psi. You need 100' vertical depth of water to get just 40 psi. Wont the clay clog the fabric? Scratch that, if it stops the clay, it definetly gets clogged by it. Those microscopic platelets of clay can clog anything. So, how do you cope with clogged fabric surrounding your pipe. Or are you banking on a lower percentage clay topsoil on top of the fabric to continually permit water ingress? Or does it allow enough clay through to somewhat flush itself while limiting the clay flow rate so the pipe doesn't get clogged?
The DOT is getting away with it because they use a huge bed of sand, stone chip, and gravel and almost no water ingress from under a road. That's not a good argument for a sogggy clay residential lot.

I like the other 2 fellas on YT that do french drains, they seem like good people. However, as a professional engineer, I like your designs. I'd hire you.
Your videos are Very helpful and awesome to watch! Thank you 👍💯
As always excellent content 😎👍
Greetings from the LooseNatural farm in Andalusia Spain
Hello Spain happy to have you in the house
ditch, fabric, pipe, stone, sew fabric, replace sod.
The product looks good. Though, $327 for shipping of 100' of pipe with a 5' wide roll of fabric(taking a $300 product to $627) is totally outlandish. Hoping to find something similar locally. Lol
Most jobs are 4 coils of pipe. One one coil is tough. The freight companies get their pound of flesh.
Great video watching the rest
So you don't do anything special for clay? Just lay the fabric down on it like usual?

Can you talk about slope a bit more? My flat yard isits against the toe of a slope that goes up into wooded open area. Tremendous surface water during heavy rain events comes down that slope. I'd need about 200 ft of trench at the toe of slope to protect yard and pool. If I pitched and discharged 3% at both ends from the middle - I'm still looking at 3 ft of elevation difference at the discharge ends - which adds tremendous cost due to volume of stone to fill deeper trench ends.
What would u recommend that more available other than products you sell

I just discovered your channel thanks so much for all the information this is been awesome!!! Do you have a video or you can direct me to a place to find out how to build the sump pump connection that is able to move up and down with the freezing and thawing ground? I just don't know what pieces I need to properly build it. I also want it with the "emergency" discharge pipe on the side, in case it freezes in winter. Thanks for the help.
Doesn’t the clay clog the fabric?? I’ve heard in a lot of places that the clay silt will screw up the fabric

That’s right son!
Your Kung Fu is amazing.

UK here looking for the best way to create multiple linked French drains 360 degrees around a house where the water table is in heavy clay under the subsoil. I can see the filter sock doesn't work directly around the pipe, but with the woven membrane encapsulating the drain and clean stone inside it burrito wrapped, does the membrane not block with heavy clay and then it can't soak through the membrane/stone/slotted pipe? Am I looking for woven or none woven? We have different terminology in the UK.
Without stone under the pipe do I need to dig the trench with a constant fall on it towards the outlet or is a level trench ok. It's hard to get a trench dug with a fall on 360 trenches

Just a question, tried to find an email. Could you dig the trench, line the trench with geo fabric, put in clean stone, burrito wrap it and finish off the top with sod or what ever and water would drain through the burrito wrapped stone?

@@FRENCHDRAINMAN So I understand that with out the pipe the water probably not run out as well, collects in the pipe to drain off. Just rock my hinder water movement but would run if trench is proper fall.
Interesting 👍
Thank you for commenting and sharing
I have tried this method with the fabric just to find the fabric plugged up (with clay) and prevented water going into the corrugated pipe. I’ll look for the fabric with holes punched in it or may do it myself.

I have read/heard that using cloth in a heavy clay soil isn't necessary (except maybe on the top but not wrapped) and can impeded the water flow, I believe I am seeing that first hand in the last few months since I moved and started doing French drains in a much less sandy soil. You have not had that experience in clay ?

So, if drain holes at the bottom are getting clogged, what is the point of having them? In the worst case they will be spreading around water over property along all their length (I am not considering draining a swamp here). Vertical narrow slots on the top sides of the pipe seems a better solution to me.

I have a question, if the blue papers so much better than your yellow pipe why are you only using yellow pipe on this job.
Because the yellow pipe is a 6 inch pipe. We only have the Blue pipe in 4 inch and soon 3 inch. This is a monster triple 6 inch System. Thank you for commenting I hope this helped.
Hi there, doing some DIY stuff at home. Where i live in the world we generally put a sock on the pipe too.. would doing that be doing a dis-service aswell as using the fabric? thanks!

Robert, if the royal blue 8 slot will move a lot of gpm, is it okay to add catch basins to a system? I know you don't like catch basins to french drains but wouldn't the pipe be effective enough to serve as both a yard drain and french drain?
ua-cam.com/video/AY_acVad61c/v-deo.html
So that PVC french drain failed because they didn't use fabric it sounds like. If you use fabric do you need 4" of gravel below the PVC still? I'm starting to buy your arguments for corrugated though. I just hate that stuff because I've had it clogged in every home I've owned.
That's what I was wondering too Kurt.

You don't have to worry about back ups from freezing?
If they're built correctly, they won't hold water, so when it gets cold, they can't freeze.
Where I just purchase a house in Orange Co. NY my back yard is soggy. Seemed I have clay soil. Any recommendations of contractors or how can I find an knowledgeable contractor to help drain my yard?

Wait a second. That pvc you pulled up wasn’t wrapped in fabric. How would your blue tube have performed. Prob the same.
Blue pipe has 8 inlet holes 360 degrees it would of kept working 💪
The system looks very flat; without good slope for good flow any pipe will clog or fill up with silt. 1/4” per foot is a “best practice” minimum slope.
We would have been 7 ft below the creek bottom. You Don't do this for a living do you?
In a perfect world brother, but the world is far from perfect.
How many pipes are you putting in the trench? Looks like 4 or 5. I thought only one was needed. How to do you tie all those pipes so the water drains through a pop-up emitter or which ever method you use? We have clay so I would like to know the detail because we would like to order everything from your company.
The pipes create void to move water the more void the better the drain. The 3 six inch pipe are not tied together.

@@FRENCHDRAINMAN I meant that since you have 3 pipes in the trench versus just one, how do you end the 3 pipes so the water drains? Does each one gets its own pop-up emitter or is there a way to connect all 3 pipes into a single pop-up emitter?
what’s the name of the company?
